It was time to leave the Sunshine State and return to our native state of NSW. As we crossed the border at Coolangatta, no more manual adjusting of the clocks, no more fading of the curtains, the mobile phones and car GPS altered the time automatically, losing an hour in the process. Visiting Ballina was an opportunity to catch up with our former neighbours at Kariong, Kim and Kayleen Bourke, who now reside there. Kim and Kayleen were great friends and mentors for us, being a young couple living a long distance away from our families, with our kids growing up together and attending the same preschool and school. We spent a great day catching up with them, the day passing all too quick, recalling memories, events and getting updates on other former Kariong residents that ... read more

,As the result of a dramatic loss at Scissors/Paper/Rock I woke up on the bottom bunk in the kitchen at the Woolgoolga Holiday Park. Adam was actually awake so we were able to have a quick fish before departing. Like everything on the north coast Woolgoolga is a beautiful seaside town with a long beach to the north which we checked out. We decided it was a bit messy for fishing off the beach so opted for the lagoon. Plenty of small whiting but too small to really hook. We had a bit of fun feeding them. Checked out the Anzac Day ceremony at the Diggers Club with a rendition of the national anthem which only compared favourably with Roseanne’s rendition of the US anthem at the Super Bowl. It did seem that most of the ... read more

Day 4. I am back in familiar and familial territory this morning as I awake in sunny Ballina at my brothers’ home, having spent the night there. I managed to offload my partner in crime at Wardell which is 15km south of the home of the Big Prawn. He spent the night with a family member there. We reconvened at a café in the main street this morning. It was clear from the outset that I would be driving as it appears that last night Chris had met all the locals at the Wardell Recreational Club over a beer or two. He seemed to have been very taken with a big hairy sugarcane farmer called Jim. At this stage I am beginning to think my night wasn’t that bad after all, sitting around a radio listening ... read more

We had a few things to do and Ballina seemed to have all the answers so we stayed an extra day. We did some food shopping, organised some bike repairs and looked for clothes (but without luck). Lunch at the local restaurant was disappointing as our meals were far too salty. Seems to be a more common theme lately. Our caravan park was close to the beach so we walked along the river and out to the breakwater to watch the surfers tackle the waves. The caravan park also had lots of facilities to keep the campers amused (including putt putt golf). A tournament was quickly organised, with Lenny taking the gross score but Georgi winning the nett score and trophy. The handicapper took notice of how well Georgi played.... read more

We drove over the river (into NSW) looking for a place to have coffee and finally, we spied a coffee vendor outside a shopping centre just as we were driving out of Tweed Heads. He had great coffee and a selection of roasted nuts for just $2. Yum. As we drove down the motorway sipping on our coffee, police cars kept flashing by with sirens going. We counted seven!! We had planned to bypass Byron but Georgi was keen to have a look and there was a lot of roadworks happening so it seemed like a good idea to have a break. Byron is a wonderful place (geographically) but there are far too many rules - there are dictatorial toilets (they sing and then say you must finish in ten minutes or the door will open!) ... read more

We started today with a trek inland that took us up into the hills while passing through stunning grazing pastures and macadamia plantations. The countryside was lush green in the morning sun and we weaved up through narrow roads that had no sunlight due to the thick canopy of trees overhead. Our first stop of the day was Nimbin in the Northern Rivers area. It has a reputation for being a hippy haven and that proved to be spot on the money. There were weird and wonderful sights along the main street...on one hand you had stoners and buskers that appeared to be transported through time directly from Woodstock and on the other hand there was a police officer walking along complete with a bullet proof vest! Next on the itinerary was Lismore where we stopped ... read more

Two weeks have passed and we are still in the Northern Rivers, what with the heat exchanger coming out of the car, and various other comittments keeping us in traction, we felt like sam wise, having never left farmer maggots corn patch, it seemed we might have a case of shire envy, like a newly freed captive animal not wanting to leave the comfort and security of the cage. But I feel bilbo and basho instinctively knew that such was definitely not the case, however the enormity of the sorrow of the parting. And so like fireflies to the light, we decided to sneak back home to surprise Tarni for her 15th birthday party. The keeperers of the secret, done their job well, as when Tarni got off the school bus, she was truly surprised to ... read more

The first thing we saw when we drove into Ballina was The Big Shrimp. Argh! I refuse to take and post photos of these monstrosities as I simply hate them. Before finishing up my job in Melbourne, a colleague asked whether we would be doing the big things on our trip. I replied yes, thinking she meant the Sydney Opera House and Ayers Rock etc! Apparently there is a whole website dedicated to The Big Things… Ah well, I might come round to it one day, but for now I think it represents the epitome of tackiness. The shrimp aside, Ballina is lovely and quite peaceful. We arrived around lunchtime, so stopped in a park to prepare some food when we saw a couple of tandem parachutists come into land across the road. That was our ... read more

I'm sitting here eating fake Aldi nutella with a spoon while trying to remember what we have done since the last time I posted. This should be easy, but the reality is that I struggle to even remember what day it is much of the time. Yesterday we went to visit Ryan's Uncle and Aunty who have a house south of Ballina at Pimlico. It was our first visit there and both agree that it is in a magic spot. We completely understand why they love living there. After grabbing some lunch we followed them down to the beach (we won't mention how many wrong turns his Uncle took) and took the Triton onto the sand for the first time. It was a lovely afternoon out and after letting Noah have a run around on the ... read more
