colourful bug
The kids founds this beautifully coloured bug when we went cheribun fishing out at Kambalin I’m well aware that this saying usually refers to two year old toddlers but in my case it refers to my terrible Term Two. Perhaps terrible is a slightly more powerful word than is necessary but, it has undoubtedly been a very trying term with lots of challenges and… while it’s not quite over yet, since it’s nearing the end of Week 8 and I’m so over it - I have made the call to put an end to all the crap stuff.
Classroom life has been unique - but the internet is not the place to discuss such matters. It is true to say that I have never been as tested behaviourally as I have this term, but fingers crossed vital progress is being made. The most unexpected part was how much energy I was using just rocking up to work each day. At one point it ended up being too much and I had to take some stress leave.
With a relatively low immune system, I suppose it wasn’t that surprising when gastro took hold of me and gobbled me whole (seriously that is what it felt like). The most disappointing part was it sucked the life
out of me during one of the best party weekends on Derby’s relatively limited social calendar. Yep, stuck in bed while everyone else is out having fun is a real downer.
Of course, there have been wonderful things about the last eight weeks too. As soon as I got back from Perth I went out to May River for the first time with some local families and had one of the best days, swimming and fishing and running amuck with the kids. The ‘Spini’ also had its official opening and James Rayne played there. It was a big night with lots of dancing and general Friday night antics. I’ve also spent a few nights in Broome courtesy of CEO and enjoyed the ‘city life’ shopping and eating out there. A few of us also went camping out at a place called “Tumbles” where I saw my first, wild salt water croc (scared the life out of me) less than 5 metres away. I loved that weekend the most. We caught barra on the hand line and ate it straight off the coals. We even caught saw-fish but they’re protected so it was just a quick photo before they were
set free again.
Only 3 more weeks until I hit Fijian sand and surf and for me, this is the light at the end of the tunnel. I can’t wait to have a proper rest. Before then there is still so much to do; reports and parent interviews, theatre restaurant, Derby Cup, grandparents arrival, yearlong friends departures and probably some surprises mixed in just to keep things interesting.
I hope this entry doesn’t make me seem ungrateful for all the wonderful experiences I have. Yes, I have a great life and amazing support. It is true that these past eight weeks have really shone light on who those people (both near and far) are and just how sensational Derby people are when things get tough.
