Arrived at our hotel, Kia Ora and went snorkeling out front our hotel. It was kinda cloudy water but we saw a huge “Giant Morey Eel” and a bat ray, along with plenty of fish. Amy almost got bite by the eel having stood right next to it then putting her face in the water and it was within a few feet of the eel. Later we went on an outrigger canoe, which wasn’t very exciting, then swam in the pool and went to dinner with a Polynesian dance show at the hotel. I woke up and ran to Avarotu which was about 5 miles away one trip, very hard run cause it was like 95 degrees out. I ran to get dinner (pasta, which we were gonna cook in the coffee maker again.) We stayed at Bora Bora Pearl Resort. Arriving in Bora Bora was amazing. We stayed on an overwater bungalow which was awesome! The Pearl is great for snorkeling off your balcony because is has a reef nursery with tons of fish and it has a reef under every bungalow's glass coffee table. At night if you just hang out on your balcony with the lights on the water you can see stingrays and sharks swim by your room! It was incredible. We started the next day early with a 4 hour Land Rover “Safari” around the island. It was beautiful. The roads were narrow, dirt, rock, and really steep. They took us to a view point (really a communications antenna station), to a pearl farm, old WW2 cannons left there by the U.S. and to an ... read more

We went to Moorea, Bora Bora, and Rangiroa for our honeymoon. I would recommend French Polynesia to pretty much just couples or scuba divers. There is little to no night life, the islands are very relaxed, but the snorkeling and diving was amazing. We arrived at our hotel, Moorea Pearl Resort. Walked down the road and went to a few shops and got food at the grocery store. Made noodles with tomato sauce in the coffee maker for dinner, awesome! Be ready to either do this or spend a ridiculous amount of money on food. Over $100 US dollars for the hotel buffet dinner. There are many options to see the island. We opted to rent a little 4x4 Suzuki “Jimmy” (Sidekick) and went exploring. There was a short cruise along the shoreline road and we ... read more

In November I'm flying from LAX to Auckland and will have a 2-hour layover in Papeete. What is there to do in the airport? May I leave the airport, or am I supposed to stay inside? Is there a cafe, public telephones, newspapers, magazines, etc.? Is two hours long enough to go outside the airport if I want to? As far as I know, I won't have to check back in since I'll already have my boarding pass. I hear that there is market set up across the street from the terminal that sells Tahitian handicrafts, etc. Is that true? I'll be there between 6am and 8am. If anyone can let me know that would be great. I guess in the worst case scenario I'll just have to sit in the international transfer lounge and read ... read more

Hello to everyone and sorry that our 2nd blog took so long to produce! We just got a secure wireless internet account here in New Zealand so that is what the delay has been! Anyway, we were quite sad to leave Moorea as we really fell in love with the island. It's a spectacularly stunning island, with gorgeous sunsets (new pics included) towering mountain peaks, and sparkling clear blue waters! We were able to snorkel right below our bungalow and the amount and variety of fish we saw was amazing. We also did a really fun ATV ride into the mountains, through various citrus orchards..pineapple, papaya, grapefruit, lemon, etc, and on our last weekend there, took in a really interesting native Tiki Village bbq and show, including a traditional fire dance. On to Bora Bora, which ... read more

Oceania » French Polynesia » Moorea August 8th 2009

Bonjour to all... So, life here in the islands of French Polynesia isn't too bad! It's 7 pm Friday evening, and Candice and I are hanging at the bar, reading/internet at our resort here in Moorea. We had an absolutely gorgeous day...we had a boat take us to a small motu (island) and drop us off for a few hours of the best snorkeling I've ever been a part of. Absolutely no one else was around. We could stand or just float in the water, and we observed thousands of the most beautifully striped/colored fish! Overall, our experience here over the last three days has been great! We rented a tiny subcompact car, and have found that you can zoom around the one road encircling the island in all of two hours, and that's going slowly. ... read more

Varsin rentouttava kokemus.... read more

The thing about French Polynesia is that you have to plan and book well ahead and do your research thoroughly...apparently...so it's a bit of a shame that we didn't read this until we were in Tahiti. The islands were a stopover on the flight to south America and we hadn't really thought about what we'd do while we were there. We knew Tahiti would be expensive and had tried to budget accordingly but when basics like food and accommodation are heinously expensive there isn't always a lot you can do. There was no low cost accommodation or camping on Tahiti so we spoilt ourselves on the first two nights at the really good value (but still pricey) Radisson Hotel. We had planned to just take a boat to nearby island Mo'orea and camp trying to keep ... read more

Oceania » French Polynesia » Huahine March 20th 2009

Huahine Our next stop was Tahiti, and from there we caught a tiny plane to the beautiful island of Huahine. We were really lucky to find a slice of paradise called Motu Mahare (an even smaller island separated from Huahine by a few hundred metres of water in a truly amazing setting) which was made even better as we were the only guests. Our hosts, Kim and Walter were fantastic, lending us their kayaks, bicycles and snorkelling gear so that we could explore. It was lush, especially the crystal clear lagoons and colourful coral reefs. We spent a day cycling around Huahine, taking in the sights. Stopping at a river to feed some huge eels - buying the food was a little difficult as I attempted to use my very poor French! (Not sure the GCSE ... read more
