Air New Zealand no longer flies between the pacific islands so getting from the Cook Islands to Fiji was going to be long winded. We were subjected to a 4 hour flight from the Cook Islands to Auckland crossing the international date line making it no longer tuesday morning but wednesday morning. A 12 hour transit stop in Auckland then a 3 hour flight to Nadi. Tired and exhausted we finally made it to Fiji, our third stop. Touching down late at night is always a daunting experience particularly when the taxi turns off the sealed road and drives down a bumpy dirt track for 20 minutes! As we got out of the taxi we were met with an unlit resort, lots of bonfire smoke and no one around except a 30 tooth ankle nipper guard ... read more

For those of you paying attention I left you on Sanawai. Next up came the Sunrise resort on an island I'll fill in when i get my notes. There are a few things I should point out about here.... 1. We were told the food wasn't great. 2. We were told the P.R guy (that's what the hosts call themselves) is entertaining. 3. On the other side of the island the film 'Blue Lagoon' with Brooke Shields was filmed. 4. Britney Spears and Operah Winfrey stayed up the road. To clarify. The food wasn't any different to what we were already having. The P.R guy or 'Queen' as he was called reminded us of Bubbles from 'Little Britain' when he spoke. "Hello Darling" Oh and points 3 and 4 are true. Constantly a day ahead of ... read more

Its so hard to believe but the beginning of this week (actually Thursday, when our weeks begin) marked the half way point! its been four weeks in Fiji and we've got four weeks left before we go to Vietnam. I've got time to sit on the internet and add more pictures today because things went a little unexpectedly at work this morning... I showed up at Sabeto Village primary school this morning, like i do every Friday morning, this week with 11 highschool students ready to do some art and community service and we walk into the head teacher's office to find out that he wasn't there today. Some woman told us that this week is exam week so all the kids are taking exams all day. I was like ummm ok... get back in ... read more

Hi all! Have finally managed to find a decent computer so I can update you all! Spent almost a week on the Feejee Bus going rounf Viti Levu, the main Ilsand of Fiji. Saw loads, and really got to experience the Fijian culture and way of life. I visited villages, took part in a traditional Kava ceremony, went river tubing, visited a school, threw myself off the top of a waterfall, took part in a Bilibili raft race and went scuba diving....and that's only the beginning!!! The Kava ceremony was probably the most traditional part of the culture that I experienced. Kava is a drink made from the ground root of the Kava plant. It is a sacred drink, originally drank by the chief and his warriors before they went off to war. It is ... read more

We arrived in Nadi, Fiji last night after a pleasant and easy flight (for a change!) We are staying at Smugglers Cove, a hostel which again is on the beach. This time the beach isn't so nice but the hostel is great. Clean, air con, decent facilities, it's brilliant, never have I appreciated a hot shower so much! I've got a couple of pics of the view from the bar - they have a nice deck and pool but I haven't sampled it, it's been too hot today! We go on out Feejee Experience Bus tomorrow morning at 8.30am, and the days activities include visiting Nadi markets, a coastal village and sandboarding in the sand dunes!!! We're staying somewhere called Mango Bay, which from the brochure looks really nice too, hope it is as good ... read more

Turismi on taalla todella iso tulonlahde. Yllattava kylla, hinnat turi... read more

We arrived in Nadi on the 30th (pronounced Nandi) to blistering heat and four men in Hula skirts singing and strumming on their guitars as a greeting. Coming from New Zealand, we were used to efficiency and organization... It came as a bit of a shock when we were hurried into a "free" minibus to the town centre - which actually turned out to be a privately owned van for customers of a particular hostel! We were bombarded the whole way to the hostel with offers of various trips we could take to the nearby islands - Commission is obviously huge judging by the eagerness! After escaping the extremely persistent hostel worker, we enjoyed our first (of many) Fijian curries. 49% of Fiji's population is Indo-Fijian, hence the abundance of curry houses. When we got back ... read more

Aamulla kaytiin hieman tutustumassa kavellen kaupunkiin ja totesimme etta saavuimme syksyn k... read more

Apparently WAI TUI means "the ocean/waves/the sea" in Fijian (or something like that), and the WAI TUI International is the once-a-year international paddling competition in Fiji. "Paddling?" I hear you say, "how can that be a competitive sport?" . Ah, yes. We Europeans are not so used to this utilisation of the word paddling. What we are talking about here is outrigger canoes and I have included plenty of photos to illustrate...most are of the one-man canoe but there's also the 6-man (women) version if you look carefully....believe me when I say, it is no walk in the park. There were teams from all over: Australia, Samoa, New Zealand, USA, Tahiti and, of course, Fiji. But, um, what was I doing there you may ask, as , obviously, I've never paddled an outrigger canoe in ... read more
