A new Broome Sweeps Clean. day 1335 Its funny, how you know how you week is going to turn out, as things unfold, It was 7.40pm on Monday 2nd July, when I got an e-mail from my boss, asking me to make flights plans as he wanted me up in Curtin, on Tuesday if possible. The “Company” had been talking about sending me to Curtin for the last three weeks so I wondered what had become so urgent, I knew that there was no chance of getting to Curtin on Tuesday, the nearest would be Perth staying overnight and flying on to Broome on Wednesday 4th July. It was our Four wheel drive meeting on Tuesday night and I would have been ticked off, if I missed that, but I was comfortable in the knowledge that ... read more

I’m well aware that this saying usually refers to two year old toddlers but in my case it refers to my terrible Term Two. Perhaps terrible is a slightly more powerful word than is necessary but, it has undoubtedly been a very trying term with lots of challenges and… while it’s not quite over yet, since it’s nearing the end of Week 8 and I’m so over it - I have made the call to put an end to all the crap stuff. Classroom life has been unique - but the internet is not the place to discuss such matters. It is true to say that I have never been as tested behaviourally as I have this term, but fingers crossed vital progress is being made. The most unexpected part was how much energy I was ... read more

Derby – Beyond the Boabs. 3rg June 2012 After picking up the Trakkie in Broome from Keshi Storage, who were very accommodating, it was onwards and upwards to Derby with some trepidation as we had heard a lot of mixed reports about the town, in fact we had spoken to several people who were not even going to go in there! Derby is also in there as ‘The Gateway to the Gorges’ and where the real Kimberley Region begins and was the first town settled in the Kimberleys. The Port of Derby was first established in the 1880’s and was a landing point for Wool Shipments. The first jetty was built in 1894 and linked to the main town by horse drawn tramway, wool and pearl shell in the early days were the mainstay of the ... read more

When the alarm went off at 4am I have to admit that it was a struggle to raise my head, but I had a feeling it was going to be worth the effort. Neroli and I packed our gear and headed out to the jetty for 5am. We met the guys, they had been there since 4.30 and were keen to get going. As we headed out it was kind of strange to see the jetty from the water side. When the sun started climbing with all the pinks, purples and reds it was truly beautiful. The trip out into the blue water was pretty rough, but only by Derby standards, I hadn't taken a sea sickness tablet and didn't feel sick but maybe that was becasue I was riding up the front. Poor Neroli got ... read more

I spent my last day in Perth on Rottnest with my wonderful sister and all the things I love best in the world. I swam and drank and laughed and was completely and utterly happy. It was a glorious day and the perfect way to finish up my summer. Australia day night was spent in our neighbour’s garage at the annual street party. The rain, thunder and lightning kept us all entertained and there was so much amazing food I wished I could have packed a lunchbox for the plane. I snuck inside to finish packing up my mountain of stuff. All I can say is thank god ill be back in march I had to leave so much stuff behind. I crawled into bed and was asleep before dad even had a chance to say ... read more

Week 7 is over and I can’t believe there is only 1 more week of 2011 Derby-life. It was always going to be a sad week, my good, good friends, Bec and Caitlyn left Derby on Tuesday. Their 1 yr Kimberly adventure was over and although I know there will be more friends next year, these girls were pretty special. We had jetty drinks and a proper family dinner on Tuesday night. Then they did the ‘leaving town’ ritual and gave away their entire pantry/unwanted items to X-ray Pete and me. Wednesday was almost unbearable as the temp climbed to beyond 44 degrees. I pretty much went insane- my poor class. Thursday was no better but at least we won our netball and volleyball games. On Friday I was thrown head first into the world of ... read more

You know what they say about the build up? They reckon it makes people crazy. I think the events of this week have proved that theory is right on the money. School pretty much sucked this week. I'm not going to go into it since I'm putting this online and all but I will say that by Friday I needed about 10 additional hours sleep and at least 2 nights of steady drinking to forget about my week. Moving on from school, Friday night eventually arrived. We hadn't had drinks at the jetty for ages so Katie and MJ decided we would go down and watch the sunset. There was a nice breeze which kept the mozzies away and for the first time in ages I didn't have to use any repellent. I left the jetty ... read more

Week three went so fast it seems like a bit of a blur. Monday was a bit of a slog after a lovely long weekend at Barn Hill. I was right back into it on Tuesday though. In fact, all this week I got to school around 6am and was quite productive getting report comments written. The other big thing which happened on Tuesday, was that it rained in Derby. The first of the wet season and right on time- being the 1st of November and all. We did a rain dance to celebrate, although it was short lived it was definitely appreciated. On Wednesday our team played netball and afterwards went out to tea together. I finally managed a decent couple of serves in volleyball on Thursday and we hit the Boab on Friday night. ... read more

No rest for the wicked, as the saying goes. So... happy that Mia was safely back in Perth the usual Derby crew geared up for another corker. Friday night was messy. Prue had a big BBQ and lots of wine was drunk. We were separated at the Boab cos they locked the doors before we all managed to get in. After another glass of wine we decided to meet up with the others at the King Sound but not before we planked a cement mixer and the new term Plonkatonk was coined. We arrived just as they called last drinks. The management informed me several times that she didn't like me playing with the Halloween displays. I obliged and found a fan (121166). Saturday morning was rough but it was Corporate Cup Day so after a ... read more

With Week One finished already it's pretty hard to believe there are only 7 more weeks before I have to send my class onto bigger and better things. Of course, weather wise it was a scorching week and during the weekend I honestly felt like I was going to melt. There was no relief despite two consecutive forecasts for rain (now I really do sound like my dad). Friday night was pizza night at Jila before a free Pigram bother concert at he Spini. It was an earlish night and I was in bed by 12.30am Saturday I continued to melt and despite trying to get some reports started I failed. Too hot for work was what I told myself. Instead I aimlessly roamed the house and garden looking for cold spots which didn't actually exist. ... read more
