Hello everyone and happy belated Canada Day from Australia! I’ve been working the past couple of weeks in Fremantle (a 30 minute train ride south of Perth) in a food processing factory. I wish I could say that it was glamorous work, but that would be a lie. I got the job through a guy who advertised on the backpacker’s job board. The deal is that you stay at his place and you have a job at the factory, you leave his place and you leave the job. The house is very nice and at the time I needed work so badly I didn’t really care much about anything else, but now that I’ve been here for a little while, I am starting to have second thoughts. Wednesday March 2nd, 2011 Indian Ocean Latitude 27 degrees 47 minutes’ south- Longitude 113 degrees 11 minutes’ east Indonesia lies to the north and from where we are now it seems distant, foreign and foreboding. Off our starboard rail is Australia and it seems familiar and quite wonderful. Like an old friend that you have not seen in a very long time, as soon as you are together again, it seems as if no time has passed. It has been 30 years since I was in Australia and while many things have changed, I still have the same overall feeling of contentment and satisfaction at having visited again. We had allocated Saturday to visit Freemantle. By this time we had realized that we had packed a lot into a week, and maybe we should have scheduled a few rest days in the schedule!. We had decided to make it late start and leave for Freemantle at around 11:00 am. Diane caught up with some ironing and me with e-mail and blog. Cath gave us a lift to the station, where we boarded the train to Freemantle. This took about an hour with a change at Perth.
