During our time back in Sydney we were graced with some beautiful weather (remembering it’s their Autumn), with clear skies that gave us warm sunny days and chilly evenings. We began to plan our US trip over casual breakfasts and more familiar dinners than we've been used to over the last 12 weeks, and quickly realised that internet time would be very expensive across America, so we’ve bought ourselves a small laptop that will more than pay for itself in time. After travelling through Asia without a problem, and here for 9 weeks previously without a hitch, the cash machines in Oz have now decided they don’t want to give us any money, which proved to be a little inconvenient. We were thankfully helped out by Carrie, who we’ve met up with a few times whilst ... read more

Thursday 27th March - JB net us at the airport at 1930. Got a train to Kings Cross area and walked through the stripclub lined street to Potts Point where JB's flat is. Great 5th floor apartment he shares with Gav and Martin. JB, Gems and I went out for a german meal at 'Maggies' in Kings Cross - had an awesome pork knuckle. JB then took us down to the harbourside to look at the amazing views of the city by night. Slept in JB's double bed whilst he was on the floor! Fri 28th - JB to work early. Gems and I sauntered down to the Botanical Gardens in the sunshine. Really nice gardens but they have a serious bat problem! You see hundreds of them hanging in the trees, which they damage. Lots ... read more

Scheduled overnight train journey to Sydney takes 11 hours, typically it took 12 hours. Arrived at Central Train Station at 8 in the morning with no accommodation booked, although we did have a few places in mind. Ended up picking the Ambassador Hostel at Kings Cross 'cos they offered to come and pick us up. True to form, had to change accommodation after one night when we were awakened by the deafening sound of a workies hammer tool vibrating through the walls. The inside of the building next door is being demolished!!! anyway the hostel is a bit grubby and too expensive at 80 AU$ a night. Found a place nearby at Potts Point called the Macleay Lodge for 70 AU$ per night, reduced to 50 if you stay for a week. Fine by us!!!!!! Like ... read more

Sorry, it's been a fair while since our last entry. That would indicate that we have done so much and not had time to even think about the blog, but sadly, it's the opposite. As mentioned in a previous blog, Emma had managed to have a job to start on the 3rd of January whereas my recruitment agencies had told me there wasn't much available but would contact me in the New Year. Unsurprisingly, they never did, with my attempts to contact them getting nowhere. Since the New Year, Emma has started her new job and is quite enjoying it. As soon as she started, I began to seek out jobs with little emphasis on the type of work, but merely just to get work itself, so I'm not being fussy. Over the few weeks, I've ... read more

It's summertime Christmas in the land Down Under, and that means Beaches, Sun, and dinner from a microwave? :) I rented an "apartment" for the holiday week in Sydney, because I knew me and the boys were going to want to make a real meal and celebrate traditionally! Except when I checked in, the kitchen was basically a micro (that was also an oven?) and a small portable two burner deck that I could precariously balance over the sink (boiling water was dangerous!) I got into town on Chrismas Eve, so shopping was crazy, and I was grocery shopping, gift shopping for the boys, and shopping for any last minute decorations to try and spruce up the place! All at the grocery store! I pulled it all together and we had a very festive backdrop for ... read more

Xmas was always going to be a hard week and one that we hadnt been looking forward too....mainly because its the time of year to spend with the family and not millions of miles away from home! Well you have to make the best of a bad situation.....and the heat.....the improving weather and all the BBQ's have certainly helped us forget what were missing out on!! Xmas Day was forecast to be overcast.....and so our chances of being down the beach werent looking that great. We decided to have a tradional xmas dinner and go down the beach if the weather improved......and after a few too many lunchtime beers i stumbled home with a massive turkey!! Xmas morning began with champagne and bacon.....such a classy combo.... whilst the turkey was cooking in our 1 shelved oven ... read more

Before the extravaganza of Christmas, Emma's birthday is nicely nestled on the 20th, which caused me a headache in terms of gift choices. Although we'd obviously agreed presents would take a back seat this year, it felt appropriate to still give things with some degree of thought. As a result, I found myself rushing about in the days leading up looking for something suitable, which ultimately turned out to be extremely thoughtful DVDs (everybody loves a DVD!!) and some perfume/skin/nails stuff. I hope she liked it as much as she said she did anyway. Unfortunately, the day itself wasn't the most ideal as we both had interviews with job agencies for some proper work. After 4 months off, it felt really weird wearing a shirt and tie and having to churn out the usual "sell yourself" ... read more

Hi again everyone, we thought it would be a good idea to give you all an update on how things are going here in Sydney and to let you know how the first few months have gone. So here we go. The first couple of weeks were actually quite stressful - the combination of no money, no jobs, no home, no friends, no family and no idea where anything was all proved to be quite a potent mix. We had arrived on the overnight coach from Brisbane and had immediately checked into a hostel near Central Station and had a quick cat-nap. The first couple of days followed a pattern - basically having to run lots of errands - the list of things to do seemed to be endless. Everything felt very strange in these first ... read more
