Arrived on the 10th June in Perth and went straight to Fremantle. Stayed with a wonderful couple called sue and John who pretty much showed me the local side of Freo. From the 10th till the 23rd June I stayed there and pretty much took the train back and fourth from Perth to get an insight into the city which is known to be the most isolated one in the world. Perth is not dissappointing, most people say there is not very much going on in perth, well obvously compared to London and Sydney thats true but with an objective eye Perth is certainly a pretty nice city which stretches for miles in all directions the nicest of suburbs surrounding the banks of the Swan River, its pretty simple really. Hi all. Since settling in to life here we don't do too much out of life routines to be updating the site all the time. Well what has been going on. Since Nards birthday and a bit of a birthday bash he went for a joyflight in a Cap 10 aerobatic plane. We all set ourselves up on the foreshore out the front as the weekend before we were watching the same plane form there. However for clear airspace they had to go further down the coast to do all the tricks and all we saw was a fly by (Nard actually had his hands on the controls). We have been for drives out to the water dams up in the hills. We went to a botanical garden called Araluen further north in the hills. Jules ... read more

Fremantle is Perth's port, situated just 25 minutes away from Perth by train. If the world at large knows anything about Freo, it's that it was the home port for Australia II, first non-American winner of the America's Cup (and another venture backed by Alan Bond). Its history includes being the site where many immigrants first set foot on Australian soil and even today it is Western Australia's main commercial port. Though Perth has sprawled to the point where its suburbs meet Freo, the residents of Fremantle are quite keen to maintain a separate identity from their Perthian neighbours - in much the same way as Western Australia views the rest of the country. To me, Freo also meant the current abode of one Mr Gavin Corfield, aka Garfield, a friend from my university days, his ... read more

It's been a while! Landed in Australia well over a week ago and haven't had any spare time until now because we've been working for Conservation Volunteers Australia CVA. So we arrived in Aus 9 days ago on Friday 19th and straight away met up with CVA who very kindly gave us the weekend off!! So we took advantage of that on the Saturday by going into the town of Freemantle which is just outside Perth on the coast. It's a very nice seaside town, it has that seaside charm without the seaside tackiness that some places in England have. For example we visited Freemantle Market - now markets in England have greasy cafe's, buskers playing Bob Marley, cheap crap stalls and fruit and veg! The market in Freo has Cappucino stalls, buskers singing Oprea (!), ... read more

Hi to you all. A while scince our last blog update. No we have not dropped off the face of the earth however now I am working there is less time to play up on the computers. However, now that I am at work, literally at work on a sleep shift I have some time to update while the residents sleep. After having some issues with starting work I have scince been in training. For a month. Not that I have not been doing this job now for 10 years and have more qualifications than most staff I am working with but I was not so much as allowed to take a resdents for a walk in the park unsupervised. Can you tell my frustrations in the tone of my computer voice. However, I have in ... read more

Tuesday 4th April 2006 - Arrived in Australia!! - Oh my god!!! How exciting! - I was quite shocked I was sooooo excited and grinning like a Cheshire cat when I landed! I thought I’d be scared - but no! As soon as I got off the plane I phoned mum and dad and Johanna; before I’d even left the airport - I was so excited I had to tell someone I’d arrived - even though it was only about 7am back home!! I couldn’t believe I was actually in Australia. All the random thoughts and plans with Bea and Chris and cheers of joy from Karen and Sarah had become real! I was actually miles and miles from home and I’d done it and was still alive, very happy and giggling to myself like a ... read more

Feb 18 - 24 Jez and Mel came up from Margaret River this weekend to hang out with us and their family in Fremantle. Nard and I tagged along and went on a tour of the Fremantle prison. First a convict colony and then a prison up until the 1990's. Not a place I would have holidayed at the time. Jules and I finally got a day to hang out and on Sunday morning went to the markets in Freo. Nard began working this week for a company that makes bali huts and decks to go into peoples back yards and resorts. We managed to catch a movie (Date Movie) and I (still unemployed) went to Freo with Sandy. Feb 25 - 3 We went to see Narnia at the outdoor cinema at Kings Park. Nard ... read more

Well I didn’t exactly forget to update the travel blog but we’ve been pretty busy and internet cafés haven’t exactly been jumping out at us - unlike the local wild life. Speaking of which, one thing I did forgot was how annoying flies are - and judging by my families reaction after 15 years in Australia I guess it’s something you never get used to… So let me take you back to Oz as we are currently in India (where the computers are about the same speed as the cows in the street but a little less frequent). The last time I wrote I was heading down south of Perth towards Bunbury to surprise who looked after me many years ago. So I left the Old Fire Station in Freo and headed south, to say Brian, ... read more

The World doesn’t care about Australia. Australia doesn’t care about Perth. This is great! No one cares what happens out here! Anything goes! - James E. Lynch, Jr. Had my cousin, James the Wise, not been living in Fremantle for the past 5 months, there’s little to no chance that I’d have landed in Western Australia at any point in my life. But then again, I’ve learned that there is a glimmer of method to Jamie's madness, as the trip to WA has been much more than I expected. The entire trip to WA had been rather suspect due to the fact that I couldn’t get in touch with Jamie until just about a week prior to arrival. But as this journey has worked, the unplanned has proved the most fun and the day after arriving ... read more
