Well, thank Buddha I didn’t go straight ahead and give Dario my number! I’m not one to be embarrassed easily, but considering that he has a girlfriend that could actually have been a bit uncomfortable, even for me. He is the second guy who has been flirting shamelessly with me despite being in a relationship. Remind me to never marry a construction worker, as this profession is the common denominator for these two hunky bastards. When Dario came in on Friday he greeted me with a “Ciao bella” which I thought was promising, and while I prepared his sandwich I casually asked him if he had a girlfriend, fully expecting a solid ‘no’. Because of the very tall and thick language barrier between me and this fair Italian, Dario had colossal difficulties understanding my simple query, ... read more

In one week I bought both a heater and a jacket; winter has now inarguably hit Sydney. The days are still warm and sunny, but mornings and nights are getting quite nippy, and although I was hoping to not have to cave in to electronically driven heating, it's nice to not have to shiver when in your own room. Work is still great, and the praise just keeps on coming. Kit claims it would be a complete waste of talent if I didn’t open my own coffee shop in the future, but I replied that I love what I'm doing purely because I’m not the one in charge, because I don’t have to worry about every purchase, over-head costs and so on. I think it’s true. Empirically speaking, I know I wouldn’t enjoy being responsible for ... read more

One more week until the departure is upon me, and there is SO much to do. Just had a call from Aunty Wendy and started to get very excited about my visit to Norway. Last night the girls and I decided to "get out of the Suzza" and headed out to Balmain. We figured this could be a good opportunity for me to give my travel skills a work out before the real deal. Hey, a girl's gotta start somewhere Kick off at the Trinity corner, where we took a cab to Balmain. First watering hole was the London (where else), but after one drink we were all over the Thomas Tank Engine experience (way too much shunting) and walked up to Monkey Bar. The Monkey Bar is quite an interesting place. As you walk in, ... read more

It’s been absolutely maddeningly busy at the coffee shop since Kit decided against hiring a replacement for the much needed forth employee who took off last week. Now it’s just me and my boys, Kit and Ming, and although I can see how attractive it must be for Kit to save the money by not hiring another person, it sure does make it stressful at times. But, in all honesty, I enjoy the challenge of juggling numerous things at once. The day flies by real fast when you’re a little understaffed the whole time, when there’s always something more to do that you never quite get to. Daver, my guide of culture and cultivation, took me along on some more events this week. On Tuesday we saw “Fantastic Parasuicides” which consisted of three Korean short comedies ... read more

These past few weeks have brought some very good stuff, some pretty bad stuff, and some really good news with it. At the end of the first week I was tired, worn out and sick. The dubious diet of veggies and fruit that I had put myself on was no hit, although my weight did stoop as anticipated. Unfortunately, so did my health and my energy level, and I guess in the end I’d rather be a happy chubster than a svelte sicko. I spent the 3-day weekend in my room, playing new electronica from Dave while drinking tea and reading “Self-Loathing for Beginners”, a book that frequently triggered a sickly chuckle from my sore throat, sending the mucus up and down in a ticklish way. Every laughter ended with me leaning over the bed, coughing ... read more

Got to Sydney last Wednesday after a long journey. We flew from Osaka, which has a airport out in the middle of the ocean. Thank god we took off as I didn't want to end up in the sea. The airport shakes as you sit waiting for your plane. The air hostess wear the most beautiful traditional uniforms. The flight was full from Japan to Singapore, which took a little over 6 hours. We flew over the Philippines which made the flight a bit bumpy as they had tropical storms at the time. When we arrived in Singapore we had an hour or so to wait for our connecting flight. We flew to Australia in a Boeing 747. It was practically empty. There was only about 150 people on the plane at most, which meant we ... read more

Overall I ended up spending 3 weeks in Sydney which have been great. It has all been about chilling out and making a long U-turn back to the shores of little Britain. First thing I noticed was that I could add Australian dollar notes to the list, alongside cockroaches, of the only things that would not be destroyed in the event of a nuclear bomb. In gives some perspective as to how seriously the Aussies take their outdoor life, and particularly surfing, when they can persuade the national mint to make waterproof currency which is impossible to tear. I spent the first week (prior to Mel's wedding) familiarising myself with the city and making daily use of the outdoor swimming pool in the Botanic gardens. Suddenly the Olympic distance traithlon I was coerced into a agreeing ... read more

In Sweden we have an expression that could roughly be translated to the following: “You don’t have more fun than you make for yourself.” I believe this is very true, and I do my best to stay amused through every part of my day. Sometimes you need a bit of creativity and guts to create a fun situation, other times it is handed to you on a silver platter, and you need only appreciate it. So far, my effort is paying off and I find life to be a highly entertaining journey, no doubt thanks to the fact that I myself have a starring role in this production. After all, I’m heaps of fun, and to get to be in my own company all the time means I’m having a perpetual blast. But I’m not a ... read more

With a month and a half to go until I fly out, I am most relieved to have everything booked for the trip..... well, almost everything. The ferry's in Scandinavia were beyond my travel agent's abilities to book. Essentially I took that to mean "we don't get any commission on that". I'll book them myself. On my first trip to Europe, I took advice to not lock down my plans too much as I will want flexibility once I'm over there. Considering the extra stress involved, I decided I was going to have everything planned out this time. It may not be as spontaneous, but dammit, I'm paying good money to enjoy myself. Some people have asked about my itinerary. I need to look up some information on some of the tours, but here's what I ... read more
