Background: The French annexed various Polynesian island groups during the 19th century. In September 1995, France stirred up widespread protests by resuming nuclear testing on the Mururoa atoll after a three-year moratorium. The tests were suspended in January 1996.

Ok, I am now in Franch Polynesia, this is again 1000km east of Raratonga in a cluster of islands which includes Bora Bora! I flew into Tahiti from Raratonga landing at 2 am so no chance to do much on my first night. Booked into a hostel at the airport. I literally have never sweated soo much in my life during the night, even during mamoth sessions, solo and as couple!! It was a stink pit with cockroaches and orrible stuff but I hadn't slept in ages so made the most of it! Woke up nice and early the next day, [View Full Entry]

A regeneration holiday With 39 degrees on the thermometer and two bottles of penicillin in our bag we left the red continent - tonsilitis as a farewell present: thank you very much. For the first time on our 19-months long trip we hopped onto a plane for a longer flight. It offered good service, decent airplane-food and as compensation for the uninevitable (but small) jetlag an extra day for rehabilitation. Three movies later and one evening earlier we arrived in Papeete, capital of French Polynesia and definitely one of the more exclusive places on earth. We spent 15 US dollars for [View Full Entry]

We have spend 6 days and nights in pacific paradise on the beautiful island of Moorea in French Polynesia. Its got it all white beaches, turquoise lagoons and crazy tropical animals and fruit. It’s a slice of French Chic mixed with Polynesian culture on tropical islands in the middle of the south pacific. We had an Aito room five meters from the lagoon with great swimming and snorkeling. We went on massive walk around part of the island which was about 11 miles long although we saw cooks bay and loads of mountain and tropical scenery we didn’t intend on walking [View Full Entry]

After another 8.5 hours on a plane, we arrived in Tahiti at 5am and was picked up by our friendly hotel owner, Steve. Tahiti is incredibly beautiful and the scenery is breathaking. However, we were not quite prepared for the spectacular prices here and how much french we had forgotten since school! We ate a lot of baguettes and cheese and spent our first 3 days on Tahiti mainly snorkelling and swimming in the lagoon and reading books (yes, Rich does read). One day we hired a car and drove around the entire island which took about 4 hours. We went [View Full Entry]

Time for a surf Story!!!! I arrived in Tahiti early in the morning. Kendal was to arrive later that night. I had a day to kills so with swell forecast for rather large surf at what is considered to be one of the worlds most dangerous waves, and with my new acquaintances in tow, a couple from South Australia, that was exactly where we headed. I hired a little open top 4WD headed to the wave at the end of the Road: The notorious wave of Teahupoo. With my little reef experience this was an interesting proposition. After a number of [View Full Entry]

It was so good to be able to talk to so many of you before leaving for however long. It really meant a lot to me:) And of course, turning off the phone, my other appendage, was seriously difficult for me. Not being able to hear someone's voice you're close to is depressing. Ah well. You all best keep in touch! We left NYC yesterday at 5:15pm, and of course who do I meet at the airport who is at our gate and strangely enough heading to Cleveland? (He had a later flight.) Well, it's my last night on Moorea, back to Tahiti proper tomorrow for one night before getting my plane out to Auckland. As I'll be crossing the international date line on this flight, I'll be losing an entire day of my life (and trip). Not happy about that, let me tell you. Can't remember if I said already, but coming to the French speaking part of Polynesia has made me realise just how much I must've come to rely on my dubious Spanish skills. I really can't remember any French I learnt iin 5 years at school, barely even how to [View Full Entry]

Arriving to some guitars playing in the airport and a group of tribal dancers, Tahiti was looking promising, especially as it is their festival months.....and at 26 degrees at 5 in the morning we were hoping to see a bit of sun. We stayed in papette which was a bit of a dump and a little bit dodgey at night time...but we got the boat to the closest island, Morrea both days which was like a paradise island. The only down side was the rain!! [View Full Entry]
