Prologue: It's taken a while but we're finally on the road again. We missed out on our planned Danube ride in 2020, so we've taken that and run (ridden) with it. We added the Rhine and Main Rivers to come up with a trans-European route only to realise it was probably a little further than we could fit in our available time. Not only that, but the Danube flows into the Black Sea at Constanta on the Romanian coast, just a little too close to Ukraine and "Mad Vlad" for our liking. Instead, after reaching Belgrade via the Danube trail, we'll head south and east through eastern Europe ending up at Istanbul. It's still going to be an epic adventure. We'll visit 14 countries (I think?) and travel roughly 4,500km over 3 months (well, that's the ... read more

21/2/18 Today we got a move on and walked to St. Kilda pier to catch the 10:00 ferry to Williamstown. We have been promising ourselves that we will make this trip for about 3 weeks. We got on the ferry, which was a very small ferry and were greeted by Robb and Doug, the crew. We were heartened to see that they were sporting epaulets on their shirts that made their shorts look more official. After waiting about to see if any more people turned up, we set sail, across Hobsons Bay, with just four passengers and tied up in Williamstown after about 25 minutes. On my own initiative, I went along the pier about 100 yards, and had a quick look at HMAS Castlemaine which was a minesweeper built in Williamstown in 1945. I guess, ... read more

Two more sleeps before the Four Amigos start their epic adventure traversing the "Land of the Free". Visas and Insurance in order. We've all selected our "stallion" of choice. Degreased and cleaned. New shiny bits bought. The biggest question to answer still, do we use Road cleats or MTB? We've organised accommodation in LA, not sure if we have a car yet? Plenty of time for that. The nerves are starting to tingle as it sinks in that 5000kms is a bloody long way to pedal. Especially as we have 3 mountain ranges to cross before hitting Baltimore 5 weeks later. So let's introduce the Amgos . . . Amigo #1: Jeff Hilder: Age: Younger than he looks Description: Hasn't been big on training, except the one he caught back from Frankston last week. He will ... read more

We caught the tram to flinders st station and then changed on to the train which we caught to Williamstown beach. It was a 5 minute walk from the station to the beach which was almost empty and it had a very calm sea; which was a nice change from the other beaches we’ve visited so far in Australia. We settled in to relax on the quiet beach with our books and before we knew it 4 hours had flown by, and we had to pack up and head to the port to catch a Ferry back to the city. Although we did find time to pick up a traditional Aussie pie to enjoy on the ferry home. The journey back took an hour along the Yarra river, which passed through an industrial area and a ... read more

Ellie and I are into our final four weeks in Melbourne and only have nine weeks in total left of our travels. We haven't been up to much since Christmas apart from enjoying the sunshine and hot weather (it hasn't rained for over a week in Melbourne which is very unusual!). Ellie is still working at her place but I have now gone to an 'on-call' temp at my place because the work has died down. I worked two days last week and (potentially) three days this week. It's a bit of a shame that I am not working full-time but oh well, work is work! At the weekend we took a river cruise down to Williamstown. We boarded the cruise in the CBD and took an hour and a half cruise down the Yarra River ... read more
