Two days ago I left the Northern Yasawas. The Yasawa Flyer (the boat I’ve been getting around on) went through the Blue Lagoon before we headed back down south. I stood up on the top deck and took photos, enjoyed the view one more time. Later that afternoon, I arrived at Mantaray Island where I’ve spent the last couple nights. Mantaray Island is named because in the waters nearby Manta Rays swim in the channel. Seasonally, you can snorkel with them. My guide book as well as a few things I’d read online before I left home said that the season went through into October, so I’d thought perfect, I’ll be able to see them. Once I reached the Yasawas however and met other travelers, I’d heard that the manta rays had already left! Sure enough, ... read more

One of Fiji’s most famous spots is the Blue Lagoon, from the movie of the same name. For the last 6 days I’ve been able to see the lagoon across the water from the islands I’ve been staying on. But today I finally went there. The resort where I’m staying offers boat tours over there every morning and afternoon and there was a group of us piled in the boat this morning. It was a slow ride over. The water is really choppy today and the boat we were in was just a small motorboat so we were being tossed around with the motor just going slowly. But we made it without losing anyone - just getting really wet from the water splashing. We went over to the far side of the lagoon first. Our captain ... read more

Yesterday I had another long day of “nothing” on the beautiful beach at Oarsman’s. Actually, I organized my photos and got this blog up to date which took plenty of time. I lounged in the hammock too, reading. I avoided time in the sun to let my skin have some relief from the sun. Today is the day I leave behind the beautiful beach here and move on to another island. But first, I took a long walk this morning along the side of the island. I walked to the end of the beach where my resort is, across a long row of rocks, along a couple more beaches and eventually reached a sandbar that stretched out into the ocean. Along the walk I saw literally hundreds of hermit crabs. Every step I took cause multiple ... read more

This afternoon, right after lunch, I said farewell to the island of Nacula where I’d been staying on a stunning beach. Then I cross the water to the next island over, Tavewa, where I’ll be staying for two nights. I’m staying now at another backpackers resort called Coral View. It doesn’t have the gorgeous beach out front, but I still really like it here. The property is spread out. All the buildings are within gardens. The pathways are lined with bushes with brightly coloured flowers. And my bed is super comfy! I spent some time exploring the property and the area around it. Behind my dorm is a pathway that leads to another beach on the Eastern side of the island. It’s nice but when I went over it was low tide so it wasn’t the ... read more

Hi ya all, been off internet for two weeks as been living on a Pacific Island with no internet and little or no telephone signal. So this blog a bit longer than usual to cover the past two weeks, publishing it after arriving in Sydney today. Also apologies to not sending any birthday wishes, especially to my partner in crime Gibbo for the 7th and also for not thanking people for sending me birthday messages. Also found out after I left Fiji that there was a 6.2 earthquake day I arrived! Arrived at Fiji airport in Nandi on the 7th September, with no accommodation booked. When you arrive at the airport you are welcomed by some guys singing and playing the guitar, cool. Once through customs, immigration and picked up my bag I headed to a ... read more

Thurs 26th We were up from 6am this morning after going to bed about 12.30am as we had to pack our stuff to take to the islands. The hostel is lovely that we stayed in last night and is right on the beach with cheap beer and food. We had to catch the ferry to get to our first island which took 5 hours to get to. We then had to transfer onto a tiny boat to get to the actual island. Some of the way we had to walk in the sea. Every single female staff came out to greet us and to sing us a welcome song. Bula means - hello. We arrived at an island called Coral View. We had hot dogs that day for lunch- never thought id have hot dogs on ... read more

Bula, So after sleeping for about 12 hours, I had a lovely breakfast of bread and orange juice and had to run to catch the bus transfer to the Yasawa Flyer (the big yellow catamaran that would take me around the islands). Passed the time to Octopus Resort (on Waya Island) with Rajni and Amit, who, upon arrival, were very jealous that they weren't going to be staying there - the resort was picture-perfect - beautiful beach, turquoise water over amazing coral, hammocks hanging up on palm trees. The dorm that me and Ben (backpacker I met on the transfer) were in was in a beachfront Bure, with only 5 beds, of which only me, Ben and one other guy were staying in. The whole atmosphere of the place was made even nicer by the fact ... read more

In July 2008 I had my first holiday in Fiji in the Yasawa group of islands with John. Now 2 years later I am back, but this time we have been invited on our friend Doug’s yacht ‘Hakura’. It has been a wonderful experience for so many reasons. It’s the best way to see the Islands at your leisure and explore places off the tourist track. It tests you physically (no anchor winch), mentally (what will I cook for dinner?) and it even tests friendships at times. But over this time I felt a nice inner peace & calm, or maybe I was just totally chilled out and enjoying the adventure. John & I met up with Doug & Lorraine in Suva on 26th August (my birthday). We had just had 5 nights on Beqa Island ... read more

When we arrived on Waylailai island we thought it was a little quiet and it turned out their were only 5 guests checked in that night. We spent most of the afternoon soaking up the sun and relaxing in the many hammocks they had around the lodge. We had three days and this would be the most relaxing of our time in Fiji. We woke early due to the hot temperatures and lack of air con and spent the entire day reading and sunbathing. It was spot on. We also met a volunteer from a local village, Ema, she was from Ireland and had been working in NZ before coming to Fiji for a holiday and ended up stopping on gthe island to teach kindergarden. She loved it but i do not think i could do ... read more

Hi all, Back again. Off to the lovely islands of Fiji. We got picked up at 7:30am and was transported by coach to port Denarau marina. We left almost straight away and landed on Bounty Island by 9:30am. It was paradise. well not quiet but it was lovely. We were in a massive dorm with 30 beds or so but we didnt mind. It was air conditioned and was the cheapest accomodation by far. The resort had a pool and loungers to relax. That day we sunbathed and took in the excellant weather and views. We booked 3 nights on Bounty Island, 2 in Octopus Bay and 3 at Wayalailai resort. The first 3 days flew over and we had sunshine every day. The only bad day was when we decided to go diving and the ... read more
