We left Cairns on Wednesday morning and headed south. We had spent a few lovely days with Liz and Graham who are fantastic hosts, but now it was time to turn our heads towards home. We made good time driving back towards Townsville. The going was fairly easy, though there were many large vehicles on the road. We passed the many cane fields and had to stop for the Cane Trains as this was the start of the cane harvest. We skirted Townsville and then headed along the coast. For lunch we decided to stop at Ayr but I was driving and saw a pub in what I thought was the outskirts. However, this proved to be the Hotel Brandon. Here we had a counter lunch. I chose lasagne and Fletcher, predictably the Seafood basket. Both ... read more

Another big day! We slept pretty well beside the river. Took our time getting ready, pommy wash this morning. First stop was just up the road in Parkes. Had some breaky in a French bakery in a VERY Aussie town, run by a smiley Asian couple. Very unique experience especially when English was definitely not their first language. Then to the DISH! Great to see. We were lucky to catch it doing its 360 degree movement. It looked great! Its huge! There was some amazing photography of the universe on their walls too. We are mere specks of universal dust when its all said and done! We continued up the Newell highway. Trucks, trucks, and even more trucks! It’s a good straight drive and though pretty repetitive, there’s still some beautiful scenery. Lunch stop was Cooney, ... read more

Stocking the larder and fuelling the vehicle were top priority before leaving Narrabri. One of the challenges of refuelling is finding bowsers that are not covered by a low hanging roof. This often means joining the queue of caravans and trucks. At the first station we visited all the outside bowsers were ‘temporarily out of service’ so we had to find another place. Often located on corners, petrol stations can be easy or challenging to enter and exit. This one was located on a busy corner with the queue hanging dangerously close to the main traffic thorough fare. A unique range of vehicles seemed to be going in all directions; backing here and there as though they owned the place. One vehicle caught Greg’s attention; a pig hunting set up. A 4x4 equipped with large roof ... read more

We are now travelling through the “Western Downs” which is cattle country, so we see lots of road trains transporting cattle. Are they supplying the new deal with Indonesia that was recently negotiated by Tony Abbot? We are also seeing lots of prickly pear plants. These are the remnants of the major outbreak which occurred early last century and was finally brought under biological control using “Cactoblastis”. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cactoblastis_cactorum One of the weird things that can occur when travelling is the change in price for specific vegetables. Back home asparagus was expensive at about $3 a bunch but here we have bought it for less than a $1, together with similarly cheap snow peas. With a little Oyster sauce they are a great combination. Yum! As we approached Miles we star... read more

Sunday 16th October dawned a very much brighter day. The sun was shining as we began packing away our personal bits and pieces ready for our journey to Goondiwindi – about 200 kilometers away. We hadn’t fully realised just how much stuff we had brought over from the caravan whilst staying at David’s so the packing up took a bit longer than we planned but by 9:30am the car was packed to the gunnels. Armed with a huge Dorset Tea Cake (made by David of course) we said our cheerios to him and made our way to be fully re-united with Sweetie, the caravan. The transfer went pleasingly well and soon after 10:00am we had wound our way through Warwick and were well on the way towards Goondiwindi. Traffic was light and progress was good although ... read more

Today was a bit of a late start. A great day to eat pancakes to celebrate the beginning of the journey. We headed out of Tamworth with the good intentions of making it to St George. Alas, the slow driving and late start meant a change of plans. Whichever way we travelled, we were getting to Queensland. There is something special about getting into your caravan and then making your own lunch. We chose a quiet spot by the river in Narrabri. A great way to relax somewhat while travelling. Each day doesn’t complete without it’s glitches. Today’s glitch was the hitch. Yes, the weight distribution hitch that I installed was not travelling well, and didn’t really do what it was supposed to. In fact, many of it’s parts had worked themselves loose. The worst of ... read more

Wednesday 13th July Packed up and headed to Goondiwindi, Qld (just over the boarder of NSW) along the Newell Highway - not impressed with this road - very rough and lots and lots of intimidating semi-trailers. Just out of Moree we received 2 chips in the windscreen from a stone flung up from a passing truck. Gave us both a big shock - the windscreen did not shatter just left two large chips. Booked into the Gundy Star Caravan Park for 2 nights ($28pn) which did not look too flash with the highway on one side and the railway line on the other side but turned out to be a lot of fun. The park supplied a damper and coffee each night around a wood fire which is a great way to meet fellow caravaners. We ... read more

This is a catch up Blog Well back to Gundy & got organised for Xmas.Poor Nicky had been bitten by a dog on her leg & was worried as she has to have an op on her knee in January. Poor Corey & Val are hoping to make it out of Chinchilla as it is threatening to flood. On Xmas Eve we had to put out the cake & beef for Santa & we headed off to the park for the fireworks. Mick helps set them up which is a big job. It had been raining so it was nice that it stopped for the night. We had a good time as the whole town turns out for it. Maddy was very excited as she knew all about it this year. Xmas morning was a fun ... read more

Our plan of heading to Brett's cousin's on Wednesday for 4 nights over New Years had to be delayed a day because of the rains which had caused flooding and roads to close heading towards Goondiwindi where they live. Luckily it dried up a bit, and we were able to get there heading through Tenterfield the following day. It was a nice, scenic, although bumpy, drive from Byron, and when we opened up the caravan several times on the trip we would see more things that had jiggled loose, fallen off or broken. Not quite built for the bumpy roads and potholes! Nothing to major though, but just a bit of a clean up when we got there. The drive took us through Lismore and Casino, over the Great Dividing Range and Tenterfield, which is known ... read more

1st Oct to 8th Nov , Margaret & Bruce were out for the Birthday‘s as well & the Boy’s (Den & Bruce ) were kept busy moving shrubs & making a new garden & planting some trees . The Boy’s were not silly they loaded the dirt up in the wheel barrows, then got the tractor & drove them back to the house yard to save their backs. They had a bit of fun fishing & caught a few fish as Brigalow Creek at the back of Mick & Nicks was flooded & flowing. Maddy was not too keen on the worms that went on the hooks. We had a nice night out for tea for Nick’s Birthday . We woke to 3 more baby Guinea Pig’s this morning, Marg & Bruce went back to Bribe ... read more
