Weather is the factor that will affect your trip the most in New Zealand. It’s extremely changeable. This could be so irritating sometimes. It’s Christmas Eve, although it’s summertime here, but we wanted a White Christmas!!! Coz I’d never experienced White Christmas before in my country, which is hot throughout the year. I would like to “celebrate” (though I’m not Christian) it “whitely” like I always saw from movies and dramas from western countries. Since one week ago we had made a booking to join the Ruapehu Crater Walk. Mt.Ruapehu is an active volcano, and interestingly it always snow-capped. According to the information, scientists predict that if the lake continues to fill at its current rate, another lahar will occur sometime in the not-too-distant future. The DOC has set up alarm systems at Crater Lake’s edge ... read more

Next stop, National Park. The scenery on the way there is breath taking, it’s like a huge poster hanging there but it’s not a poster. We checked in to YHA, then we went for a walk. The highlights of the day - Taranaki Walk, it’s an approximately 3 hours return journey. The weather is not so perfect, but we still can view the snow-capped Mt Ruapehu, Mt.Tongariro, and Mt. Ngauruhoe. Both Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe were used in LOTRs. While Mt. Ngauruhoe were shot as Mt.Fuji in the movie The Last Samurai. After about one and half hours walk, we reached the Taranaki Falls. We like to visit falls, to see the water rushing down, flushing everything powerfully, but yet we feel so calm. The falls was not the main highlights for us, when we left the ... read more

I-site suggested us to go Mt. Tauhara. According to the information, it’s 2hours return journey. The first part was quite nice, going up to the grassy hill without much energy. After we step over the DOC border, the real journey started. We walked into the jungle and all the way up. If there’s a “path” or “walkway”, it’s very narrow. We missed the main “path” a lot of times. But we don’t want to be lost in the jungle forever, so we kept walking and walking endlessly. The jungle is so silent, but somehow there’s some sounds like bird chirping and insects “singing”. Everything is so peaceful beside our hearts was so worried that we lost. But when we slowed and calmed down, we could feel the “soul” of the jungle. The jungle is a huge ... read more

We proceed to Taupo after 3 days in Rotorua, its 1 and half hours drive away. Taupo is the largest lake in NZ sized similar to the whole Singapore. It’s formed by one of the greatest volcanic explosions 26,500 years ago. According to Lonely Planet, the top five free activities that you can’t miss is 1) The Crater of the moon; 2) The Huka Falls; 3) The Rose Garden; 4) The Bee Hive; and 5) The National Trout Center. We visited accordingly. The Crater of the moon is no longer free admission, others are FOC. We stayed there for 2 days.... read more

45min drive from Rotorua, we traveled to Matamata for the famous Hobbiton Tour. This was a normal peace small town like others. Becoz of the Alexander family rent out their farm for Lord of the Rings filming; this place becomes famous, flooded by tourists to see where the Hobbit stays in the film. And I think the government should grant Alexanders the royal family who contributes tonnes of income from the tourists. We took the tour and there’s a van ferry us to the set from Matamata’s I-site. It’s 20min away from I-site to the set. On the way, the driver kept giving information about the filming, where the audition held, how excited the residents in Matamata were to involve in the filming. I was a media-worker in Malaysia, involved in TV programmes filming for about ... read more

From the guided tour in Rotorua Museum, Rotorua is a place developed by the European for SPA and enjoyment long time ago. They utilized the heat to generate all kind of body treatment. The Museum used to be a SPA place for European tourists called The Bath House. It’s the first major investment of New Zealand Government in tourism industry. Then it closed after some years due to damning statement by Health Department, then it became a night club, and now it’s a Museum. From here I know some precious history about Rotorua, the pink and white terraces, from the paintings and video. They are two large beautiful terraces of multilevel pools, formed by silica deposits from thermal waters. Rotorua had become famous for the thermal activity. Especially Europian came once a year for a healthy ... read more

Second day in Rotorua, we went to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, which is 45min drive from the town center. The entrance fee is $27.50. This 3km walk will bring you around to see more than 20 spots of the thermal thingy. The first and foremost, the staff asked us to see the geyser as it was the time it erupted when we arrived. It erupts everyday at 10am. Then we follow the walking path to spot different features of volcanic and thermal activity. It was a bit shower that day, can’t really feel the heat unless we stand very close to the smoke from the heaty hole. They are some tourists really dip their finger into the water!! Oh god, of course it’s hot, it almost at boiling level just that it doesn’t have smoke doesn’t mean ... read more

Samuel recommended us to have dinner in Hell Pizza in Rotorua. He worked in a place call Pukekohe before, and tried Hell Pizza there, so he can’t help falling in love with it. Hell Pizza is a national-franchised pizza restaurant in New Zealand, mainly in main cities. This is from its website “ Hell first began in early 1996 next to Victoria University, and since then has gained a huge following in Wellington. After a little creative advertising, the name Hell started to gain a reputation. Since then the fire has spread to cover much of New Zealand with 63 stores in Wellington, Taupo, Palmerston North, Hastings, Napier, Tauranga, Hamilton, Rotorua, Auckland, North Shore, Whangaparoa, Christchurch, Dunedin, New Plymouth, Whangarei, Nelson, and Queenstown. ” For us who come from Asian countries, pizza is not our regular ... read more

After the exhausted Tumu Tumu Toobing, we took 5 hours drive to Rotorua, the Sulphur City. It has the most energetic thermal activity in the country, with mud pools, hot springs and sulphur smells hovering around. When we approaching the city, we kept asking who farted in the car. The horrible smells came in from the window when we tried to let the “fart” get out the car. The city is filled with sulphur smells, as fart is formed by sulphur and hydrogen. Oh my God… We stayed in X-base hostel instead of YHA as it was fully-booked. I like this hostel coz there’s a cinema in the basement. Clean, tidy, and not so crowded. It was showering the day we arrived and the day after, in a way it cut down the yucky smells. ... read more

It’s famous for its Black Water Rafting and Glow-worm. There are a few companies doing the tours. As usual, we looked for the cheapest. As we have some vouchers from tourist leaflet, so we went for Tumu Tumu Toobing of Waitomo Adventures. It’s kind of Black Water Rafting as well ( according to the brouchers) but I have no idea what’s the meaning of Tumu Tumu Toobing. It’s a 4 hours wet trip underground which you can experience the wonderful creation under earth, and the glow worms. It’s damn cold down there, we were equipped with the wet suit which can keep us warm, boots and helmet with lights on it. We were like earthworms, crawling underground and we were wet. The best part is the glow worms. After 1 hour crawling, we looked up and ... read more
