This is the wildest place I've ever been, except Iceland maybe. The road goes round the coast, in the middle are mountains full of nothing. There are a few scattered villages round the coast, and a few shops, but no phone reception and no internet, no petrol just beautiful beaches with pounding surf and piles of driftwood - huge trees washed down the rivers to the beach. We took the 22km long, mostly unsealed, road along right beside the sea to visit the most easterly lighthouse in the world. Because of wind during the night, the surf was spraying up across the road, and the mist was low on the hills. Such atmosphere, I'll remember that day. Here are a few pictures from the drive round the cape. We have spent today in Gisborne, a lovely ... read more

Weds 9th Jan: Changes buses again today as Chris and I are heading to the East Cape. we drove along through many coastal villages and beaches along the very scenic Highway 35 to Maraehako Bay retreat, the most amazing seafront accomodation. After checking in we went for a walk along the rocks and onto the beach to take a few photos. We were having a group meal so we all contributed and enjoyed dinner with a few drinks. We sat around a huge fire for the remainder of our evening. Our driver, Jason, got out his guitar and provided our entertainment for the evening. Most people crashed around 2300 but Lou and I stayed up chatting to some others who'd joined us by the fire. Made it to bed around 0100 and have an early start, ... read more

you'll have to use your brains now, as I've got these pics on the wrong day - swap heaven for hell, and you should be ok! sorry, pics won't load. But i have to tell you that we have found paradise here! This hostel is so near the sea you can spit at it. I counted 20 steps from the door of our room to the beach. And wgen I tried to take a picture I got my fet wet. Since we got here 2 days ago I've done nothing except lie in a hammock, swim and kayak. And expect to do the same for another 2 days. Sorry the photos won't load, but i'll put them on another time. You'd only be jealous!... read more

Hello everybody, I'm losing a bit the rhythm of writing my story in time. Last time a added pictures that should be in this entry. So it is a bit mixed up. Anyway, I'll try to cover the whole story uptill today! So last time, I ended the story at the 29th of december whem I was leaving for the east cape trip, with the main goal: the rythm and vines festival the 31st of december. So with a full bus, 11 people I think, we left. Jason the busdriver was a local Maori guy, so he knew all the little nice places, beaches and bays all over! The first day we arrived at in Pihi's place in Maraehako bay. A great backpackers right on the beach! We were there for ten minutes and immideatly jumped ... read more

We arrived to the Eastern side of the North island after enjoying a really lovely riverside drive which wound it's way in and out of farmlands and rural settings. When we got into Gisbourne we stayed at a beachside campsite which was full to the brim of last minute holidayers enjoying the last of the school summer holidays. After sorting out the usual re-stocking of food, petrol and also splashing out on getting some new brakes for Bart we enjoyed a seaside holiday pace for a couple of days. During one leisurely brunch we were entertained by 3 different street performers - all completely original in their own way: A fifties dressed opera singer, a 'zaney' comic who told some shockingly bad jokes and then scooted about in a portable toilet on wheels, and finally a ... read more

Hello Menen, Gent, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Antwerpen, Leuven, Kaapstad, Cordoba (argentinie of toch bijna ;), Malaga, Roma, Barcelona, Innsbruck (mils),....and all the other I forgot! I wish you all a very happy New year! So..what happened after Auckland? On the 26th of december i left Auckland with the Straybus, wich was a relief again (because I hate Auckland). From there we left to Hahei. On my bus, we were only five people: two german girls, Marian from holland, Steph from USA and me.. and off course our very entertaining busdriver 'baggins'. Hahei is situated in the Cormandal region and has a really beautiful coastline with rocks shaped by the wind. We did a Sea-kayaking tour together with some people from Austria, we saw a mini-pinguin and our guide made coffee for us on the beach. At dinner, ... read more

DATE VISITED: 30TH DECEMBER 07 It took a good few hours to get from Rotorua to our first stop at the East Cape which was on the East Coast around the corner. The hostel was right by the sea and our pitch was in their garden along with a few other tents. Some other travellers were here and we shared a few beers chatting and exchanging tips that night.. The host was really relaxed and made us feel real welcome. We loved the outdoor kitchen where making my vegetarian curry was a treat with a sea view and accompanying breeze! The outdoor shower was refreshing too! The journey to here was long but worth it for the coastal views and quite hilly and rugged hill terraine (the forested mountains in the distance were pretty too!). The ... read more

George and Beb invited us to have a day at the beach with them today, and they took us on the east coast about half way between here and Paihia. Whananaki is famous for having the longest footbridge in the southern hemisphere - I just googled longest footbridge in the world, but it won't give a straight answer. the longest suspended bridge, paper bridge, bridge between 2 buildings!!!! Anyway, the photos speak for themselves, and my face feels as if its been to the seaside!!... read more

Hello again. This is will be a quick post because I don't really have many new pictures and we haven't done much compared to the first couple weeks of our trip. I heard about the 5.6 magnitude earth quake and nickel sized hail in Santa Cruz and San Jose area. See what happens when I leave California for only 2 weeks! Natural disasters happen! But it sounds like the earth quake wasn't horrible so that is good to hear. Yesterday and today have been relatively uneventful. We have continued to clear the weeds from hell and I have posted a picture of our final work. It's a breath taking work of art! Besides clearing brush yesterday, we drove on down to Gisborne, which is about a one hour drive south of Tokomaru Bay. I picked ... read more
