So, I am about to head out from Charleston to Atlanta to catch a 26 hour flight (with three (3) connections) to Punta Arenas. Christmas in Charleston is always a wonderful time - but time to enjoy the rest of the world.... read more

Flew to Houston to meet up with Jan and Charles and to spend Christmas with them and their family....all 43 of them. As you can see by the photos Jan has quite the christmas spirit in and around her home and what a tree!!! Look at all the presents and all so beautifully wrapped.... except for one. We had been out shopping earlier in the day and Charles was told that he had 2 presents that he had to buy, which was fine. While Jan and Charles went in one direction Ian Robert and I went in another until we bumped into each other and the boys had to stop for a chat and that was the end of their shopping... Jan and I browsed while Robert Ian and Charles became our base station to return ... read more

The bar-fenced Texas ranches of sharp defoliated bushes along I-10 enclose lethargic cattle grazing on dry vegetation. Little changes on the horizon to keep the mind occupied on any highway in East Texas. The broad plots of land are replaced first by oboe-like towers of petroleum refineries in the Houston area. On the far side of the Sabine River, swamps and canals welcome motorists far more appropriately than even the signpost that reads Bienvenue en Louisiane. Vermilion Parish lacks color and is flat, dry, and shapeless in late December. The heat is unimaginable in the summer, they say. With the exception of piles of sand and construction stones outside a construction firm, the nearest natural hill is over one hundred miles away. My father told me the highway through Louisiana was uneventful; I was glad to ... read more

First Time Riding the NY Subway! As early as 6:30am, my cousin, Sheila and I headed out of Midtown Manhattan for a day at Liberty Island and Ellis Island. We took the subway and ofcourse, I was excited to finally see for myself what people say is a confusing labyrinth of tunnels under Manhattan. We took the MTA New York City Subway, which Sheila looked up online last night. (She has moved to San Francisco that's why she needs a little refresher.) Trains were coded A, B, C or 1, 2, 3. And looking at the map online last night, I realize how much simpler my commuting life is in Chicago. First thing I noticed was a poster on the walls of the subway that said "Coat Drive". I noticed it because of an image of ... read more

This journal is a compilation of our experiences as we traveled through the beautiful states of Arizona and New Mexico. I haven't been to Europe yet, but have been told that Europe's far more beautiful than US. Could be, 'coz after having been to numerous places in the US and having seen all that has been made by man, sure Europe may be better . But it's hard for me to digest that anything could be more wonderful than what we've seen of nature in the untouched lands of Arizona. Euro-trip's next on our list, and I certainly hope I am proved wrong. This week long trip was easily one of the most exciting things we've done. And for first time road trippers we didn't do too badly, covering all that we had planned to. Had ... read more

I am realizing a dream. We've made it to Moab and Sam and I have spent the last two days riding-Amasa Back and Slickrock. We camped there last night and will be spending Christmas eve and Christmas .We've loaded up on firewood, and will be barbequing steaks tonight for Christmas eve and will be making a mini turkey tomorrow-a far cry from our regular routine. The roadtrip so far has been a blast. The kids are real roadtrip material and so far no blood. We set off from Vernon on Monday, travelled 2 solid days through intermittent snowstorms. Stayed in Soap Lake Washington the first night, checked out Granger and hung out with the dinosaurs, and the absolute highlight was parking across from the Wal Mart in Salt Lake city in a Snowstorm-"the most snow that ... read more

Merry Christmas to my loyal followers. Dave and I are back in the good old USA for the holidays. We been running ourselves ragged visiting some friends and family and liquidating assets. We plan to keep sailing for a few more years. I've been paying over $2500/year in storage which is ridiculous and If I keep it in there a few more years, I could just buy all new stuff! From the minute I got to my parents house up in Sonoma, I had posted furniture and other high dollar items on craigslist. I can't tell you how awesome that site is. I also had to have a garage sale. Not much fun but very successful. In fact we were so busy first thing in the morning that a few things got stolen. We couldn't possibly ... read more

In preparation for tomorrow's feast, and because I'm a terrible cook, I made a batch of stuffing today as a trial run. It wasn't too bad, the texture and consistency were OK, but I must have added too much salt, as it made me want to vomit as soon as I put it in my mouth. Good job I did the trial run. Dan didn't have to work, so we spent the morning and afternoon buying last minute bits and wrapping presents, before heading over to Chris' place where we were spending the night. I had my festive Christmas tree shaped hat on, which made me feel happy if no one else, and we set to work preparing some of the food for the next day. At around this point, I got a phone call from ... read more
