06 June 2009 - 05 February 2010 Well folks, after an 8-month jaunt from Thailand to Australia we finally come to the end of the road. Here we are now back in England, missing shorts, T-shirts and what the Aussie's call thongs. The time has gone fast and in that time we have a had an amazing time, from spending time in the jungle's of Northern Thailand to frolicking on the beautiful islands in the south, from the bustling metropolis of Kuala Lumpur (not twice, but three times!!) to the idyllic and lazy beaches of the Perhentian's, experiencing the so-called "Vomit Route" of the Trans-Sumatran Highway to the beauty of the open seas on a schooner and finally from the tropical north of Australia to a more milder (at times) climate in the south....it's been an ... read more

February 1st 2010

Well, a month spent in Australia and we only managed to see a tiny proportion of this wonderfully beautiful country. Sadly, as our last destination, money ran out and we had to hot foot it down the east coast. We made the most of it and enjoyed every minute of it! We spent a grueling total of 59 hours on buses here and traveled 3,635km's. In a month, that's quite a lot! Now for the rundown of places we've stayed, areas we've visited and what we loved (and hated) about Australia: Cairns: Best: The laid-backness of a large small town. Worst: Not having a beach to use Rating: 8/10 Airlie Beach: Best: Whitsunday Islands Worst: Way too many backpackers & Magnum's Backpacker Resort Rating: 3/10 Hervey Bay: Best: Fraser Island Worst: Not a huge amount of ... read more

31 January 2010 - 5 February 2010 TRANSPORT: Sydney to Melbourne by coach--13 hours Car rental for two days (Hertz)--A$199 ACCOMMODATION: Another long coach journey, another c**p meal.... well, leaving Sydney that morning we set off heading through some very scenic countryside. The one issue with Australian coach travel are the lunch and dinner stops. The lunch stop was a KFC (not the healthiest) and the second was a train station cafe in a small town called Aubury, a few hundred km's north of Melbourne. Firstly, it was here that we noticed a stark temperature and weather change. Sydney was cool and cloudy most of the time, but entering the state of Victoria, the mercury was fixed at 36C (at 6pm!), the countryside was stark dry, and the heat relentless. Secondly , dinner was terrible, with ... read more

23 January 2010 - 31 January 2010 TRANSPORT: Byron Bay to Sydney by bus--13 1/2 hours Sydney to Bondi Beach by taxi--A$20 - 30 City to Manly by ferry--A$13.80 return ACCOMMODATION: Funk House, King's Cross, Sydney 4-bed dorm, fan, shared bathroom, inc. breakfast--A$27 per person per night Really funky place right in the heart of King's Cross (A.K.A the Redlight District). However, it's really busy, and the cleaners just barge into your room unannouced. Noah's Backpckers, Bondi Beach Double, fan, shared bathroom, TV Another large place with really slow check in (it took 2 hours!) and it's not the most hygienic. The toilets are akin to public toilets you may find in an inner city!! Best to avoid this place! Westend Backpackers, Sydney Double, A/C, private bathroom--A$73 Pretty big place, but a decent option in the ... read more

22 January 2010 - 23 January 2010 TRANSPORT: Brisbane to Byron Bay by bus--3 hours ACCOMMODATION: Cape Byron Lodge Double, fan, shared bathroom--A$80 Nice friendly place just outside of town. Free shuttle bus, bicycles and body boards available! Byron Bay, sadly, was only a 24 hour stop over on our way between Brisbane and Sydney. We arrived at 11 am and set out straight for the gorgeous beach. However, it wasn't so perfect afterall, as there was a mas invasion of bluebottle jellyfish and just seeing the hordes of people running from the sea into the first-aid tent to douse themselves in vinegar was enough to put us off entering the sea. Dan plucked up the courage after a few hours during a "lull" in stings only to be mildly stung himself after 2 minutes in ... read more

18 January 2010 - 22 January 2010 TRANSPORT: Hervey Bay to Brisbane by bus--5 hours Brisbane to Beerwah (Australia Zoo) by train--A$21.20 return (1 1/2 hours) Brisbane to Surfers Paradise by train & bus--A$28.80 return (2 hours) ACCOMMODATION: Best Inn, Fortitude Valley Double, fan, TV, shared bathroom--A$50 An absolute bargain in a slightly drab area of the city. However, it is close to the train station, bars & restaurants and is the cheapest in Brisbane that we know of! We were lucky that on this leg of our journey the bus trip was only 5 hours in length (this is nothing compared to alot of the journeys!!!) So we set off at a sensible hour, hopped on our bus and was in Brisbane before we knew it! We had left booking our hostel till the day ... read more

16 January 2010 - 18 January 2010 TRANSPORT: Airlie Beach to Hervey Bay by bus (13hr 25m)--A$178 (we booked a Cairns - Melbourne hop on hop off pass for A$393) ACCOMMODATION: Woolshed Backpackers Double, fan, shared bathroom--A$50 Nice, small and friendly place, not far from town. Toilets are a bit of a trek from the cheapo double rooms. TOUR: Fraser Island one-day safari with Fraser Explorer--A$159 Recommended Extra's: A$70 for a short plane ride around Fraser Island! Recommended!! Leaving Airlie Beach at 8:30pm the previous night, we were in for a long one with a 13 hour plus bus journey. It went by with no drama's (we're not in Indonesia now!) but sleep wasn't easy. We arrived into Hervey Bay at 9:25am and set off to our hostel for a short nap. Hervey Bay isn't big ... read more

13 January 2010 - 15 January 2010 TRANSPORT: Cairns to Airlie Beach by bus (11hrs 5min)--A$130.85 (we booked a Cairns to Melbourne hop-on-hop-off pass for A$393) ACCOMMODATION: Magnum's Backpackers Double, A/C, fan, shared bathroom--A$54 Huge resort complete with nightclub, restaurant and tour agency. Very rowdy and full of backpackers. Staff are pretty rude and security is very tight. A great place to meet people, but if you want somewhere maybe a bit more personal and quiet go elsewhere...in fact, do go elsewhere! TOUR: Whitsunday Tour with Big Fury A$130 Great day trip to the Whitsundays on the fastest boat out there. Includes great snorkeling! Recommended! We set off from Cairns nice and early and said goodbye to the good folk at JJ's to catch the 9am Greyhound to Airlie Beach, some 622km south of Cairns. The ... read more

Wow! So after an epic 4 months in Indonesia it is time to (sadly) say goodbye. It's been by far the most rewarding, most arduous, most chaotic adventure we've had since we started our trip in June....and we didn't even get to see half of this huge country!! We spent a total of 50 hours on boats, 88 hours on buses, 18 1/2 hours on trains, 9 hours in the air and of course 6 hours on the back of a truck. That's with a total distance traveled of 5,832km!! Now for the rundown of places we've stayed, areas we've visited and what we loved (and hated) about Indonesia: Medan: Best: erm...the chaos? Worst: The dirtiness and the fact it has no attractions whatsoever Rating: 1/10 Bukit Lawang: Best: Orangutans Worst: Jungle bugs! Rating: 9/10 Tuk ... read more
