As important as first impressions are, Sydney certainly knows how to make a good one. We arrived on Australia day and went to celebrate that at the Circular Quay. It was packed with people, there was live music from several artists, and oh.. those fireworks. I've seen firework shows before, but try to beat a firework show where jet skies are racing around the water firing off fireworks with the Sydney opera House on the background and reflections of the fireworks on the water. It was magical. After planning our next adventure (think rainforests, scuba diving and more!), we went to the Home bar: a multi-level nightclub with house, R&B and hiphop in separate rooms. The hostel had arranged a bus to the Home bar and we met a lot of nice people: I really enjoyed ... read more

In Dorothy's adventures up the yellow brick road, OZ is a fantasy land, of course! And as we headed out of the hotel on our first morning in Australia, it all seemed like a 'fantasy', to us. We were off to see the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House today, two iconic landmarks that we've all seen many times on film and TV, but this time we were going to see them for real! We couldn't quite believe it! But, if we were in a dream world, we were soon woken up with a bang.......by the nightmare that is.......Sydney traffic!! Our first stop today was Sydney Harbour Bridge; not just to see it, I hasten to add.......but to climb it! Yep, you heard me correctly, these four intrepid old timers, were going to scale this ... read more

Having celebrated Christmas early with the community in Melbourne, my celebration on Dec 25, with my brother Greg, was with our friends Sandra and Keith and members of their family. Normally, after Xmas in Sydney, I drive to Shellharbour for the annual holiday at the beach. This year was different due to the early start of the Sabbatical program. This year, both before and after Xmas, I caught up with Sydney friends and got to know the local train system. Pictured in this blog post are Xmas gift-giving and catch-ups with various friends, among them Moira, Trish and Pauline. There was also Rosemary but, unfortunately, I forgot to get a snap.... read more

Our home for the last week of our Australian adventure was the southeast state of New South Wales. We spent a couple of days in the beautiful coastal town of Byron Bay; taking to the waves once more to further sharpen our surfing skills - at this rate we will be performing rescues when we arrive in Bondi Beach! Next up was the sleepy town of Port Macquarie. It boasts several stunning beaches, each as impressive as the other, with a beautiful coastal walk linking them. There was a very large surf the day we visited so the water was once again a no go. Having met hundreds of kangaroos since landing into Australia, we were keen to catch a glimpse of Australia's other indigenous animal - the koala. These guys are incredibly difficult to spot ... read more

Got up nice and early and drove 3km to Sydney airport. Handed the car back and booked in. Once again we were overweight, despite having paid for an extra bag. Another $70 fine and I buy another bag for our flight to New Zealand for $55 but that means we have to buy another bloody bag. How kids go away for a year with just a Bergan and a daypack?.? Arrive into Cairns and upgrade to a Subaru Forrester. Drive to Chantal and Andrews Airbnb in Mossman (sugar cane country). Another spacious place which allows us to spread out. This place only has a bbq so we went over to woollies to get some stuff for a bbq, before dinner we did our laundry and had a pint in the pub. After dinner of kangaroo burgers ... read more

Another morning run which sees us over 3000 meps. Down to the beach fo a swim and yes I went in. Lol. After a shower we went over the top of the hill for lunch. Went to a photo art gallery and saw a great idea of a print that was a speaker. Back to pack and drive to Sydney to the ibis hotel. Not bad but feels like a ships cabin. KFC for dinner and watch the funny birds then bed for a 0430 wake up!... read more

We landed at Kingsford Smith Airport Sydney at around 6.00pm, and arrived home around 9.30pm. It was good to walk in the front door after such an epic holiday. When we arrived home, the grandkids were in bed asleep, so we went outside to say hello to our little pup Ellie. Ellie had doubled in size and was beside herself with excitement at having us home after two months, so much so, that she disgraced herself all over the patio. The next day we chilled out the back with Ellie and the grandkids, and commenced the drudgery of washing all of our clothing. Welcome back to the real world.... read more

Mosman June 2017 For me it was a very short stay in Mosman. Tomas got there a week earlier than me but I finished the house sit in Toorak Gardens, in Adelaide and then started the following house sit in Oyster Bay while he remained in Mosman. It worked out tidily for us in the fact that we could seamlessly move from one to the other, without any gaps. We have got to know Boomer and Lyla, the 2 posh poodles well now, as well as their parents Robert and Barbara as this was our third time house sitting for them. They were our first house sit through the Aussie House sitters website and we feel they took a huge gamble on appointing us when we were still living in New Zealand and had few references ... read more

Well this will be my account of our Holiday that Gretta and I have planned as a celebration for not having having to pay anymore School fees. We have been able to put our 2 boys through the Kings School. We decided that we would take a holiday for ourselves seeing as we have sent both of the boys to Europe with School for History Tours. We started planning this way back in July and came up with a rough itinerary that would tick off a few places for both of us. In total we will be abroad for about 5 weeks, which is a long time but at the same time such a short trip as we've had to limit where we go. The rough outline was to fly direct to London for a few ... read more
