Hello again from the Land Down Under! Last week, I left off with the fact that I was settling in here at Perth and beginning my first week of work in the lab. Now I have been here for over two weeks and am feeling quite adjusted to everything but the cold weather! Yes, it still is freezing cold here! At night, it is getting down to around 4'C, and I have four covers on my bed to keep warm. Apparently, this weather is very unusual for this time of year and everyone here is just as disgruntled about it as me. That being said, this past weekend the weather cleared up for the afternoon and I was able to make it over to Fremantle for the day. Fremantle is a historical port city south of ... read more

Hello everyone and happy belated Canada Day from Australia! I’ve been working the past couple of weeks in Fremantle (a 30 minute train ride south of Perth) in a food processing factory. I wish I could say that it was glamorous work, but that would be a lie. I got the job through a guy who advertised on the backpacker’s job board. The deal is that you stay at his place and you have a job at the factory, you leave his place and you leave the job. The house is very nice and at the time I needed work so badly I didn’t really care much about anything else, but now that I’ve been here for a little while, I am starting to have second thoughts. The problem is that I am only getting about ... read more

Thursday 28th and it was nice to wake up to a clear blue sky. We hadn’t planned anything special for today but, after an hour or so of “thinking”, we decided to go off to Fremantle (Freo) for the day. It was only 35kms away so, with the very good suburban road network, we seemed to be there in no time. We’d spent quite a bit of time there eight years ago and quite liked it so we thought it would be good to visit again. We were able to drive right into the heart of Freo and parked within easy walking distance of the Round House and the Maritime Museum, two of the main tourist attractions. Freo is the main port for Perth and manages very successfully to combine being a busy industrial area and ... read more

Wednesday March 2nd, 2011 Indian Ocean Latitude 27 degrees 47 minutes’ south- Longitude 113 degrees 11 minutes’ east Indonesia lies to the north and from where we are now it seems distant, foreign and foreboding. Off our starboard rail is Australia and it seems familiar and quite wonderful. Like an old friend that you have not seen in a very long time, as soon as you are together again, it seems as if no time has passed. It has been 30 years since I was in Australia and while many things have changed, I still have the same overall feeling of contentment and satisfaction at having visited again. The spirit of the people is alive and well. They are hardworking, industrious and obviously successful. The cost of living is expensive in our terms, but that is ... read more

Our blog - Log 9 From Monday 21st February After a drive around Kings Park and walk to the war memorial in the park which commands a wonderful view of the Swan River and city of Perth we went to the airport and collected Celia (my sister and Janet’s mum) who flew in from the UK. We then had a lovely dinner at Char Char Bull in Fremantle meeting up with several of Janet’s friends. On Tuesday we had a swim in the pool before packing up and setting off for Margaret River a very famous wine producing area. Amazing scenery all the way down. We stopped off in Bunbury on the way down for lunch - spectacular beach. We arrived late afternoon at our apartment in the centre of Margaret River and found it was ... read more

Back again and now seem to have been at sea for ages after visiting Mauritius. The weather since Mauritius has been pretty awful considering we are in the Indian Ocean and in my head it wasn’t going to be like this – varying between grey, darker grey, bits of blue (but not very much), drizzle, pouring rain and blowing a gale!!! Hmmmph – tan will be fading. When we arrived in Mauritius there were huge queues to get off the boat – beginning to see where the queue comes from in Cunard! Apparently it was down to Mauritian immigration people or lack of them that held everything up. But I have now decided to keep smiley face plastered on and not become flustered and grumpy like many of the passengers so spent time chatting gayley to ... read more

We had allocated Saturday to visit Freemantle. By this time we had realized that we had packed a lot into a week, and maybe we should have scheduled a few rest days in the schedule!. We had decided to make it late start and leave for Freemantle at around 11:00 am. Diane caught up with some ironing and me with e-mail and blog. Cath gave us a lift to the station, where we boarded the train to Freemantle. This took about an hour with a change at Perth. When we got to Freemantle we headed for the market and from there to the Maritime museum, our intention was next to visit Freemantle Prison but the heat of 32 degrees and a long week of sightseeing was taking its toll, we decided to call it a day ... read more
