Today was a very strange day, we went our separate ways for a couple of hours and met up later in the afternoon for the Chinese New Year Celebration. We looked around the craft fair, markets etc and discovered Rob was born in the year of the Tiger and I was born the year of the Ox. What was more scary was how alike we are to the suggested traits! The Ox - Honest,Loyal, Popular, Sincere and Reliable AND Stubborn, Impatient, Sulking! The Tiger - Enthusiastic, Optimistic, Courageous, Energetic AND Impulsive, Restless, Stubborn! We watched the dancers (Silk Girl Ensemble, Lion Dancers) singers and the Tai Chi master. Then there was the dragon performance and the firecrackers! Rob also took the opportunity to take pictures of Cairns at night. 14/02/10 As we have been having such ... read more

Today we caught the free 8.20am shuttle bus back from Dougies in Port Douglas to Cairns. We got to the hostel and were told we were booked into separate dorms! - I don't think so! As it turned out our room would not be ready until 2pm. We decided to have a stroll to the Botanic Gardens (this turned into a 10 mile walk). Back to the hostel to check in before heading into town for food and a well earned rest! very chilled evening considering the heat. 11/02/10 Today we had a lie in and headed to Cairns Central for breakfast. I have been contemplating having my hair braided since our first visit to Cairns and so decided today would be the day. However, when i was still sat in the chair 4 and a ... read more

G'day mates, Well, we arrived in Cairns, Australia on February 3rd (after a luxurious air New Zealand flight!) and decided to explore the town of the Great Barrier Reef. It's a fairly big beach town with lots to see (including a very large colony of flying foxes! They're massive and hard to photograph!). We had a day of relaxation which we spent by the wonderful pool at our hostel. We then met up with Karen's friend Matt. We went out for a nice cheap dinner and then decided to try Goon. More on that later. Our Friday was spent on snorkling the Great Barrier Reef which was everything it is cracked up to be and more. We have a bunch of underwater camera pics but will have to get them developed at home and or when ... read more

Our flight to Cairns was fine - except it turned into a 3 hour flight (as Cairns is 1 hour behind Sydney) and the seats were cramped for Billy (not much space at all) We picked up our car without any problems - a lovely Toyota Corolla. We had decided to spend the day up in Port Douglas (as the weather wasn’t the greatest - and we were hoping it would improve) Port Douglas is about an hour drive (65km) north of Cairns - a lovely drive along the coastline with some beautiful beaches along the way. Port Douglas has a 4 mile beach lined with palm trees. Very picturesque and would be even better on a sunny day. They had cordoned off an area in the sea for swimmers - weighted nets to stop ‘stingers’ ... read more

Christmas with the folks in Australialand - Melbourne to Cairns After a few days of r ‘n’ r in KK, trying out the local night market for some bloody incredible squid, and a lime ping or two, I headed back to Singe-a-sweatypore. Catching up with a couple of the guys I trekked Mount Kinabalu with To compare notes on general all over muscle ache, the lack of leg function, food poisoning, and to check out Avatar 3D for some quality air con away from the sticky and unrelenting heat of the city streets. As well as to meet up with Mom again after her Rambo style escapades ended in Sabah. To celebrate we went to Raffles for Monkey nuts and the obligatory trademark Sling. Finally we boarded a plane to Melbourne, meeting Dad and Bruv so ... read more
