BULA!! "Bula is heard everywhere in Fiji (literally EVERYWHERE, all the time)! It is universally used to say hello, or welcome, and is even exclaimed if you sneeze! It means 'life' and is a way of wishing good health and fortune to the recipient." Wow, what a BEAUtiful place!! I landed in Fiji last Thursday night, the 14th and came back Monday morning, the 18th. We stayed in a backpacker hostel & hotel called Smuggler's Cove in Nadi, a big touristy city of Fiji. It was dark when we got there and all I noticed was that the stars were amazing and the ocean water was soo warm! Our hotel was pretty nice compared to the hostels we've been staying in; it had a restaurant that opened up to the deck, pool (if you wanted to ... read more

Bula Bula!! Well for the past 10 days we have been very busy - sunning ourselves on beautiful islands - its a hard life!! Arrived in Nadi from NZ & stayed for 2 nights then sailed off to island hop for a week. First we went up to the north of the Yasawa islands to Nacula Island - stayed at a typical Fijian resort run by the villagers who live on the island. We pulled up on the boat & it was just like you see on the TV - sandy beach & turquoise sea - paradise! Our room was a traditional Fijian bure - a little wood hut with straw roof - so cute! We stayed for two nights & spent the days relaxing (which was quite hard at first coz weve been so busy ... read more

Bula! It's the Fiji word for "hello" and it's the first Fijian word you'll learn. Arriving at night I wasn't sure what to expect. A few bula here and there at the airport. I was rushing at the airport knowing that I had to visit two offices to sort out the tours I had booked before taking the taxi to the accommodation. I was thinking that the taxi must be waiting and the staff would look at my booking quickly and send me off. I am told there is no rush and the staff were very laid back. I am in Fiji and it's Fiji Time from now on :) Fiji is a place I wasn't sure about and had mixed feelings. When I got to the hostel from the airport I looked at how many ... read more

I arrived at Fiji airport at 5.30am after sleeping for 7 hours on the plane. I sat on a bench waiting for the Fiji experience bus to turn up... in short... it didn't. I sorted it out though and eventually found the big green Fiji experience bus. There were about 20 of us on board - all really nice characters and easy to get on with. After about half an hour the bus stopped and we all piled out and introduced each other - we then had a barbeque on the beach and just chatted. The weather was scorching and I felt like a snowman compared to most of these people who had been travelling for months on end. After the BBQ we headed to a local village where our tour guide told us about the ... read more

We made it! After 10 hours on an incredibly cramped plane with 2 middle seats, a few glasses of wine, and some tylenol PM, we landed in Fiji at 5:30 am. Since they refused to check our bags through to Sydney for our 6:30pm flight , we left the customs area with all of our wordly possesions and decided that renting a car for the day would be the best choice (the public bus with 200 lbs of boxes seemed unmanageable). With an opportunity to get some practice driving on the left side of the road, we took off from the airport in an economy 4WD car trying to follow the flow of traffic. We found a mince meat pie for breakfast at the "Hot Bread Kitchen" and then kept on our way to Natadola Beach ... read more

I'd never have expected to have to use question marks after the statement that Fiji was tropical paradise but I'm afraid it is questionable. I'm back in Australia now (Melbourne to be precise) and haven't been at all well since Fiji but I am seeing the doctor and hope to be sorted soon! Unfortunately this has been the low point on my travels, let me elaborate; Days 1 -3 - Tropical Paradise Confirmed! I arrived from Sydney into Nadi airport to be greeted by local fijians playing instruments and singing at the airport which was a lovely touch. I got picked up by the hostel as arranged and taken to the hostel where Erin (the scottish girl I met on the East Coast) had already arrived. I spent the evening sitting by Nadi beach with Erin ... read more

HEY everyone! ok so here's a quick lowdown on my past week... to sum it up in one word...AMAZING...so many stories to tell... Ok so from labasa (where i think i last left off....) i got on a boat to vorovoro island (about half an hour away)...all was well...i met everyone...the way it works is there is a little village beside a fijian village set up for the tribewanted group (so as not to infringe entirely on the fijian culture...) we hire only fijian workers tho to work with us thus boosting the economy...its a very ecofriendly site...we live in bures (traditional fijian houses with thatched roofs) There is lots of recycling and composting of all food (if it isn't fed to the chickens or the pigs) we grow our own food for the most part ... read more

As this is my first entry, hi! Been in Fiji for two weeks now and this is my first entry mostly because there aren't that many computers around and i've been far two busy to spend any time on them. However I am now at a loose end having come back from the gorgeous Yaswas (pictures will follow once I have found a way to sync this with facebook) a day early thanks to my inability to read 14 as 14, hence i'm here on the 13th with my flight tomorrow not today. Got that? Anyway not interesting, if you're reading this you are probably more interested in what i've got up to, the answer is alot. The list includes sailing, diving, sandboarding, drinking (alot of that), partying, swimming, snockling, playing football with orphans (who ever ... read more
