We finally managed to make a decision on where to go so headed to Napier. We stopped briefly in Hastings to see some of the Spanish style buildings in town. However it hadn’t stopped raining since the night before so we weren’t really in the mood for walking around. Instead we headed straight for a campsite to hanker down for the day as the rain wasn’t about to ease up! The following day we headed to Art Deco Napier. It was a bit of a grey day and overcast but at least it had stopped raining. The main town is the only place that is in the Art Deco style along with the sound shell on the seafront, so its really concentrated in one area. We walked around the town to see the beautiful styled buildings ... read more

Geo: -39.4917, 176.916Napier has a special Art Deco Weekend in February which we attended. Richard had the onerous task of booking accommodation for us at a late date when nothing was left in Napier itself. However, he managed to find a room in Havelock North, only a fifteen minute drive from the town. The only concern was that the room accommodates ten so we were not sure if we had to share, which would probably have required us to purchase 8 sets of ear plugs for ohers to deaden our snores. Luckily the room was all ours, (complete with ten bunks if we wished) and as we left most bunks folded away, we had lots of space. The campsite itself was reminiscent of the holiday camps at home in the 50's, with crazy golf, an indoor ... read more

Sorry been a while since i've been on here. Been on a bit of a road trip. Having left Auckland, i made my way to Mount Maunganui. I stayed there longer than i should. The weather was so nice and the beaches there were amazing! Really nice little cafes, and great walks as well. After that i was in Gisborne. The town it's self was not that impressive, but it had some nice shops, and some great beaches. Again some really good walks. The town is the first place where Captain Cook landed. They seem to be very proud of this fact as there's loads of statues. I've just arrived in Napier now, so i'll probably stay a few days here. ... read more

Our departure from Wellington was not quite as early as we had hoped, as we have collected so much stuff in the 9 months that we lived there! We ended up piling everything into boxes and chucking them into the car, to later discover that we had about 40 knives and forks, 2 sieves, yet no saucepans or bowls! We finally hit the road at around 6 in the evening for our journey up to Hastings. We had arranged to stay with a couple who lived in a small cottage in the middle of the hills, who we had met through a website called couchsurfing. This is basically an online travellers network of people with spare rooms/couches open to travellers. We had heard that it was a really great way to meet the locals and get ... read more

In contrast to the busy tourist bus route of the centre of the North Island, New Zealand's East Cape promised to be a venture into the rural, remote, and beautiful culture, lifestyle, and scenery that makes New Zealand unique. The first night was spend in a tiny lodge, boasting the only wild stingray feeding in the world. Unfortunately they had been scared away by a recent storm and would not respond despite the guide standing knee deep in the sea throwing out fish oil for a good hour. The saving grace was, without doubt, an immense barbeque and mussels banquet - apparently costing around $2 per kilo, a fraction of the price and a multiple of the quality found in the UK. Anyway, the real reason I am in New Zealand is (amongst others) to witness ... read more

Tuesday 7th April 2009 Darkness in a DOC campsite in the bush isnt always a good thing. We lay in bed listening to stags roaring. Loudly. Getting up in the night to visit the compost long drops involved not looking at several pairs of eyes glowing in the dark at us. Not to mention the bush rustling... We were up and out reasonably early, back down the forest road to Kawerau and on to Whakatane. We stopped briefly to load up the last blog (free wireless in the i-site, bit slow though and wouldnt let us check the blog to make sure it was ok!) then headed out again. Most of you know that we arent good at sitting around, and this trip is short enough that we cant sit around for too long (except for ... read more

Friday 3rd April 2009 Despite a day at work, today was still the start of our holiday. We left the dogs and house in the (hopefully) capable hands of Lee, the house sitter, and headed off into the sunset. We got as far as Wellsford before stopping for dinner. Nothing special, we got a foot long sub each (Subway) and drove a bit down Highway 16 to the first lookout. We ate half the sandwich, leaving the other half for lunch the next day. The views are awesome from, and we werent the only ones having dinner there. Another camper van was parked up, and by the looks of it were planning to stay longer than us. We kept going south after dinner to meet Kirin, our couch surfing host for the night. He is one ... read more

We gave this name to the blog because its Maori translation, Whakatane, is the name of a place that we passed through on our 3-day trip to the east coast. The name arises from an 800-yr old tale in which a young woman did the man’s work of steering a huge Maori canoe to shore, thereby saving everyone from great peril at sea... (N) At the start of the month, I had a company conference on nearby Waiheke Island for a couple of days. It was a mix of work and play, including a treasure hunt by car one afternoon, which was as cheesy as it sounds. We were split into teams and had to carry out odd or just generally compromising tasks, such as building a raft, getting photographed on a nudist beach and persuading ... read more
