Bora Bora was the last of the French Polynesian Islands that Chris and Roisin visited. It is renowned for being one of the most beautiful places on earth and is said to be the nearest thing to a perfect paradise. Bora Bora is only 15 square miles and has about 7,300 inhabitants mainly living in one of the 3 villages Vaitape, Anau and Faanui. As Chris and Roisin watched from their private vantage point directly below the bridge at 6am watching the sunrise over this island, nature painted a masterpiece of deep green volcanic peaks edged by a ribbon of reef and finished of by white sandy beaches. Despite only being early morning, the colours in the surrounding lagoon were already showing off its jewel-like hue from amethyst to light turquoise. English is more widely spoken ... read more

f I said Pape'ete (pronounced Pap-ay-et-ay), most people would say 'where??' If I said Tahiti, the penny drops immediately and many folk think of David Essex in Mutiny on the Bounty and grass skirts. Ok, the women will think of David Essex whilst the men will consider thinking about the grass skirts!! Tahiti is actually made up from 2 islands Tahiti nui (Big Tahiti) and Tahiti iti (Little Tahiti) and were joined together a couple of million years ago by some geological shenanigans!. Tahiti makes up more than 1 quarter of the surface area of French Polynesia and two-thirds of the population. OK, enough of the geography lesson. Today it was another hot one hitting 90ºF at the hottest part of the day. Chris, (not from Chris and Roisin but another guest at the dinner table), ... read more

Oceania » French Polynesia » Moorea October 3rd 2010

10751 miles after leaving Widnes, Chris and Roisin have arrived in the Society Islands that makes up part of French Polynesia. Moorea is the first port of call. This small island is only 51 square miles and shaped like an isosceles triangle. There are two cut outs in one of its sides that form Cook's Bay – no, not named in honour of 'Masterchef' but the other ‘ay! Ay! Cap'n' one. The other bay is Opunohu bay. The main fact about this bay is that it doesn't lend itself to any jokes and the only pun I can think of is actually in the name: Opunohu!!! The population of Moorea is just under 14,500 and I've no idea what they do all day!! There doesn't appear to be many business opportunities on the island. The island's ... read more

Tahiti and her Islands Almost everyone I meet has Tahiti and her islands on their bucket list and it is no wonder once you take in the incredible scenary unmatched virtually anywhere in the World. Our visit - July 1999 - Honeymoon Trip First Stop: Moorea Accomodation: Overwater bungalow First Impression: arrived at night very tired and pretty much out of it Second Impression: Woke up and was transformed straight into the set of South Pacific only more beautiful than one thinks they deserve to be experiencing. Our first stop was this terrific island right across from and visible from Tahiti. Be forewarned, Tahiti received the same number of visitors in a year Hawaii welcomes in a day at the time of our visit. Needless to say I had conjured up in my mind this trip ... read more

In Rangiora Lagoon!! Hi guys, it is 7.15am local time on Tuesday and Debsy is tucked up in bed with a nice hot cup of tea and her new book so she is a very happy camper. The kids are asleep and shortly, Debs and I will take the dinghy over to the wharf and walk up to the little shop to pick up our fresh baguettes, yummoh. We had to order them yesterday so make sure we had some this morning so that is always a bit of a treat to get beautiful fresh baguettes cooked in the oh so traditional French style. We had a good run into the lagoon through the pass with no adverse outflow and no standing waves and I guess we were anchored up by about 10.30am. Our first drop ... read more

Hi guys, just finished our first 24 hours out of Nuka Hiva. We left the anchorage about 8.00am yesterday morning after a nice early trip to the bakery and markets to get some beautiful fresh bread and some fruit. Another aussie boat called Moreah headed off about half an our before us with a similar course in mind. We started with our main into a second reef due to the damage in the rigging and a full headsail and we basically broad to beam reached for most of the morning and not long after lunch we ... read more

June 12 Nuka Hiva, French Polynesia We made it safe and sound!!!! Hello everyone, we have now been in Nuka Hiva for over 24 hours, arriving yesterday, putting down the anchor and sighing a big sense of relief, a full nights sleep and no more hand steering for a few days :) We had a good day yesterday, mix of motor sailing and broad reaching passing through the islands and taking in all the majestic scenery, as well as catching a few fish on the way. They were more of the same we caught the other day and as we still had fish in the fridge, we unhooked them and let them go. We more or less threw the watch system out the window after about 8.00am and people just took turns on the helm when ... read more

June 11 2010 Crossing the Pacific Ocean Hi everyone, as you can imagine, it has been a bit hard for us to post our 'normal' blog as we crossed the Pacific from Panama to the Marquesas in French Polynesia. We sailed 3100 miles from San Christobel in the Galapagos Islands to Nuka Hiva in French Polynesia. As we sailed along, we posted our positions via our satellite phone and a diary entry for what had been/ what was happening for that time. Unfortunately we were not able to post any photos but at least people could see our positions and see that we were ok. I didnt have a chance to post the link to this site on this blog site before we left so I apologise for all those that didnt have a clue where ... read more

To be honest when we originally planned our Round the World trip Tahiti wasn't on the list of places to visit. However, it is the only way to access Easter Island from the West and it just so happens that Nicola has an old friend living there, so we found ourselves in Tahiti for a 36 hour stopover. The last time Nicola saw Clare she was 18 and off to Uni in Birmingham. She now has a degree, speaks fluent French, is married to Francois, has two beautiful daughters and lives in Tahiti ... But she still looked exactly the same as she did 20 years ago and we had no trouble spotting her when she came to collect us from the airport. After settling in to our room in their stunning house (perched on the ... read more

Geo: -17.52, -149.56Jim and I had a fabulous time on Raimiti. It is definitely not a place everyone would like, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. It is unspoilt paradise. Eric and his staff were great and the food was amazing. We snorkelled a ton and now are so spoilt by everything we saw. It was very thrilling to be swimming along side sharks, octopus, etc. We really had an amazzing time. We spend our last night in French Polynesia in Tahiti. We have really enjoyed our time in French Polynesia and hope to come back someday. ... read more
