I was up early which is pretty much always the case when its time to move on, Veia drove us to the airport at 8.30am where we were able to grab a toasted sandwich for breakfast. Later Ruth went to throw her wrapper in the bin, a moment later she came back raving about big spiders in the bin, I went over to look and it turned out to be a land crab, after seeing that one we began to see others scuttling around the place. We arrived back in Rarotonga about 10am, while I went and got a car from the hire place across the road Ruth collected our luggage. I went back to the prison on my way back to Muri but there were still no Ukekeles there that appealed to me and Ruth ... read more

We spent most of the morning using Skype to call our families, then spent some time lying on our sun loungers on the beach. I kept trying to take in the view and make the most of it as we haven’t got long left here. Around lunchtime we headed to the pool to cool off and had some lunch. To walk off some of the food we headed down the jetty to watch the fish, and found a ladder at the bottom. We climbed down expecting it to be deeper water, but it only came up to just above ankle level. The dark blue channel dug out of the mud for the boats was visible so Matt jumped into it, but again it wasn’t as deep as expected and only came up to his waist. We ... read more

We went down for breakfast again but Matt still couldn’t face any food so just had a coffee I munched my way through a big basket of bread and a plate of tropical fruit. After breakfast we spent a couple of hours in the bar using the internet to do some research on camper vans for New Zealand, then packed ourselves a bag so that we could take the kayaks out. Today we got a bit further as the water was a bit calmer. There were lots of rays in the lagoon but they move really quickly so we couldn't get too close to them no matter how hard we tried to keep up. We debated whether we had the strength to cut across the water to make it to the end of the motu but ... read more

Today I actually managed to drag Matt down for breakfast as I thought we should see what it was like. He decided to just have a coffee as he couldn’t face any food. Breakfast consisted of a basket of bread, jams, cheese, ham, yoghurts, fruit juice and a plate of fresh tropical fruit. It was really tasty but should have been as it cost over £13! After eating for what felt like at least an hour, I suggested that we take the kayaks out to work off some of the food. This time we decided to use the single canoes rather than the double as yesterday it had been hard work. We turned left from the beach. The water was lovely and calm. It was much easier using the single canoes and we felt that we ... read more

We started the day with yet another serving of baguette and nutella (it’s starting to get boring now!). Then it was down to the beach to enjoy the view and enjoy the novelty of doing crossword together (they were in the OK magazines I’d grabbed from the rack). They were US mags which made them really difficult as the clues were mostly about US reality tv stars we’d never heard of but that didn’t stop us from giving it a go. Once we’d got too hot we walked into the lagoon but even after wading out quite far it was only up to our knees so we gave up and jumped in the swimming pool instead. Vlad saw us swimming and came over and brought us a coconut with two straws. By late morning the weather ... read more

We ate one of our baguettes for breakfast (saving us £26 as that‘s how much the breakfast of bread, jam, cheese and coffee costs here for two!) and I headed down to the beach to read some of the magazines I'd grabbed from the rack at the bar. It was strange reading about what was going on in the real world as we’ve felt removed from it for the past few weeks. Around 9.30am we Skpyed Matt’s parents and had a good long chat with them. It’s great having a web cam and being able to see each other while you speak. The rest of the morning was spent on the beach. After a few hours there we went to sit on the jetty to look out across the lagoon watching the colours change as clouds ... read more

We woke up before 7am and looked out hoping to see the cat. He wasn’t there, so we walked to the shop and bought some more tasty pain au chocolates for breakfast and some other bits of food and drink to take over to Eden Beach as we were expecting it to be expensive over there. I was sure we’d see the cat when we ate breakfast outside our bungalow, as he usually appears when he senses food is around, but today he didn’t come. We packed up all of our things and went to check out, sad that we hadn’t been able to put our plan into action (we were going to wrap him in a towel to stop him from scratching and Matt was going to try to prise his mouth open so that ... read more

I can’t believe that it’s September already! Today we got up early (for us) at 7am because we wanted to go to the shop for some croissants and baguettes before we went to the spa - plus if you get there any later than 8am they’ve mostly sold out of everything. We went outside our bungalow and heard a meow and the little ginger cat who we’d stroked a few times appeared, looking really pleased to see us. We stroked him for a bit before Matt realised that he had something in his mouth. It was a big fish hook and one end was sticking right out past his whiskers, meaning the other end was somewhere stuck in the roof of his mouth. Matt tried to hold him so that we could get a better look ... read more

Having had an expensive trip yesterday we decided to have a quiet beach day today. Matt is gutted that it’s too hot to climb the mountain here but after melting on an hour walking to the shops and back at 9am it made me realise there was no way I want to try walking far in this heat, let alone up a mountain! We popped into the shop hoping they’d have baguettes or croissants but they didn’t. I’m not sure if we were just too late at 9am (as they get delivered at 6.30am) or whether they don’t get any on Sundays. So we went back for cornflakes instead. I spent the rest of the morning pondering which spa to go to for a massage tomorrow. I know that spas aren’t usually something in a backpackers ... read more

Our lagoon tour started at 9.30am and the small motorised outrigger canoe picked us up from the little beach by our bungalow. We picked up about eight more people from the hotel a bit further along the beach before heading out to the Coral Garden. On the way there the lady running the tour (we‘ll call her Helena because we can‘t quite remember her actual name) and the guy sailing the boat sang to us in Tahitian as she played her guitar. The ‘Coral Garden’ seems to be the focus of most of the trips and our outrigger joined another couple of bigger boats there. We were far out in the deeper part of the lagoon and it was choppy. Only half of our group decided to jump in to snorkel with the fish. Helena dropped ... read more
