I was gutted to be awake at 7.30am after such a heavy night of drinking - I’d have been able to get back to sleep if I hadn’t needed to walk the long distance to the toilet block. As it was, the bright sunshine woke me up and by the time I got back to our cabin and saw Matt was still sleeping I took the opportunity to nip to the campshop to buy some breakfast. The guy on reception could tell I’d had a heavy night when I placed the large carton of orange juice on the counter. After some toast and coffee I was feeling more alive again although it took me quite some time to drag Matt out of bed. Mid morning we walked to the town square of the resort and browsed ... read more

I actually blogged to you all yesterday in the car as we were leaving Uluru but ran out of coverage and none of it was saved. Not happy. Day Five was a massive day in many ways, not the least of which was the Olgas themselves. We were not prepared for theses monumental rock structures and for the diversity of the nature contained there. We walked through 'The Valley of the Winds' (an appropriate title for one Joseph Stocker after baked beans), a 7.4 km walk that takes you over rock faces, between huge boulders, over stony paths, up rocky slopes and through desert/bush. The view from the top of the chasm was amazing, breathtaking. And negotiating the rocks down the other side was very interesting. We were unable to learn the stories of the Olgas ... read more

Today we went to the Olgas to do the 7.5 km Valley of the Winds walk. It was a great walk, one of the best so far. Every member of Team Nixon as we have been lovingly nicknamed has managed to walk a total of 25km in 2 days, YEY. The Olgas or Kata Tjuta is beautiful and just as awesome as Uluru. ... read more

Today I started my tour at Heavitree Gap, meeting up with the Connections crew there. Many of the people (about 1/2?) had started the tour in Sydney and gone up to Cairns, and were now doing the Centre. Everyone was very friendly! Lots of foreigners, mostly Germans and English--I was the only American! There are 20 'kids' and 2 'adults,' we've got a driver, named Geoff, and a cook, Allie, who are in charge of our tour. We drove out of Alice bright and early (the tour meet time was 7 AM, I caught a 6:30 AM taxi). We stopped at a camel farm, where I took a short (5 minute) camel ride and got to pet a tame dingo. On part of the ride, I got to sit shottie and talk to Geoff. We saw ... read more

Breakfast was a dark affair to start with as we arrived very early for the sunrise. After tucking into weetabix and an excellent cup of coffee the washing up had just begun as the sun started to rise. I watched the first part whilst drying plates and then having done our bit of the tidying we sat for a while just watching and waiting. It happens so gradually that before you actually know it is daylight. It is true that the rock changes colour through the sunrise and it was so peaceful as no other tours come for the sunrise. There was only us and another Mulgas tour there. It was a lovely start to the day if a little cold (thank goodness for Tims fleece). Having packed up we set off for the Olgas and ... read more

Kata Tjuta and Uluru walk 5:30 comes early but we don't feel too bad. The backpack gets loaded with fruit, granola bars and water that we picked up at the grocery store as well as the camera. We get picked up at 6:30 and head out towards Kata Tjuta. 25km into the trip we get to stop at a sunrise viewing area. We're treated to both Uluru and Kata Tjuta at sunrise. Pretty amazing again to see the colour change on Kata Tjuta and the sun creep over the desert to the right of Uluru. Continuing on to Kata Tjuta, we're told we've got roughly 3 hours to meet the van again. Another couple is in the same van so we just have to keep up with them. Trish and I strike out and hike to ... read more

Leaving Adelaide behind the 2 hour flight to Alice Springs went quickly chatting to Jake, a young man on his way to the Diamond mines an hour out of Alice Springs He reminded me a lot of Simon, my godson being tall, a sports fan and drummer with a wicked sense of humour and good company! Once at Alice Springs it was a short wait for my flight to Ayers Rock 50 minutes away Arriving at my hotel The Sails in the Desert it was a quick turn around to be collected by the Australian Pacific Touring Comapany Coach heading off to the Olgas (Kata Tjuta) These are an immense Rock formation which dominate the Western Skyline of Ulura-Kata Tjuta National Park This remarkable formation of 36 domes is thought to have once been a single ... read more

Well sunrise at this time of year is pretty early so was up at 4am frightened awake by the alarm call on the hotel phone! We drove to the sunrise spot infront of Uluru and enjoyed a very welcome cup of coffee as the first light strikes Uluru I think the photos speak for themselves as its difficult to convey the awesomeness of this place in words, it really is something to experience. From here and with the sun still rising we took a guided walk to Mutitjule waterhole and saw cave paintings and heard the legends of Kunija Tjukurpa (Python Dreaming) Then continuing on the Mala Walk to learn the story of the Mala (Hare Wallaby) people who once lived at Uluru We saw painted caves and learnt of the regions geology and flora.
