One plane away… So 2016 ended and 2017 began. Was a strange one for me as I had to say goodbye to my Australian friends in Sydney. Through no choice of my own, but the legalities of a visa (it was about to expire) - it was time to move on. It seems such a big deal and a big process but the reality hits pretty quickly when you board a plane and exit a plane and that is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. In the space of eight hours I had left Australia behind and was embarking on the next step. Travel is a wonderful thing but it also tears you away from, and pulls you into new things all the time! I was super sad to be leaving Australia ... read more

Shine on you crazy diamond...tripping the light fantastic. The lights dimmed and clouds of trippy notes rolled towards us...ever so soft...ever so far away...tendrils of sweet sound heading our way. A guy with a guitar strolls onto the stage...hair over his eye ...twang...that single riff trickling down my spine. Another to a keyboard...finger reaching for a single riff...another to the drums...gently brushing the skins as he sits down. One by one the stage fills...each reaching for just one riff one after the other...the clouds rolling closer...melody inviting rain to come. Do de de dar...Do de de dar...Do de de dar...Do de de dar...our senses alive and inviting...the band stirring ever so slightly...sweet notes sweeping me away. Into orbit...remember when you were young...you shone like the sun...shine on you crazy diamond...and shine. ... read more

I am now in Cairns, which is about a 3 hour flight north of Sydney. After the roommate debacle the first night in Sydney, I was excited as the second room seemed much calmer. To keep a long story short, I had a young girl from West Virginia in my room who woke up with a start, with no pants on (zero anything actually) stumbled down from the bunk above me and vomited in the shower. She then stumbled back in rambling about needing to find her way to Perth. Mo yelled at her for being rude when her phone went off which opened Pandora's box. She was screaming at him for up to an hour. He left to get the front desk person and I talked her down. I also talked her out of breaking ... read more

Made it to Sydney! Man, that was a lot of travel. I felt very sick on the plane. I'm not sure if it was altitude sickness and if that's possible on planes, but I felt better as soon as we landed. I know I was also dehydrated and very tired, so perhaps it was a combination of things. Once I landed in Australia, I went through customs and they didn't stamp my passport which I thought was super lame. The exchange station told be it was 50 dollars to exchange my money. I asked him why I wouldn't just go to an ATM then and pay a $2.50 charge. I think he was surprised by that. He laughed and said he didn't know. I told him no thanks and I'd find an ATM. $50, seriously??? I ... read more

Geo: -33.8671, 151.207We were sad to leave our beautiful daughter in Nelson Bay and head off south to Sydney. It took us about 2 1/2 hours to get to our hotel. Would have been slightly earlier but the sat nav on my phone is not as good as it could be. Great apartment at 5 York Street on the 23rd floor with balconies overlooking Sydney. Once settled in we decided to return our hire car but as we hadn't been given the proper drop off address by Thrifty this took us quite a while. Please note anyone returning a car - it is in the ground floor of the Domain car park and it is not at all sign posted!Walked back ,stopping at Hyde Park for a beer- we were just too late for lunch there ... read more

Jousting is brutal...who said medieval was faire? The first taste was a bald guy dressed as a monk in a brown habit with a big silver cross hanging on his chest. Not sure whether it was the sunglasses or the walkie-talkie over his left breast that attracted my attention. But when he raised his mobile phone I knew I was on a good thing. And he was only the parking attendant! I showed my ticket to a peasant girl then a jester on a unicycle crossed my path. A grey bearded man in leather pants and Norse jerkin on a small ladder adjusting a noose...climbing down as I approach. "Please climb back up the ladder again," I plead. "Who are you to tell me what to do?" he retorts..."Hangings are not 'til 1:30pm." The hangman nearby ... read more

My Aussie Backyard...Fungi of the Third Kingdom. Is a fish an animal? What about a spider? Do you know? It seems fish are animals...just like birds...and other things that slither, climb and crawl...spiders, lizards, snakes and insects...animals all they say. Then there are the rocks and the trees. That means I've got animal, vegetable and mineral in my Aussie backyard. Flora, fauna and rocks. Flora means plant life and fauna means animal life...and rocks mean rocks. But sometimes (usually after rain) something sticks it's head out of my Aussie backyard and says "Notice me"...and I didn't really hear it until I heard that fungi are NOT plants. And that really blew my mind. All living things that are not plant or animal are called "biota"...fungi, bacteria and some slimy things that are neither. Welcome to the ... read more

The observant among you will notice that the photos are not of iconic New Zealand landmarks! We are now both well, but had both been ill on the flight so ended up with an unexpected stop in Sydney to recover. A HUGE thank you to Joanne Cowdery (travel counsellors.co.uk/Joanne.Cowdery) who has been amazing at re organising flights and doing battle with airlines on our behalf! After some much needed sleep and rehyduration we managed a trip to Sydney Harbour for a few hours yesterday (30th). It was amazing to see the Harbour Bridge and Opera House ... landmarks we never thought we would see! So we are currently sat in the Departures lounge at Sydney airport for our rearranged flight to Christchurch. Hoping to have a few hours seeing Christchurch later today, we were last there ... read more

My Aussie Backyard...the Rocks & the Trees. It kinda begs the question...why the rocks & the trees? We love the birds that sing and the animalia that slither, climb and crawl. But what images are our deepest emotional attachment to Australia as our home? It's the rocks & trees that remind us of home when we are away...that welcome us when we return from our travels...the sap of our life blood...trunks that give us strength...evergreen branches that open like arms...that catch the wind...that perfumes the air...that shades and comfort us...that provides the oxygen we breathe. While the flora & fauna change around them...the rocks are our constant...always there. What reminds me of the magical places in this World we have visited? It is the landscapes...the vistas...the people...the animal and birds...the colours...and definitely the rocks & trees. ... read more
