I’M HERE!!!! So the flight wasn’t all that bad. We had full range over what movie, TV show, animation or documentary you could think of. Yes I did was 1.5 hrs of CSI. I was in heaven. I got extremely lucky by finding two people I recognized from Santa Cruz and just so happened we were sitting a row in front of each other. I switched seats with the girl in their row and the 3 of us did the flight together. And an added bonus one of the girls Kat is going to Christchurch via the train, so I now have a train buddy as well. Our flight attendant was so awesome, adorable kiwi accent and funny as all get out. Both Kat and I had our stuffed traveling companions with us and the flight ... read more

So then guys, Kia Ora, just what you've all been waiting for my Auckland update! Well, against all references I think the place is quite nice but a week is about as long as is needed and of course most places would seem nice after 28 hour in the air! The journey here (once i escaped Kev's flat on a ladder - long story) was okay as its actually lots of short trips with breaks for you to walk around airports, in pointless circles, from the Middle East to Brunei (which i can confirm for Jo and Vera is north east of Indonesia). Since the jet lag eased i've been to the Zoo which was actually a more like a park with animals where you spend the whole time wondering quite how difficult it would really ... read more

Friday morning myself, Laura and Yvette (two Spanish girls that live at the hostel on Waiheke) left Waiheke for the weekend and headed to Piha, a small surf town about an hour west of Auckland on the Tasman sea. We rented a car and took our shitty map and headed for Piha. First let me introduce and navigators; Laura who speaks zero English and Yvette who speaks very little English. Second they drive on the left onside of the road in New Zealand. In hindsight I should have looked at the map before leaving Auckland, but it was much more exciting letting two girls who can't read English lead the way. We drove about an hour north which didn't make a lot of sense since Piha is west of Auckland, at this point directions to turn ... read more

After four sea days with large swells and a broken oil pipe, Voyager finally reaches Auckland in the late afternoon (about six hours late). With the sun shining on city buildings in the distance and blue water sparkling around us, our sail into port is a memorable one. As usual, Captain Dag has picked an appropriate song to play over the loudspeaker, announcing our arrival. No wonder they call this the “City of Sails.” Auckalnders certainly love their boats…sailboats, motorboats, all kinds of boats. They are everywhere, sailing beside us, in front of us and around us. Some look like they have trouble getting out of our way and several times the Captain has to blow the ship’s horn. This is a three day holiday in the Auckland area and it seems that the entire city ... read more

We are now in Auckland. When I said Tim was feeling a bit better I was wrong! I think it was the quiet before the storm. It was definitely the quiet before the day from hell! It turns out that he has campylobacter! It is some type of bacterial infection that can be caused by eating contaminated food or water, or eating raw meat. As far as we are aware Tim did none of those things but apparently it is rife in this area and it is probably just related to poor food hygiene such as using something that was not washed up properly. We know all this as Tim went to the doctors. Under normal circumstances this would have not been particularly troublesome apart from the fact that the nearest doctors was at the hospital ... read more

If I was feeling home sick the last few days have cured me. It has rained so much the last few days it's ridiculous and the winds reached up to 120 km/h. This of course ruined my normal daily activity of sitting on the beach all day and getting a tan. Therefore instead of breaking routine, letting the weather get the best of us and sit inside and play board games, we headed for the beach! The storm had created some of the biggest waves our normally very still water beach had ever seen. Also became of all the warm rain water that had been spewing down the ocean was very warm. So we spent the two storming days at the beach jumping into waves. ... read more

I arrived yesterday in Auckland, New Zealand at about 12:30 in the afternoon. The flight was very long and tiring. When I arrived in New Zealand it was pretty much the middle of a hurricane. It was ridiculous, trees blowing sideways and rain coming down and drenching everything I own. On top of that I already was able to donate $200 to the NZ government. In the airport I was fined for a little jar of honey. Apparently there are rules based on what can and can’t be brought into the country. I figure most travelers already know this, but for the rest of us we have to learn the hard way. I had packed that with some strawberry jelly in my backpack and forgot it was there. Going through customs to get into the ... read more
