Welcome to March!! Not long after Kellie and Ryan got here, they texted me one night to ask if we wanted to go and see Rod Stewart with them. Ricky wasn't keen and the tickets were a bit expensive as I wasn't working at the time. So they got tickets, and Caroline and Tucker got tickets, then another couple from England we are friend's with got tickets. Great! So, a couple of weeks ago I thought I would look on ebay on the off chance there was a ticket going...and there was!! I was well excited, although a little worried about the prospect of being outbid in the last few secs. But I took my chances and I won!! And I only paid $10 more than the original price. Excellent! We have been taking turns to ... read more

February is Melbourne Bank Holiday galore!! It also marks the end of the summer too unfortunately. Summer here has been a blast with the long hot days, nearby beaches, sitting outside all night having some food and wine - amazing! Also in summer, there are lots of free activities to partake in, like orchestras in the Botanical Gardens, concerts in Fed Square, outdoor cinema and trapeze lessons. Yeah, you heard me, TRAPEZE lessons!! It was all set up in the city square and I had noticed it was there over the previous couple of weeks, but never thought that it was available to everyone or free for that matter!! Since the start of the summer, we had been saying to Kellie and Ryan and Caroline and Tucker that we would do the Yarra Valley wine region ... read more

I guess before we actually left to come out here neither of us really thought it was actually going to happen. So not really wanting to build up any hopes, I hadn't really looked into Melbourne in any real detail before getting here. I did intend to read the tourist guide books on one of the three flights - but you have already read about them and, really, reading on a long hall flight with a free bar was never really going to happen. So what little I did know about Melbourne, largely attributable to watching Neighbours when I was at school and general things you hear actually turned out not to be really that similar to what I have actually found. Firstly, it turns out that the taxi driver that picked us up at the ... read more

Well, having got completely drenched in Halls Gap, we head South East to the Yarra Valley and a little town called Healesville. Our original plan had been to stop at Hanging Rock and have our lunch - yes a picnic & no we know we're not that original. Firstly, we'd gone a bit wrong with our time / distance estimates & had already stopped for lunch a couple of hours before we got to Hanging Rock and secondly we refused to pay the extortionate amount that Parks Victoria wanted to charge us for merely parking our car for 30 mins or so while we scrambled up to the rock, took a few photos and scrambed back down again. We just tootled a few K's up the road & managed to get some great shots anyway. ... read more

Hoi hoi allemaal!

Finally got round to uploading a whole load of photos! There aren't any notes with them as it would take too long on so many pictures. Still in Yarra Junction and all's cool. It's Jay's birthday today so we're going to hit Melbourne for the weekend - probably going to hang around St Kilda on Friday night I reckon and take the rest of the weekend as it comes. Then back to working on the orchard for a couple of weeks then my brother Chris arrives for a fortnight of fun!! http://www.bubbleshare.com/users/profile/115820 If that link doesn't work for whatever reason, just type 'Nick Weaver' in the search box and find the link to my new photos - there should be 8 new folders on there to peruse. The quality and size have been reduced so that ... read more

Our last day before we move to another orchard was a very short day. The boss knew it would be a short one so we were treated to a lie-in until 8am - sweet! Work started at 9am and 1 ½ bins later we were back on the bus and heading home. We did bugger-all for the rest of the day and just took it easy. The plan was to have a good cook-up in the evening accompanied by a large number of Toohey’s New Extra Dry - i.e. tasty beer. We got involved with some chunky T-bone steaks, lamb breast ribs, sautéed spuds and barbecued courgettes and red peppers. The meat here is well cheap - the T-bones were a steal at just under $11 - $3.60 each works out at under £1.50 each and ... read more

Job hunting’s rubbish. Over the weekend I had started to consider the possibility of staying in Melbourne and finding some work other than seasonal, fruit-picking type work. I liked Melbourne pretty much as soon as we arrived and I thought it was definitely somewhere I could happily stay. The fact was we needed money fast and would be up for doing pretty much anything. However, in order to get the second year visa extension, we still needed to do another 6 weeks of work on the harvest trail. We booked another night in the hostel and spent the day looking for jobs - mainly on the Internet. It wasn’t looking too good. Around Melbourne the two main areas for seasonal work are north and east of the city. Heading north, around Shepparton was one option, but ... read more
