One plane away… So 2016 ended and 2017 began. Was a strange one for me as I had to say goodbye to my Australian friends in Sydney. Through no choice of my own, but the legalities of a visa (it was about to expire) - it was time to move on. It seems such a big deal and a big process but the reality hits pretty quickly when you board a plane and exit a plane and that is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. In the space of eight hours I had left Australia behind and was embarking on the next step. Travel is a wonderful thing but it also tears you away from, and pulls you into new things all the time! I was super sad to be leaving Australia ... read more

Moving Countries... Going on holiday is one thing - packing your bags, having an adventure and returning home to the people you love and the life that you know. Going travelling is another - perhaps quitting your job and packing your life into a backpack for a wonderful adrenaline-fuelled trip around the world, before winding up back with those home comforts again. Moving countries is little different. There is a bigger gamble, a bigger uncertainty and a bigger risk. That said, there could also be a bigger gain! Moving countries - Yes you still have to pack your life into a bag, but this time you can’t leave any of it behind for safekeeping. Yes you have to quit your job, but then you have to find another one, in another country. Ultimately, you don’t know ... read more

We were returning to Sydney to recommence our travels on mainland Australia. We had a Jetstar flight, which left Hobart at 12.50 pm and arrived in Sydney at 2.45 pm. Who knows how long that flight was, with any time differences; going backwards and forwards in time was just too confusing. Our flight path took us into Sydney over the top of the Opera House, which still looked yellow, and the bridge, which still looked grey. When we had first arrived in Sydney a month previously we had been amazed at how small the airport was for such a major transport hub. Well, I don't know which terminal we came in on then but this time round it was as though we were in a completely different airport! It was much bigger, more what you would ... read more

It was a very soggy week, and Sydney was not at her finest. Typical - out of town guests and it rains. And rains, and rains! My mother and sister, Susannah, arrived in Sydney on the first day of rain that we'd had in ages. It was my sister's first visit to Sydney, so I was keen to show her all the highlights. I wanted to show off Sydney's beauty, but uncharacteristically the city wouldn't cooperate. They arrived on a wet and soggy Saturday morning, and luckily after such an early start they wanted a low key day, so the rain wasn't a major deterrent. Armed with umbrellas, we went on a neighbourhood walk through Darlinghurst, up to Oxford Street, through Paddington then back to Potts Point, stopping in a few shops and cafes on the ... read more

Exactly one year ago today, having bundled up nearly all my belongings into storage, I joined more than half a million other New Zealanders in the so-called "lucky country". I can't believe how quickly it's gone. I didn't know what the future would hold, with a work contract for one year, so I set myself a goal to see as much as I could in my year. I've visited every State and Territory, including a visit to the Federal Parliament where I found out what the difference between the two is. I've seen a lot, but only starting to discover what a vast, diverse, wild and beautiful country it is. Australia is nothing if not a land of contrasts. The beaches are simply stunning, amongst the most beautiful I've seen anywhere. Whether downtown Sydney, or more ... read more

Living in Sydney is not so different to living in New Zealand. Sometimes it feels like I've just moved to a much bigger city with better weather down the road. The cultures are very similar and we speak the same language...most of the time. But then again there are some key cultural and language differences which can trip you up. Firstly the rugby. Where I'm from, if you say you are watching rugby, then you are watching rugby union. If you want to watch rugby league then you say you are watching the league. Here though when you mention you watched the rugby in the weekend, it could be rugby, league or AFL (what I know of as Aussie Rules). And sadly, it's not very likely to be actual rugby. True rugby fans seem quite thin ... read more

Sydney is a truly gorgeous city and I never tire of the stunning views I am lucky enough to see every day. Generally speaking I don't have the opportunity to travel much beyond a thirty minute walk of the city centre, however whenever I get the chance to venture further afield I leap at it.... And leap I did when offered the chance to spend a day on the harbour with my parents when they visited recently. A friend of theirs who was visiting as well, invited us out for a day on the boat and a picnic lunch. Her daughter and son-in-law have a beautiful motor launch, with a captain, so it was easy to say yes! The weather was more than kind, and we had a wonderful day getting to see the sights from ... read more

Two months in Sydney and it's gone in a flash. When I first moved here I thought I would be able to update this blog with all sorts of interesting adventures, however in reality all I can boast of is having found somewhere to live, organised some furniture, and gone to work. A lot. However I have no complaints at all, and I am making new discoveries every day. I have a gorgeous apartment in Potts Point, with an incredible view over the city. I look over the Woolloomooloo wharf, over to the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. This view was the real drawcard for the apartment, and admiring the view with a glass of wine at the end of the day is a very good way to make your cares melt away. Potts ... read more

Yay! I'm finally in Sydney! I flew out last night from Bali at 11pm after having my last supper with Kim (an English girl who I met on the plane) and hoped I would fall alseep. Of course, I hoped too much and maybe caught 30min-1 hour of sleep out of the 5.5 hours it took to fly. When I landed, I couldn't find my luggage. I spent an hour looking and hoping my luggage would turn up, but nothing. The guys who worked at the airport were so nice and helpful and there it was: my backpack on a different carousel! I was relieved. So, I then took the train to get to my hotel. $16 AUSD. EEK! I was so used to getting $2 taxi rides from Thailand/Cambodia that I began to realize this ... read more

Hi all, We've had a brilliant (if very busy) time in Sydney over the past couple of days - we definitely feel as if we did everything it was possible to do in four short days! We arrived late on Thursday night and headed straight over to see a view of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House - iconic images which really made us think 'bloody hell we're actually in Australia!'. First thing Friday morning we headed back to see what they looked like in daylight, and felt the same pang of disbelief! We walked around to the Opera House and then to The Rocks area, which is where the explorers originally docked, and is a really pretty area with a few boutiques and 'the oldest pub in Sydney'. We couldn't get enough of the ... read more
