Hello and hola everyone here and there, near and far. I hope you all had a safe and fun christmas and New Years and are looking forward to an awesome 2006! I cant belive it has been more than almost 3 and a half months since my last blog in Scotland or that this time last year I was flying out to LA in a week. 2005 went so quickly but was great to spend time with all of you all over the place. Since my 'surprise' return to New Zealand (which the joke was on me as everyone knew I was comming home) life has been pretty cool hanging out with mum and Emz (sister). Ive been working for Rich again making indoor and outdoor furniture for Zocalo and have enjoyed being in the workshop ... read more

Well life in NZ continues..... ...my New Year's Resolution is to do something new every week....so lets see how it goes in 2006! First up....AWOL Canyoning.... hiking to the top of a gorge and then abseiling and jumping off waterfalls in the Waitakere Ranges! It was time for a girlie outing and so off Chloe, Gemma, Rachel and I went! Great fun, spectacular scenery and definately a new experience! Although Question: would you rather wear a wet suit for the rest of your life OR lose a hand? Might sound a tad extreme if not a bizarre question but if you've hiked for a good hour or so up a steep gorge in the sweltering heat you night think twice! Anyhoo... Auckland Festival brought the Tall Ships, live music and street performers to town.... and I ... read more

I arrived in Auckland at about midnight on the 5th of January after 36 hours of travel which included a stop in Soeul and a eight hour layover in Singapore. But I real shouldn't complain, I flew on Singapore airline which makes Air canada look like a third rate company (wait a minute, it is!). Also during my layover in Singapore I met a nice girl who works for singapore airlines, so when I go back to Singapore I will have someone to show me around. I'm staying at a hostel called Central city Backpackers, which doesn't seem very lively. ... read more

Days 49 and 50 We ventured out and hand a wander around Auckland but not that much was open, so we bought a pot noodle for our gormet dinner (how's that for beginning the new year in style) and went to the cinema to see the Chronicles of Nania. It was cool. The next day we found out some very sad news - that Carly's Grandad had passed away. To try and cheer ourselves up we decided to book a trip to the Bay of Islands to escape dull Auckland so we booked that and had another wander, this time venturing into Parnell which is a really nice rich district of Auckland. Again, as it was a bank holiday there wasn't much going on.... read more

Happy New Year 2006! Thought you might find this somewhat humorous. Here is the travel blog's list of types of travelers. I'm put my self in the midlife crisis and wanderlust category. Gotta go.... Traveler Types 10 days and counting. Ughh, the stress of last minute preparations. Do I have everything? Plane ticket, bike, trailer, etc. I packed up the Cello case that holds my BOB trailer and bike. After that I don't want to take it out again. Quite the process. I'm sure that next time will be easier but I'm taking the instructions with me anyway (o: Backyard Adventure Girl... read more

Day 48 We arrived in Auckland where we were delighted to see our bags going round on the carosel. We caught the bus into town and got to our hostel where we were told our room wouldn't be ready for another 6 hours!! We tried to sleep in the hostel lounge and luckily after 3 hours, our room was ready. We went back to sleep until mid-afternoon, it took a further two hours to be able to keep our eyes open before we got ready to go out. We walked down to the harbour and had a yummy mexican meal followed by some drinks in a couple of bars. We saw new year in in a funky little bar and pretty much headed back to the sanctuary of our bed just after 12. Considering New Zealand ... read more

Yep, we're in Auckland and we bought a van. It's awesome here, New Zealand is kickass. But first let me recap our last week in Fiji. We left Lautoka and spent a night in Nadi on our way to Mana Island. Our friend Rio from Nananu-i-ra was there so that was cool. She told us that Dangerous Dave was staying down the road, so later that night we go to surprise him at his hostel and see what he's up to. We walked around to the back of the bar and find him in the front of a Fijian conga dance. Typical Dave style. The next day, Dave flew to Auckland and Bryan and I hopped on a 9am boat to Mana. The ride was amazing, it took about 45 minutes to get to the island ... read more

After spending Wednesday recovering from our jet lag and the hamhandedness of Jack Black in King Kong, we spent the next two days exploring the bustling metropolis of Auckland. A city of a little over one million people, or 1/4 of New Zealand's total population, it is pleasant, outdoorsy, multi-cultural, but not overwhelmingly interesting. Kind of like a Southern Hemisphere San Diego. On Thursday, we took a ferry across the bay to Devonport, a quaint village of shops and rich people. We walked to the top of a dormant volcano, which afforded a great view of Auckland and the surrounding areas, including its well-used waterways. After heading into town for fish and chips and a pint, we headed back into the city. Both that night and the next we grabbed dinner at Japanese restaurants. The Asian ... read more

Once again the best of intentions are crushed mercilessly by the sledgehammer of lazyness. Ah well, its the thought that counts after all and thought is being put in now. It's been almost four weeks since I arrived in North Island and three of those have been spent messing about in Wellington due to circumstances both in and out of my control (aforementioned slackness played a major part here) but they were three happy and well spent weeks and that's all that matters, right....? To clarify, I originally intended to spend some time in Wellington before moving off to explore the key spots of North Island (Taupo, Rotorua, Bay of Islands, Hawkes Bay, etc.), finally arriving in Auckland to fly onwards to Fiji, my next destination. However, things worked out much better in the end. On ... read more

I am finally able to access the server and upload some pictures of my most enjoyable stay at this organic farm. First of all, if you don't know what Woofing is, have a look at the website for the New Zealand organization. Wwoof New Zealand. I became a member of the Canadian organization before leaving, but had no time available to do a week or two before coming to NZ. So I just had my first experience Woofing last week, and it was Faaaantasic!!!! First, see what the host Heather wrote in the book that attracted me in the first place: TARODALE The work: establishing "mandalas" for fruit and vetables. Maintaining existing gardens. Raising miniature cattle and small flock of sheep. As per The Permaculture Home Garden, two mandalas are underway with the possibility of a ... read more
