Hi guys, this is the end of our little adventure, so we can no longer gloat and soak in hot spa baths! BUGGER! We ended the NZ odyssey in Auckland, pretty well a full circle. We went to Rangitoto Island, a marine volcanoe that sprung up 600 years ago just off the coast of Auckland. It's a weird place full of volcanic lava rock but also loads of flora which shouldn't be able to grow there!! Apparently lichen settled on the rock and then created a humus that other flora could grow on, gradually allowing for trees to grow there too. The NZ Pohutakawa "Xmas tree" was about to flower with bright red blooms just as we were leaving for the UK. From NZ we flew to Japan via Korea. Korea was snow laden which gave ... read more

Dear All, The flight from Hawaii to New Zealand is not a long one, merely a little confusing as you only need to put your watch back an hour, but you have lost an entire day. We flew from Honolulu at midnight on Sunday and, after a lay-over in Fiji, landed safely in Auckland on Tuesday afternoon. Everything went smoothly, except for the stop-over on Samoa (due to bad weather in Fiji, making landing a problem) and our bags not arriving in Auckland. However, all these troubles soon disappeared as we met Morag at the airport. It was the most amazing thing, here were two friends who had not seen each other for about 9years, but it was as if we only said goobye to one another yesterday. She had very kindly taken the afternoon off ... read more

I am staying a few days with my lovely aunt, Gael Hope, at her home on a "lifestyle block" in the suburb of Albany, Auckland. It's on the north shore of Auckland, out of the way from the maddening crowd. We would call a lifestyle block an acreage. We have been to my cousin David’s house, where Haley put on a marvelous meal with David tending a leg of lamb on the barbecue rotisserie - Gael timed our visit just right to be in time for chow! The next day we babysat for Haley for a few hours as the baby, Loucesca, 10 months old, wasn’t up to snuff. They live near a few streets of shops, including an outdoor hiking type place where I browsed among the hiking boots on sale but didn’t find any ... read more

And To New Zealand So we arrived in New Zealand last week as scheduled and took the shuttle to our accommodation with ease. The bike boxes have survived more or less intact to here and we have left them at our first stop ready for collection in March when we leave for Melbourne. We've taken the cycle ride round Auckland. We've had a super dinner in the revolving restaurant 30 storeys high on Sky Tower (thanks Anne and Graham for Michael's birthday present) and we have moved to see Fay Hobday of Servas. She lives on the beach in a three storey glass house of amazing comfort. While there we took a ferry to Waiheke Island which is really hilly. We met our match there with a near vertical slope following a good lunch and swim ... read more

13th November 2005 Didn't exist! Don't you love the International Dateline? Auckland and beyond 14-26/11/05 So, we made it to New Zealand by 6.30 am on the 14th, only one hour late but a number of passengers had to make internal connections and were panicking over the delay, we sat back and let them all flap about, then wandered off the plane and into passport control where everybody got to queue for about 45 minutes anyway. By the time we got through our bags were happily going round and round on the carousel so we grabbed them and made our way over to the "stupidly big and just plain weird" baggage area where we found three baby buggies, two removals boxes, one bag of golf clubs, a shoe and a bloke waiting for his guitar. After ... read more

After several days of overcast skies and a bite in the wind, today is sunny and warm. I hiked around the beachfront by Mission Bay from my Uncle's place in Kohimarana, and found my way into this privately run Aquarium. I always enjoy going to these places. This one is made from the old sewer system of Auckland, if you can believe it!!! The guy Kelly T. is a former diver who wanted to expose the ordinary man (and tourist) to the pleasures of marine life. He made this underwater plastic tunnel to walk through which is quite amazing. Of course I spent a few hours in there getting up close and personal with the crayfish - the size of huge lobsters but without the big claws, sting rays and the like. The sting rays are ... read more

The Mark Of A True Lady Is Knowing When To Get Off Stage I know, I know ... I said it was all over. But since our Auckland hotel has broadband access, I thought I'd post some pics from previous days that I didn't put on due to the slow dial up. These are mostly silly things. We're on a plane in less than 24 hours, so we'll see ya soon! Enjoy the photos.... read more
