Après une longue et bonne nuit, on se réveille tout fringuant. Il n’est même pas 6h et Nico est sur le PC et m’apprend que nous avons changé de Président. Après la toilette et le petit déj’ on part marcher dans Newcastle pour voir les points d’intérêts et il y en a ! La Queen Wharf Tower, qui domine une partie de la ville, est notre 1er stop, 180 marches à monter. On enchaîne ensuite par la cathédrale anglicane, très belle de l’extérieur, puis l’obélisque, quelconque. On descend au bord de mer voir la plus ancienne « rock pool » d’Australie, construite par des bagnards. I had heard Newcastle mentioned a lot and was vaguely aware that it was a city north of Sydney, but that sums up all my previous knowledge of it. I was intrigued to see what it was actually like and it was only when I started reading about its history that I learnt that Newcastle had had Australia’s most destructive recorded earthquake in 1989. However, the city took that opportunity to rebrand itself. This former steel town (where the worst-behaved convicts were sent!) is the largest coal export harbour in the world. It certainly has a very industrial feel to it and the coal industry is very evident (in fact, yesterday’s newspaper stated that the coal boom is causing traffic jams) but the various rejuvenation projects have paid off.The city has flair and an up and ... read more

... dieser Ansicht sind die Aussies wohl nicht. Heute findet in Hamilton das Music and Food Festival statt. (http://www.facebook.com/hamiltonmusicandfoodfestival?sk=info) Dafür ist die gesamte Beaumont St den ganzen Tag gesperrt und zur großen Einkaufs-, Spazier- und Funmeile umfunktioniert worden. Von exotischen Trommelrhythmen, Bauchtänzern, Straßensängern, Geigern und Rockbands über Clowns, Akrobaten, Hüpfburgen und Tanzgruppen bis hin zu Essen und Trinken aus aller Welt und vielen Kleidungs- und Accessoireständen ist hier alles vertreten. Ganz Hamilton riecht nach einer Mischung aus gebratenen Hühnerspießen und gebrannten Mandeln (ja, die gibts hier auch..) und klingt nach einer bunten Mischung aus kreischenden Tropenvögeln, lachenden Kindern und lauter Blasmusikkapelle mit ebenso lauten Trommelschlägen. 1. Es ist Sommer... Und ich bin wirklich noch sehr fasziniert von der vielen Sonne, dem vielen Grün und den unzähligen Vögeln 2. ... die übrigens am liebsten auf der Straße rumhopsen und die lustigsten Geräusche machen 3. Es gibt die lustigsten kleinen Läden hier, die alles mögliche verkaufen. Großketten finden sich außer Aldi und IGA gar keine, aber wenn man ein bissl durch die Läden schaut findet man auch ganz gute Angebote, dann muss man nicht das teure Zeug kaufen.. (eine Mango zb kostet bei IGA $ 4,80.....obwohl sie aus Australien ist..) 4. Generell verkaufen die verschiedenen Läden ganz andere Dinge als bei uns: 5. ...Toilettartikel wie Shampoo und Duschgel kauft man beispielsweise entweder im Supermarkt oder typischerweise in pharmacies (nicht wie erwartet in drug-stores... sowas gibt es hier gar nicht) 6. ...Medikamente bekommt man ... read more

Hi all! We arrived at Newcastle (one of the oldest cities in Australia) late morning and found our hostel. It was a very grand building and reminded us of Harry Potter. We had a look around the hostel and then took the free shuttle bus to the shop to get some food. The weather was very wet that afternoon; luckily we had a dvd player in our room so watched 'The Hangover'. That evening the weather brightened up and we had read about carols in the park, which was next to our hostel, so we headed out to get in the Christmassy mood.
