So this is probably a late point to start talking about my time in New Zealand as I have already been here for a while. I will probably have to write like two or three blogs a day just to catch up with what I have been doing! But for me this is an experience of a lifetime and I guess I just could not believe that I have not been recording it. My husband had a year sabbatical leave and when he told me at first the NZ was an option well I could not really believe it and that we would actually make it here! It took a week to get our visas through and the excitement bubbled over that of course I had to immediately announce it on facebook (yes one of my ... read more

Well, at long last, we have arrived in our new home-away-from-home for the next year! We're currently in Auckland, getting our permits and paperwork underway, before heading down to the south island tomorrow night. Our final day in Sydney was spent being aggravated at our accommodation and sulking over the ridiculous price tags on everything. We wanted so much to explore some of the city, but it was prohibitively expensive. Lovely city, we just unfortunately hit at the wrong time! Hopefully our dollar will strengthen over the next year and we can see some of the country on the way home. On the brighter side, most of you will be thrilled to hear that Jeremy FINALLY got a haircut (from an old Italian barber)...so he now looks like a 15-year old again. (What can I say? ... read more

Hi Everyone, Hope you're all well and enjoying the warm weather back home. Last time we wrote we left you in the middle of the Cook Strait heading to the North Island of New Zealand. On arriving in Wellington we were met by the warm waves and smiles of Jon and his wife Bridget. (Jon being Kev's dad's cousin, or Kev's 2nd Cousin we later determind.) So nice to be met on arrival in a new place and not work out how to get somewhere. We spent 4 nights with them enjoying great hospitality and being shown around the sights and sounds of Wellington and Island bay where they live. On the first night we had another first for us,,,,, a Piano Concerto, most enjoyable. Highlights also included meeting more of their family, walks through the ... read more

Auckland On 23rd December 2008 I flew into my new home - Auckland - to be greeted with no less than a torrential downpour! I wouldn't have minded but this was the second time this has happened to me and I am trying not to take it personally........ Nathalie picked me up from the airport and greetings etc out the way she promptly told me how annoyed she was that I had brought the rain with me. Apparently it hadn't rained 1 day since she and Lindsay arrived here one month ago. now I feel guilty - oops! My first glimpse of Parnell where we all live cheered me up. Another great little inner suburb with a load of cafes, bars and restaurants to pick from. Over the month I have been here we have made ... read more

You may expect this blog to be a reflective end of year wrap up, containing some of my inner most ponderings on my first Christmas away from home, well if you want those deep and meaningful sentimentalities your in the wrong place! This blog contains the best of New Zealand's geo-thermal wonders: underground caves! glaciers! geysers! and gambling! Lets rock..... After we last talked I was leaving Queenstown on a bus to Franz Josef, which wouldn't even be a town if it didn't have a massive glacier nearby! You can't just take a walk up a glacier so the guide company organises it all for you, all the gortex trimmings and spikes for your feet (officially called crampons), unfortunately the morning I was to hike the weather was to be 'heavy rain'. For some miraculous reason ... read more

...hits the ground running, buys some football boots, gets buried by jetlag, zaps to the south, a zoom to the north... Yep, it's the obligatory tripbackforamateswedding. Almost an essential part of any self-respecting OE, this involves a return to the land of one's fathers for a manic 2 to 3 weeks of frantically seeing everyone followed by a wedding. I, however, chose to avoid all this and go on a 15 day meditation session, which has saved me a lot of rushing. I am, of course, not being serious. The trip has been a bit of a whirlwind, and I haven't seen everyone I would have liked (apologies for any folk who I haven't had the decency to ketchup with). An itinerary would be no use - it sounds like too much effort, something I'm not ... read more

... read more

Frankly, I don’t like Auckland. Maybe we just hanged around the town center and Parnell, it’s just like another city, boring and soulless. After 1 and half months of working in hotel, we were leaving the city 1 week before Christmas. We hired a car from Omega Rentals, why we chose Omega is because it’s cheaper and one way hire, we don’t have to travel back to return the car. We were thinking to take campervan, but its summer time in NZ, which means everything about tourism, is raising their prices. You can hire a campervan in winter for $55 a day, but now it’s $150 per day, it’s 3 times more expensive my Godness. The car rental was $55 per day with car insurance. It’s a Toyota Corolla 1.5 CC. There was a Taiwanese guy, ... read more

Our sleepy and tired eyes would open wide with energy when we saw the word FREE. Well, this is the best way to save money. We were excited to find out that the City Library provides free internet access!! Just registered in the library counter and we got the accounts to access the internet maximum 1 hour once with previous booking. We could see more and more people Q-up for the booking after some times. It’s the same faces of people everyday in the library waiting for the free internet access. Secondly, the FREE bus, City Circuit. Although it doesn’t go far, just the loop in the city, it’s enough for us sometimes to save our energy to work or back. Sometimes to see the city, I can just sit in the bus for a few ... read more
