GenXNomads

We're the new generation of nomads, not grey (well not completely) but instead of heading overseas to backpack, we've decided to see the sights of this beautiful country that we call home.

Our 'family' includes me, my husband, our 18 month old son and 2 French Bulldogs.

Last year a conversation about moving to Victoria turned into us living in a caravan while we took a spin around the country. So, we sold the house, bought a caravan and away we went in October 2011. This first trip took in parts of south-west Queensland and while Ryan's work changed our travel plans, we were chased home at Christmas time by the threat of being flooded in at Roma.

For our current trip we've ditched the caravan we'd bought and replaced it with a 21' Galaxy Odyssey caravan. It's got more space and just suits us better. We kept the 2011 Mitsubishi Triton and the dogs.

Currently we are moving through coastal New South Wales and plan to head home (back to Queensland) up the middle.

Last night I closed the blog page by accident and lost most of this update, so tonight I’m typing in a word document and I’ll just copy and paste to avoid loosing this and going to bed in annoyance. So, I’m a bad sister and missed my brother’s birthday on Monday. I had remembered his birthday all last week and then forgot on the day until about 10pm. I still haven’t spoken to him… bad sister. Happy Birthday Brendon!!!! We left Ellenborough and travelled to Walcha, with the intention of spending one night so we could get some washing done. One night turned into one week (who can turn down the bargain of $138 / week), which turned into two weeks. Walcha isn’t said how it looks, it is actually pronounced Walca and I have no ... read more

Hmmm... Ellenborough was so long ago (well not really only a week, but it feels like forever) and I can't remember what I wanted to write about our stay. After a day or so of overcast weather, we got some sunny and warm weather. Noah had a great time while we stayed there, stomping around in his gumboots to visit the other people staying in the camp and to investigate everything he could get his nose into. I do think that both Noah and the campers get a lot out of it. Oh, that's right, I was going to mention that my mobile phone fell out of the pocket of my shorts and straight down the long drop toilet. I even held my breath and opened the 'tank' to see if it could be saved, well ... read more

We left Scotts Head... early. Much earlier than I was happy about. The drive was uneventful, which is the only kind of drive you want with over 2.5t following closely behind your car. We stopped for diesel and got some Subway breakfast to fuel us. Note for everyone... a McDonalds breakfast trumps a Subway one in lots of ways and I won't be making the Subway mistake again. Our destination was Ellenborough Reserve (no. 318 in the Camps 6 book) and since it is a bit off the normal highway I imagined it would be quiet with few people there. How wrong was I. It was packed! Luckily a couple of people were moving on and we found a perfect spot to pull up and get setup and ready for the rain. I don't know if ... read more

Oh wow, I have fallen behind on blogging already. Time to try and catch up. There has been a place in the Camps Australia book that Ryan has been mentioning since before we left on this trip. It was a small town about 40kms south of Grafton (about mid-way between Grafton and Coffs Harbour) and there was a camp at the recreation grounds that had no power, but water and we hoped the camping fee would be minimal. So, after driving through some beautiful country we arrived at the Glenreagh recreation grounds... $8 a night unpowered, $12 a night powered. Perfect. We agreed to stay 3 nights. Setting up for us is a bit comical. Picking a site in a free camp where the instruction is... pick whatever spot you want... is complicated, you don't want ... read more

Originally we planned to spend one night in Grafton, but it was a nice place and we decided to stay an extra night. We stayed at the showgrounds.. right in the middle of town, $20 a night and we had power and water. The showgrounds also doubles as the speedway, which is on this Saturday, Ryan seems disappointed that we won't be around for it. The wet weather from Ballina seemed to follow us and it resulted in a nice river of water running through our site... which of course means we bought the dogs into the caravan and spent the late afternoon until Noah went to bed trying to stop him from jumping, climbing and generally harrassing the dogs. Both nights in Grafton they slept in with us, as the ground was soggy and the ... read more

I'm sitting here eating fake Aldi nutella with a spoon while trying to remember what we have done since the last time I posted. This should be easy, but the reality is that I struggle to even remember what day it is much of the time. Yesterday we went to visit Ryan's Uncle and Aunty who have a house south of Ballina at Pimlico. It was our first visit there and both agree that it is in a magic spot. We completely understand why they love living there. After grabbing some lunch we followed them down to the beach (we won't mention how many wrong turns his Uncle took) and took the Triton onto the sand for the first time. It was a lovely afternoon out and after letting Noah have a run around on the ... read more

I forgot my joggers. They are sitting at the front door of the house. That's a really stupid thing for someone attempting to rediscover waistline to do. My solution is to walk in my hiking boots, not only are they heavier, they make me look like I have cankles :( Guess that's punishment for forgetting my joggers. Tonight I'm sitting at Ryan's computer typing, in a vain attempt to stop Noah from crying as he falls asleep... they are probably the wrong words as they make it sound like NOah is drifting off into a peaceful dreamland. In reality he is fighting every step and cries if I leave the room... yay me. We have had a couple of fun days though. Yesterday we went for a proper swim in the pool and had our first ... read more

People talk about getting efficient at setting up & packing up their caravans, I am left wondering if we will ever get that way when it comes to leaving on the start of a trip. There just seemed to be a never ending stream of stuff (aka crap) moving from the house to the caravan... it took forever to pack it all & we're very lucky that we were able to arrange an upgrade on our ATM (how much stuff we can add to the caravan) or we'd be doing this trip naked. Oh, did I mention we have a new caravan? We now call a 21 ft Galaxy caravan home. It is a much better setup for us and it is so nice not having to fold out beds & pop up the top when ... read more
