Our journey down to Phnom Penh was fraught with lots of bumpy, wheel crunching, flooded roads but eventually we made it. For our first night we stayed in hotel 252. Everything was made of concrete; bed, wardrobe, bathroom, tv unit and bathroom. It was clean but the grey decor was odd and the bed very firm. Phnom Penh is unlike other parts of Cambodia, the smiley faces we had encountered previously have somewhat dissolved, replaced with miserable faces not out of place with what you would find on the London Underground. I blame it all on the seedy undertones that can be found all around the city. It does bring you down and it seems Cambodia is the perferred destination of the ozzy perverts and drunks, sorry if thats offensive but it is. During our time ... read more

The drive to Battambang was ok, we had a nice driver who was actually a guide but during low season was doing some driving to help suppliment his income. We stopped for a toilet break at a sandstone stall along the road and have to say experienced the cleanest, best squat toilets ever. White, shiny, non-smelly, they made a pleasant change from the usual Cambodian standard. Once we had arrived and settled into our hotel we thought we would spend the afternoon during a light spot of sight seeing however it turned into a marathon of cramming in as much as possible. First was the Bamboo train, a train which is basically a platform made of bamboo and a two stroke engine curiously balanced over a centre hole providing the muscle. Strangely enough this odd contraption ... read more

It certainly has been a week of reeking, the weather is hot, humid and moist. Just as we manage to dry off we seem to come face to face with either giant puddles or get caught in a sheet rain shower. Squelchy shoes and damp clothing is all too regular but conditions aside the place is so good it's worth braving the elements. Exploring the further afield Roluos group of temples and Banteay Srei has been incredible. The Roluos temples are some of the oldest Khmer monuments, all of which are centred around Hinduism and built with thousands of little bricks. It was during this final crusade of these lost temples we stumbled across a polite young man and the polite young mans grandad who plied their carving and sculpture trade at the roadside. The old ... read more

Tired and exhausted from the usual luxury and gorgeousness of the Maldives we felt in need of a large dose of rough, hence a travelling holiday. Welcome one and all to our mini blog selection from Cambodia. Eva Air, London Heathrow to Taipei was our passport to the Kingdom of Cambodia and I must stress what a quality porthole it was. Big plane, lots of room, even for the sheep. Quality fixture and fittings and a clean toilet kept all of the group satsified for the whole ten and a half hours it took to touch down in Bangkok. A ten mile walk to the transfer gate and a bit of messing around on a bus we were onboard our rotary powered aeroplane heading to Siem Reap. Now, through an unusual lack of time prior to ... read more

Due to our bargaining and pure tightness over the last three months we are left with a few spare rupee's in our pocket to blow lavishly in our final few weeks so Chandigarh was left in the dust of our taxi ride to Dehra Dun. It wasn't really meant to be a one night stopover but the town didn't really hold much appeal so we checked into a posh place, didn't really do a lot just planned our escape to Mussoorie which was one hour by a local grueller. Our arrival to Mussoorie was met with a monsoon battering. Mussoorie is a hill station and as such there are quite a few hills around the area so when the bus parked at the stop there was a slight problem. The deluge had created a road river ... read more

Amritsar; boiling hot, dusty and chaotic but home to the wonderful Golden Temple. Being one of only free attractions in India we were able to visit the temple at several times of the day. The first time was in the middle of the day which was not the best time as it swarms with hundreds if not thousands of pilgrims. As with all temples off came the shoes on went the head scarf and as this is a Sikh temple you have to wash your feet before entering. Like the Taj the temple and complex are made of mainly marble with the temple itself coated in a golden metal said to be gold though I'm not entirely sure this is true. The temple is situated in the middle of a sacred pool and there is a ... read more

The bus to Naggar was so crowded people were sat on the roof, luckily for us we've become seasoned pro's in the battle of boarding buses so we were happily seated for the journey. We were planning on staying actually at Naggar castle however it gets quite busy during the day, we didn't fancy people peering into our windows and the like so we opted for the hotel next door. The village is very small but there are views of the hills and mountains from every which way and other than a few cow's moo-ing the place is nice and quiet. The castle is interesting to walk around, its very well maintained however the museum is tiny, it kind of makes you wonder why they even bothered. The Roerich house a short walk from the village ... read more

About a month ago several bombs went off in Jaipur and on the morning we had planned to get a bus over there to complete our tourist trail of the golden triangle we heard Gujjar protestors were blocking roads and train tracks from Agra. We decided to give Jaipur a wide berth and head back to Delhi and have a re-think. The new plan was to head straight into Himachal Pradesh and explore the valleys and mountains a few weeks earlier than planned. The dusty bus journey from Chandigarh to Shimla was awful, we had to change buses three times and the drivers seemed intent on getting as quickly to the top as possible around very tight, scary bends on the high mountainous roads. As soon as we arrived we headed straight for the first hotel ... read more

After a delayed, boring flight we managed to arrive in Delhi at 9.30pm and were faced with a dilemma; do we go in a taxi and try to find a hotel in a dark, strange city or do we ask at Indian Tourism in the airport about accommodation. The latter seemed like the easiest solution so we headed straight for the counter in arrivals. The guy asked us roughly what we wanted to pay then said the cheapest hotel near the centre was R1590. The pictures looked a bit rough but it was fast approaching 10pm, we were tired and wanted to get to a room so we thought we would go with it for one night. We loaded ourselves into a taxi and sped towards the hotel. The air felt much cooler than in the ... read more

Kumily home to the Periyar wildlife sanctuary is thankfully situated at a highish altitude (1000m) and was a nice escape from the heat in the valleys. We arrived by bus as a continuation of our game plan to keep traveling short distances and were met by an auto-rickshaw who whisked us away from the town and to our accommodation, Coffee Inn, about three hundred yards form the park entrance. It was a quaint gaff that had a garden which doubled up as a restaurant over looking the park. The food was really nice however whenever we decided to eat there we had to factor in an hour of wait time as they were so painfully slow in bringing the grub out. The town was something of a reprieve from the rest of the places we had ... read more
