... read more

Nov 3 Transvestites and Black Sand beaches So last night we had an overnight in some shitty cook island. Now maybe shitty isn’t a fair description as the island itself has some beautiful beaches and landscapes. What it shitty about it is the nightlife. It was brutal, I was mean mugging everyone hoping they wouldn’t just plain old mug me. Oh also everyone speaks French here which is kind of cool, although I wish I paid more attention in French class. It would have been the only useful thing l learned in high school. Then we move onto the bar scene. Basically all the bars here are gay/transvestite bars. I know it sounds crazy but there is a huge gay culture on these islands. In fact if you have three sons the third one is raised ... read more

Today I shared the water with Polynesian bottle nosed dolphins!! We were out in the zodiac scouting for a drift snorkeling site when I saw a fin in the water - then two then three. All of a sudden a dolphin jumped into the air three feet from the zodiac! We were driving through a channel in Rangiroa, the second largest atoll in the Marquesas. We were looking to see how quickly the water was rushing into the lagoon to see if it might be suitable for snorkeling. When we arrived, the water was moving so rapidly that there were 4-5 ft swells in the channel. So we were surfing the waves in the zodiac and the dolphins were doing the same! We would weave in and out and they followed on our bow, friskily speeding ... read more

We spent 3 great days on the island of Moorea, a half hour ferry ride away from Tahiti. We had such a good time, with so many highlights. We did three tours, one each day. The first was a shark/ray watching tour. We took a boat out into the lagoon and jumped into the water (with masks and snorkels) and watched the sharks and other lagoon fish being fed. A bit scary, but amazing to see the sharks up so close. The second stop had us swimming among manta rays; we were assured they were safe, nothing like the one that killed Steve Irwin. Finally we stopped at a little island for lunch and an afternoon swimming in the warm tropical water before being delivered back to our hotel's pier. On day 2 we went dolphin ... read more

We were hoping our taxi would arrive a little early, but weren't quite expecting it to arrive 5 hours early at 4am. We politely asked if he would mind coming back a little later. Maybe about 9am, the time we had asked for. Clearly unimpressed at us putting him out, he came back at 9.30. Everything else went smoothly, apart from the woman at the airport who refused to check us in because we didn't have any documentation. We suggested that the whole point of having e-tickets meant we didn't have to have any documentation and she finally relented. After that, though, everything went smoothly. We quite enjoyed flying on Air Tahiti Nui; the staff were very friendly, the meals were good and the plane was only 2/3 full. We were greeted at the airport by ... read more

Today is day three aboard the M.V. Clipper Odyssey and it is the first time I have had a moment to write. For those of you who may not know exactly where I am, I am in Polynesia, which is south of Hawaii and east of Australia. Polynesia is named as such because it means many islands. Whereas Micronesia means small and Melanesia means dark (which was derived from the darker looking natives - meaning more melanin in their skin. I learned that little tidbit from Shirley Cambell, one of the lecturers on board who specializes in anthropology. We had three lectures today because we had an entire day at sea - at least that was the original plan. Lucky for us, one of the dive masters Thomas (who leads diving with his wife Natalia - ... read more

Tahiti: island of dreams I was so sick as we approached French Polynesia that I finally broke down and went to the sketchy boat doctor. He was more than happy to prescribe me a Japanese cocktail of strange drugs. I took them all 4 x a day and didn't get out of bed for 3 days. Finally Tahiti appeared before my eyes. A gorgeous lush tropical island, surrounded by crystal clear water, large mountains and deep mist. Looking at the gorgeous water, I was determined to dive no matter what! We went to a small island called Moorea and bunked into a garden chalet with 20 other friends from the ship. I raced off to dive that day and it was absolutely beautiful. Nearly kissed by a sea turtle, I danced with it over the ... read more

We awoke early as we do and went for another bread and jam breakfast, we had the company of an old French guy and a Polish professor who was interesting to talk too. At 8.30 Walter drove us to the wharf so we could catch our ferry to Moorea, the tickets cost about $14 each, the ferry was large, modern and very similar to those in the Greek Isles. The crossing took only about 30 minutes but that was more than long enough to cause Ruth some queasiness, on debarkation we decided to catch the local bus to our pension which took about 20 minutes. The trip was pleasant the island is beautiful and the weather good for the first time on the trip, unfortunately the driver didnt stop at the pension and after banging on ... read more

We got up bright and early at 6am to get ready for our flight back to Rarotonga. Beni came and collected us at 6.45am and I was surprised to see that the streets were just as busy at this time of the morning as they were at peak rush hour in the evening. Beni told us that school starts at 7.30am in Tahiti so the roads are busy from 6am. We weren’t too sad to say goodbye to Papeete, although next time we visit (and we will be back one day) it would be nice to stay on the mainland for an extra night so that we could do an island tour as it felt a shame that we only got to see the least beautiful part of it. We checked in our luggage, and then ... read more

I made a mental note of how beautiful the mountain looked in the bright morning sunshine as we walked down for breakfast. Vlad came over and explained to us that he wouldn’t be able to take us directly to the airport motu in his speedboat as it was still too choppy over that part of the island. He’d tried to find someone else with a bigger boat but couldn’t so instead he explained that we’d have to go back directly across to the mainland, then travel around the island by taxi to get to the airport shuttle boat. We spent the morning taking as many pictures and videos of the place to help us remember how beautiful it is. Vlad gave us a large shell to use as a soap dish as a leaving gift. It ... read more
