With the family catch-up done we packed our bags and loaded the car to head back towards the coast via Grafton. Our Godson, Lachlan, took a job in Coffs Harbour about six months ago so moved up to the NSW north coast for his work. Since we were (relatively) nearby we wanted to catch up with him before heading back to Melbourne. Just before Christmas he moved into a place of his own, so he very generously invited us to stay with him. The plan was to meet him in Coffs Harbour for lunch and then go back to his place, but this morning Lachie suggested that we meet in Sawtell since he knows we like it so much. We were happy to meet in Sawtell and miss the business of Coffs. Although he has been ... read more

We had planned to meet up with Becky in Grafton, so we therefore stayed a bit longer here, and fixed some stuff online, however, something got in her way, and she could therefore not join us. This was a shame, though we ended up having an amazing time nevertheless. From Grafton we headed on inland, driving in the direction of Glen Innes. Our first stop on the route was Washpool NP(national park), where we arrived just in time for still having daylight for cooking. This is for us something rather rare, however it is very nice when we get to cook with light. Christian tried lighting a bun fire, whilst Louise cooked, however it was too wet, and we therefore retreated to the car for shelter and warmth. The firewood was provided for free, which we ... read more

After messing about in 1770 for a couple of days we headed south to Hervey Bay, the gateway to Fraser Island - we thought about going back there for the day, but they wanted $165 each for a day trip so we decided to give it a miss. Very expensive here. We had a pizza at the local pub whilst watching England lose at Rugby League - and it cost $43 plus another $14 for two beers! (about £34) The weather turned very changeable - lots of rain, and intermittent sunshine. Our next port of call was Maroochydore on the Sunshine coast and a wonderful campsite right on the beach called Cotton Tree. It was fab. We stayed an extra night so we could go into the RSL club and watch the Melbourne Cup - the ... read more

We decided to have another casual day on Saturday so went for the usual walk first thing - this time we went down from the boardwalk onto the beach from where a few guys were surfing and others were sea fishing. It wasn’t a safe swimming beach as the waves were quite rough so I contented myself with a paddle but still got quite wet! What a pleasure it was to be able to get up and wander along an almost deserted beach. We chatted for some time to our latest neighbours, Sean and his wife Michelle. Fifty or so years ago Sean came to Australia from Dublin via New Zealand. Graham happened to mention what a nuisance the sand flies were and soon afterwards Sean produced a bottle of homemade mixture of citronella, baby oil ... read more

We had enjoyed our stay in Armidale but today we were completing the journey along ‘The Waterfall Way’. This road is supposedly the third most scenic road in all of Australia. We had met a lady at Wollomombi Falls who said that the only two roads more magnificent were the Great Ocean Road in Victoria and the road between Cairns and Port Douglas in Queensland. Having travelled along both those roads we looked forward to judging her comment. Our latest camping neighbour, who lived near Coffs Harbour, was in Armidale that week conducting ‘sleep seminars’. He said it would take quite a long time to get to the coast even though it was only about 100 kms away and he was right. We made good time to start with but then the road started to climb ... read more
