The day before we left for Opotiki (that would be WEdnesday), Joe drove us to a nearby strip mall. I wanted to try the internet cafe (no luck; school kids filled every space and in the library too) and Erin wanted to poke around in their second-hand shops. We found a place that had some warm fleecy sweaters. They were definitely Erin style, with hoods and bits of fake fur round the cuffs. Well I ended up getting one too, as it's hard to find any warm sweaters this time of year here. We had Joe take our pic in our matching woolies. Joe and Barbara go to Opotiki to see his sister every three months or so since their other brother Terry died eight years ago. http://www.travelblog.org/gmaps/map_qI.html While staying with my cousin Steve, Erin realized ... read more

Wow! After all that planning... we're finally in NEw Zealand!!! (and what a trip it was) We left LAX on Tuesday the 22nd at around 10 pm. The plane was huge, and the movies were terrible, but the food wasn't bad :-) When we got to Aukland on Thursday, we were exhausted, but sooooooo stoked to be in NZ. Flying over the country was amazing. Everything is so green here! Customes wasn't bad... Benji didn't have a copy of his visa prior to getting here, but it turned out to be no problem at all. Our only hold up was the NZ customs agant having to take our tent into "the lab" but we were seed and pest free, and on our way to the hostel. We've been staying at this sweet little hostle called the ... read more

So Rebecca and I are finally off on our OE. An OE (stands for Overseas Experience) is a long standing tradition where young Kiwis head over to the UK to see the world. This basically involves working in whatever jobs are available and spending all the spare cash on side trips to Europe and alocohol. After several years of saving and planning - Rebecca and I hope to do our OE in a slightly grander style than usual - avoiding the complete dives and nights spent in the open in favour of quiet rooms in nice hostels. Dorm accommodation is always a great way to meet people while travelling, but hopeless if you actually need some sleep. So we will meet people in the common areas and in the bar, safe in the knowledge that when ... read more

Hi everyone It was a very long trip getting here, but fortunately we were able to sleep quite a bit on the planes. The route to Hong Kong was via Nome, Alaska where we sat on the tarmac for an hour refueling. Then on to Hong Kong, where we checked out with our hand luggage and hopped on a day tour of the city. Saw an ancient temple, a famous suspension bridge I had seen on Extreme Engineering one time, and we wandered along the Film Strip - Chinese homage to all the Hong Kong stars of films including special stones in the walkway with hand prints and signatures. It was along the natural harbour, and we took a ferry across to the third highest building in the world. Unfortunately, in spite of several efforts, this ... read more

So we have spent a couple of nights here now and are becoming more and more familiar with the country. We now understand all the bus a hostel info, which we would be dead without. Well I landed in New Zealand, to be greeted by Matthew at Auckland Airport.....eventually got back to Matt and Chloe's place (Matt promises me he knew where he was going and was just showing me the sights but I have my doubts). Anyway, Matt and Chloe were kind enough to make me feel at home and soon helped me to settle into the Kiwi way of life! First weekend....first camping trip! Cars packed and off we went to Rotorua for some fun! Set up camp and headed straight for Wai-O-Tapu "Thermal Wonderland" for some eggy smells and crazy, colourful, gurgling hot springs/ lagoons. For me the best bit was the free bubbling mud pools (I always was easily pleased!). After destroying my sense of smell we headed to the Luges (toboggan-like, go cart things with wheels ... read more
