I spent most of today packing up and organizing my things to take on the train. I walked into town and ran a few last errands and then I headed out to Freo to have a last visit with Kevin. We stopped at his fav pub for a drink and a nibble and then we headed over to the beach to watch the sunset over the ocean. It was so beautiful! I am so glad that I came over to Western Australia. I met some of the most amazing people and worked in a place way out of my comfort zone. I've made some lifelong friends and learnt a lot about myself. Working in a country pub was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. It gave me a huge confidence boost and ... read more

With a tent under our arms and a handbag stuffed with underwear we arrived into Fremantle station. The liberation of leaving Britannia Backpackers still surging through us. It was 11pm and a dark station and empty streets greeted us as did a sense of excitement. The clarity of the moment enhanced by the fact we didn't know where to go or where we would sleep. This was us again. We had just agreed to buy a car and had left the daily cycle of Britannia Backpackers. We were travelling again. We had heard there was a campsite around 'Freo', as the locals call it, but at this time of night there were no buses and we had no idea where it was. We asked a 'hippie' looking lady where we could camp who replied "I just ... read more

This morning, I made my way over to Fremantle. Hopped on the train, visited the E Shed Markets and then off I went to C Shed where I would be picked up to go whale watching. The engine of the boat immediately lulled to me sleep but just as I woke up and looked out of the window, I spot the first whale of the day. It's then whales galore as we follow three pods which are actually mothers, babies and some kind of male stalker/protector. Just as we were about to leave, the captain turned on the engine which resulted in a mother whale full-on breaching out of the water! It was spectacular to see this massive creature gracefully jump so entirely out of the water and sink back into it again. The trip was ... read more

Well, I am supposed to depart in about roughly twenty four hours and I can't seem to access my travel blog link from my email account so I fear for my audience when they can't read my literature of leisure? Damn you, Salazar! No worries, I'll fix it! : )... read more

Fremantle and Kings Park in Perth. I have just arrived in Mandurah 60 km south of Perth but need to write up the last 2 days. As Suzanne would tell you it is obligatery to have a boat trip on our travels . So this was the first one this trip . Travelling to Fremantle on the Swan River by boat takes about 1 hour and the shores are lined with homes of the very rich. Fremantle was gentrified somewhat when the Americas Cup came here a few years ago and it is a lovely small city …with lots of character…having maintained many of its old ( well you know when I say old I mean old for Australia) buildings and some have those beautiful Victorian wrought iron balconies. Of course there are lots of nice ... read more

I have a fairly good idea now, of how expansive and desolate Australia actually is. If anyone ever says something like "Well it's a big country" again, I will agree and say that yes, I know from experience. From hour after hour of orange dirt and pale shrubbery rolling past my window. From being able to see the flattest earth go all the way to the horizon in all directions, with nothing to break up the scenic monotony except a 2-foot tree every now and then; 2 feet being tall by Nullarbor Plain standards. That being said, life on the Indian Pacific is not bad. There's a lot of reading and chatting and snacking and napping. It's all very relaxed. Taking a train is a very different venture from taking a plane ride. It's a much ... read more

Ok, so that blog title has got you all interested...........Not quite true of course, I am in love, albeit completely unrequited love, with a woman I've never met. If my opinions/thoughts/musings on music, and live music in particular don't interest you, then you might as well stop reading now, because thats all this blog is about. Our first live gig in Australia. The lady in question is Julia Stone, one half of Brother/Sister duo Angus & Julia Stone. The big single from their new album gets a lot of airplay on the radio station we have on sometimes in the hostel. "Big Jet Plane" I'm not sure if it's a hit in the UK, if it isn't then it soon will be. We were sitting round the hostel one night and our german friend, Carina said ... read more

Hey everyone, Yes yes, it's been a while since you've heard from me. Sorry, but my life isn't that exciting right now. When i'm not sleeping I'm looking for a job and it's soooooo boring. After saying bye to my irish flatmates, Leahanne came and picked me up to take me to the airport. I couldn't ask for a better friend while I am over here. 4 hours and a nap later I arrived in Perth. Lucky me for having such awesome friends as Kevin was there to pick me up. Kevin and I met back in Ireland as well. He drove us in through Perth and along the Swan River. Perth is SO much smaller then Melbourne but it's super nice and very sunny and a lot warmer!!! We drove along some of the coastline ... read more
