New member in the forum, been looking for info on Flores, I was "trapped" by your exciting story which, though written in a "documentary" way one could say, it was thrilling and couldn't stop reading it all the way on from Labuan Bajo to the end of the trip! Very precise and informative - thank you! I have a couple of questions, don't know if it's "proper" to ask them here or send a p.m. - if not, the admins please advise so and I won't do it again. So, we plan to visit the island next August and I'd like to know: 1) If someone does not use the public transport but hires a private car instead, do the same route from Labuan Bajo to Maumere, with intention to make stops at places of interest, how many days would he possibly need? For instance, stopovers at Bajawa and Moni would seem enough or, an extra night, say at Ruteng, would be needed? 2) Any ideas about how much the cost for hiring the car could be - per day? 3) From your on sight experience, the budget not being so much of an issue, are there any better places to stay overnight at the towns mentioned above? Thanks for any help and congratulations again for your excellent posts!

Betel Nut
Cool blog. I would love to go there. I think the "special powder" is ground up lime (the mineral not the fruit), it releases the drug in the betel nut.

Hi there
I just got back from Indonesia and missed a trip to Bandung. I am not much of a shopper and I do not think I would fancy a Geology Museum, but was Bandung worth the 3 hour train ride? Just curious how much i missed.... ;-)

Jakarta!
It's nice that Blok M and Pasaraya are still around! And it's a really different city when you go there as a tourist to see the sights, rather than when you live there as an expat. All the same it's good to know the bus system is working! I heard that when it was first implemented a lot of people didn't take it because it was malu. Any view of the monorail, on that note? ;) And I remember that McDonalds! It was huge! Please tell me you popped by Pondok Indah for old time's sake!

Hi guys well sorry Tioman was not so hot and I'd heard it was a good place to visit. Ref the ants well at least they're full of protein and Dan has always been an Oreo scoffer so maybe next time he'll look before he eats! Looking forward to meeting up in Jakarta. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Dan for the 10th. Love Dad

Try kapas
Hi, Came across your blog randomly. I have travelled many times as a backpacker to Malaysia and Thailand. I think you would like Palau Kapas - far better snorkelling than Perhentian (Perhentian used to be fantastic until they built the pier). Also, extremely chilled out with many beaches you can walk to that are completely deserted. I'd recommend KB Bungalows - about 50 RM a night and very cute bungalows right on the beach. Don't write off Thailand just because of a few party islands - Ko Lanta is lovely and so is Ko Kradan. Used to love Ko Lipe but it seems to be getting over-run now. If you end up going to kapas on this recommendation (seriously, I am a beach snob after travelling so much, and it is gorgeous) let me know what you think. Have fun!
