Hello, It has been a while since I have written so its time to bring this blog up to speed. The remainder of NZ was mainly spent driving back up to Auckland, we stayed in a really nice hostel in Mt Eden (5 mins from Auckland city centre) called Bamber House, very homely! We didnt really like Auckland too much but it was nice to meet up with my uncle who lives out there. The city was pretty nondescript and a little boring really, I also dont think that the rainy cold weather helped its cause that much! So we dropped off our trusty hire care back at the airport (having covered some 3000km's!!) and headed for our next destination, Fiji! We were a little worried as when we boarded the plane there were literally hundreds ... read more

Wednesday 25 May: I arrived in Nadi at 4 pm and at the airport I met a Dutch guy called Wolf who I already met at the Park Travellers’Lodge in Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. We walked to the baggage claim, got our baggage and walked to Awesome Adventures Fiji where I booked a 6 days/7 nights/4 islands package called the Ultimate Lei. All transfers/accommodation and meals (breakfast/lunch/dinner)were included and because I chose the Full Monty package also all my activities were included. I also took some extra Fijian dollars to be able to buy some extra drinks or food at the islands. Then Wolf and me were picked up by a taxi that took us to our hostel in Nadi called Aquarius situated next to the beach. We checked in and ordered a pizza ... read more

I always knew that I wanted to travel. I thought with a world so big and full of possibility, who wouldn’t want see it all? Growing up in America, we’re told we live in the greatest country in the world, but I wanted to find out if that was really true and what the other places around the world had to offer. I knew that we were more progressive in the U.S., but as a liberal thinker, I had grown a little disdainful of the political games played here. I began to think about what life is like for other people in all those far-off and exotic places I had dreamed about. It wasn’t much longer after that, that I was starting to go to these places, and I made it a priority that as ... read more

We arrived in Fiji with little idea of what to expect. Tom thought it would be booze cruise tours, Ash thought it would be staying in huts with local families. We were both relieved and delighted to be wrong. It was everything that we wanted and hoped for. Incredible beaches on mountainous islands, crystal clear waters, and an amazing range of marine life and fantastic people. After all airport duties finished we boarded the Yasawa flyer, a high speed catamaran that took 4 hours to our first island resort, Blue Lagoon. We were welcomed by the workers singing to us before being taken to our 5 star 10 bed dorm room. For the first time on our trip our bags were carried for us!!! The resort was as laid back or adventurous as we wanted. We ... read more

Our adventure in New Zealand had come to an end and for me and Mark, the final part was about to begin. Only two months left to go (which is still a long time- about the same time we were in Asia for) However, before heading to the States, we had two weeks of relaxation in Fiji to attend to! We arrived in Nadi and transferred to our hotel for the night before heading off to the islands the following morning. We were booked onto a package tour of 12 days which takes you to 6 islands and also takes care of all the transfers, meals and accommodation. We awoke in the morning to a nice cooked breakfast as part of our welcome package and unfortunately for me, another bout of bites from bed bugs (welcome ... read more

Monday 20th December 2010 (Nacula Island – Eco-Haven Resort - Waya Lei Lei) A boat trip to Sawa-I-Lau caves from the film the blue lagoon was on the agenda today. The 1st cave was a large hall like space which was open to the sky, but the 2nd could only be reached via an underwater tunnel... As we had snorkels we were two of the first to enter into the almost pitch black cave, with the only natural light coming from a small hole at the far end. We made our way toward the light on our own and were surprised that it was actually brighter under the surface of the water than above. After exploring on our own a guide led the rest of the group to us with a torch for visibility and told ... read more

Friday 17th December 2010 (Nabua Lodge - Nacula Island) A coach picked us up after a rushed breakfast and took us to the port. We boarded the Yasawa Flyer, a large ferry, and travelled for 4 hours to the furthest set of islands in the Yasawa group to the north of Fiji. Our journey took us through a breathtaking blue Ocean dotted with small desert islands from the Mamanucas and Yasawas the entire way. Our home for the next 3 days was Nacula Island staying in a thatched beach hut at the basic but beautiful Nabua Lodge. We had to make do with a fan and no air conditioning, Richard wondered how we would cope? Electricity was supposed to be available from 10:00-12:00 and 17:00-22:00, but this seemed to change on a daily basis much to ... read more

Bula. A simple Fijian greeting. I love the way the natives allow the “la” to float off their tongue, as if gently sending a kind “hello” into the warm Fiji breeze. Then there’s the way the manly men of Fiji thrust out the word from the back of their throat, with a guttural emphasis on the “Bu” – Bula!! Reminiscent of the past days when fierce warriors would cannibalize the missionaries and British sea captains who tried to change their native way of life. Or perhaps my favorite way to use this greeting is sort of like a dance for the tongue, “Bula Bula!” said in rapid succession. Like our British friends lifting off an upbeat “Cheeri-o!”. However you say it, this one word pretty much defines our Fiji experience. A bit of relaxed warm breeze ... read more
