We landed in Auckland 13 hours later, at 4:30am local time. Because we had travelled over the international date line, we lost a day. In the airport , we grabbed a coffee and took a look at a map of Auckland so we could find our hostel. Before that, we had to go through immigration where they ask you questions about why you're in the country. When someone in uniform starts asking you questions, its hard not to look guilty, but we got through with little hassle. After that, we had to go through customs and biosecurity where they had sniffer dogs going around. We had to declare our hiking boots because we had visited forests in South America. They checked our boot soles and all was ok! After our coffee we got into a shuttle ... read more

Monday 27th February 7.075.4 Overcast Sky - 19c Had a good night’s sleep last night, probably due to the exertions of Sand boarding on the dunes yesterday. Not too many aches and pains though which is surprising. Anyway up in good time and had breakfast of toast and more toast. Supplies are getting very low now and we need to find a supermarket or may have to take to the hills in search of some wild Pig or Sheep with which to fill the larder. We left Whatawhiwhi behind and headed SE towards the Bay of Islands and another camp site. I wanted to keep the trip as short as possible today as i have just about had enough of driving. With in mind we only travelled for about an hour and a half before we ... read more

**Spoiler alert** this isn't an exciting blog, just an update I've been in Auckland just shy of a week now and I think I'm going to like it here! This week I have been attending the international student orientation events-some helpful and some just for fun. I've also been walking around and exploring the city. A friend and I found a faster way to walk to Uni which will be helpful for when I start my papers on Monday. Yesterday a local student took us on a, spur of the moment, tour. He knew a lot of information and kept talking the whole time so I think he would make a great tour guide! I've basically just been doing some odds and ends stuff. (Making sure my classes are all set, buying the necessities like food ... read more

I don't know where to start.... After leaving orientation on February 14th or so, we entered a village called Nananu for 12 days. Simply put, the drive into Nananu ( I was in the back of a seperate truck with two Fijian men) was the most beautiful scenery I've seen in my life. All around the community were flourishing foothillls, waterfalls, and neverending trails through some of the most untouched nature I've ever witnessed. I do not recall a day where I didn't go on a hike, be it solo or with others. I found a lot of enjoyment in hikes alone, not feeling like I have to talk to anyone and having personal thoughts to mull over while trekking through deep plains of wet grass or climbing up small waterfalls. Being on my own has ... read more

Amsterdam 5/1 Although it has been just three days, it seems ages ago since we were waved goodbye at Schiphol, Amsterdam. (Superlief dat jullie er allemaal waren! en bedankt nog voor de lieve brieven en cadeaus. Oma, ik heb de metalen nagelknipper er maar uitgelaten ivm scanapparaten, maar de rest van het tasje kwam goed van pas.) We managed to pass the drop given at Schiphol through the biosecurity check of New Zealand. Hong Kong 6/1 As the airport is located quite far from the city centre, we anticipated to be sitting at Hong Kong airport for 8 hours. That almost happened, if it weren’t for the Dutch man sitting next to us in the airplane. He was on his way of MOVING to Hong Kong and told us that it is fairly easy to get ... read more

Hi to you all and a very happy new year, had a fantastic night here in Auckland, not too much to drink but the atmosphere was brilliant, absolutely no drinking allowed on the streets so it's the first new year we did'nt have a drink in our hand to toast the new year. The fireworks were amazing! both from the tower & from somewhere off shore, we did'nt know which way too look, what a wonderful night, we walked back to our hotel and stopped for a McDonalds ice cream on the way, it's got to be a first for me to be eating ice cream at 2am in a morning!. The icing on the cake had to be New years day, we went on a trip looking for Dolphins & Whales, we were lucky enough ... read more

Not a great nights sleep but we were up & out at a reasonable hour on Friday to catch the ferry over to Rangitoto Island, the youngest of the volanoes around Auckland at around 600 years old. It’s an interesting place, black lava makes up bulk of the island & you can witness the colonisation of this inhospitable landscape by mosses and hardy trees. This creates little patches of vegetation which slowly grow into each other & wll continue to do so until the island is covered in forest. There are also little Baches dotted around the place & the remains of a military outpost used during the world wars. The summit offers views around the bay over to Auckland, north shore, & the other islands inclusing Waiheke. We also poked around in some of the ... read more
