Day 1 of Colman and Gaffers Most Bogus Adventures isn’t going to be the most exciting entry you will read on this blog but we said we would start from the start and so that’s what we're doing! Day one was the day that the car was bought! The car was a vital part of this trip and so after a lot of research, basically lounging around Sean & Emer's sitting room looking on gumtree, we found cars we were interested in and started viewing them. Not being the most knowledgeable in the world of cars and the mechanical soundness of them, we enlisted the help of Seamus and Pierce to have a look at the first car with us! Now, what this poor, unsuspecting American couple must have been thinking when 4 broad accented, Irish ... read more

After spending a couple of days in Perth it was time to head to the sea side, so with our bags packed we caught the train to Fremantle and checked in to the pirates backpacker hostel. With our bags dropped off we started wandering around. As its Easter weekend we timed it well with street performers filling the majority of the streets. We (Jo) also managed to find the market with lots of food and crafts on display; Will exercised great control in walking past all the food stalls as he hadn't had any breakfast yet. Next we walked up to the old jail. This was a working maximum security prison up until 1991. After nosing round the exhibitions and displays we headed for the coastline stopping and enjoying a little beach on the way. On ... read more

6 January - 15 March 2012 Well, our time at Coogee has finally come to an end. Looking back on our time living on the "other" side, I have some mixed but mostly happy memories bubbling to the surface. It has been a memorable experience living on the western side of the continent, albeit only for a short time. All in all, it has been 7-8 months (in two separate stints) living over in Coogee. The location has been brilliant - a very short stroll for the simple pleasure of feeling those fine white grains of sand between your toes and watching the most stunning sunsets plonked on the sand with a glass of plonk in hand. Holding on as tightly as humanly possible to those images of my two little boys running in and out ... read more

Sorry we have been bad bloggers while in New Zealand. We packed a lot into our short time there. Arriving in Christchurch in the middle of the night, our tent was vacuumed before we were let loose on the New Zealand flora and forna. We then had to walk a mile to get to our car rental, thats the service you get when you choose an 'el chepo' car and it really was 'chepo' many dents and rust spots meant we didn't have to worry too much about getting any fines. As you probalby know Christchurch was hit by 3 huge earthquakes last year which distroyed large parts of the city. What is less well known is that they are still experiencing aftershocks pretty regularly (one on Christmas day caused more damage). We arrived not sure ... read more

Nice and cool conditions to start the day so we decided to head out for a ride; destination - Swan Valley. As we drove towards Perth the cloud cover started to clear and it began to warm up but given the early start we were good to go. The Guildford Information Centre provided some very good maps of the Swan Valley region and the staff were extra helpful so we set out on a 16 km bike ride. The Swan Valley draws parallels with the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale with many wineries, breweries, distilleries and gourmet food outlets. The first half of the ride was as pleasurable as a ride gets and our stops had us sampling grapes, chilled red wine, gourmet coffee, chocolate and a refreshing pilsner. I think I overdid it on the ... read more

Well the first house sit has gone well. We quickly figured out that walking the dogs twice a day prevented 5:30 am wake up calls from the restless crew so that's been good on two fronts - sleep and extra exercise. The itinerary has been reasonably quiet this week but we're up early and have always kept ourselves occupied. The creature comforts of home have been welcomed especially as the mercury has risen again. In general we have been in fiscal lockdown - much easier to save on general expenses when we are off of the road so we've taken advantage of that. Prior to leaving Adelaide we sorted out a bike rack for the van but there was only one problem - no bikes. Rachel found a pair of good conditioned second hand mountain bikes ... read more

First impressions of Perth when we landed were the vastness of the sky, its blueness and the brightness of the light. Artists come here to seek out this crisp dazzling light I gather, it is quite startling. The other shocker was the heat – it was only 7am in the morning but we certainly felt out of place in our fleeces and jeans in the 25 degree heat – not as bad as others who had ugg boots on though! Having not slept on either flight and therefore meaning we had not slept for three days we have been catching up on some of that – quite tricky in this heat (it has been 41 degrees today). But that has not stopped us enjoying the differences; the beautiful exotic birds such as galahs, kookaburras & rosellas ... read more

Day two of taking the dogs to the beach was much more stressful than the first. We managed to lose Rocky’s chain and while leading Samson past some other people with two small dogs he somehow pulled out of his collar and went bounding back to................well I was not sure what he was going to do. Samson is a big playful thing but when you see him in full flight, as the two little dogs whom he wanted to get acquainted with did, it is a little unnerving. All is well that ends well. Crisis averted. Rachel and I decided to hop on the bus to Fremantle in the afternoon. Did I mention we love Fremantle? Having holidayed there last year it was nice to be back and just potter around for the afternoon. There are ... read more

Up with the sparrows to pack up the van and tent and off to our house sit we went. Once we arrived we just unpacked the bare essentials as the boys (the dogs) were getting restless. They were clearly telling us it was time for the beach. It is a bit of an exercise getting them on their leads and into the car as Rocky is a big boned Labrador and Samson, although only a year old, is a beautiful but very large French mastiff. Rex is the easy one and sits nicely on Rachel's lap. All in all the first trip with the boys was a success. They are actually well trained and look after themselves. There were a few other dogs on the beach this morning and we didn't want to tempt fate first ... read more
