We had a mammoth journey from Wallowa to South Oregon in terms of distance and environment. We travelled our most miles today 208 retracing our route through Baker City John Day heading south to Burns where we camped one night in a really crappy RV park. The next morning we left after Keith flooding the laundry room 😳. He plugged an top loader washer that was unplugged to return 30 minutes later to find it had leaked all over the room. He unplugged it again, mopped the floor and left. The next morning we had a run in with the woman camp host. We had no refuse drain on our pitch. She told Keith it was in the ground, which we knew it would be but it wasn't. She came over booted ever rock on the ... read more

Niobrara State Park is a public recreation area located at the confluence of the Missouri and Niobrara rivers in the northeast corner of Nebraska. The state park occupies river bluffs to the west of the Niobrara River. The Park offers 120 acres of free-range horseback riding as opposed to designated trails. Twenty cabins sit high on the bluffs overlooking the beautiful Missouri River Valley. Although there were over 100 campsites, we were the solitary campers during most of the week. We enjoyed hiking the trails at the park, some good cardio as it was hilly. Many overlooks with views of the Niobrara & Missouri Rivers. One day we even took a bike ride. Glad we had electric bikes to help us up the hills! We enjoyed a picnic lunch at one of the overlook areas. Would ... read more

We spent the weekend in Little Switzerland otherwise known as Wallowa mountains. Hells Canyon scenic byway holds lots of secrets. More than 19 of the Wallowas peaks rise above 9000 feet many forming the back pack and horseback paradise on Eagle Cap Wilderness. It also has the deepest Canyon in the US, yes deeper than the grand canyon. We left Wallowa rv park and headed for Joseph about 30 miles away. We booked into 5 peaks RV park on the recommendation of the tourist information Centre in Enterprise who told us Joseph was going to be busy with the Alpenfest this weekend. It certainly was. We continued on the Hells canyon scenic byway into Joseph and Wallowa Lake situated a mile from where we're staying. This place has the right to be called Little Switzerland its ... read more

Utah, Colorado and Kansas. We have been racing along I-70. I have convinced John (I think) that we do have enough time to make our destination on time. Therefore, we can slow down, check out roadside attractions, look for postcards (good ones are hard to find), listen to local radio stations and just enjoy the journey.... read more

We love county park campgrounds, and this did not disappoint us! Talcot Park offers the natural beauty and comfort of trees along with scenic views of Lake Talcot. Our campsite backed right up to the edge of the lake. Unfortunately, we only stayed one night.... read more
Campsites were generous size with picnic table and a lovely lake view.
Campsite, while there were many RVs, it was quiet as most are longterm campers and gone for the night.

We continued our journey east from John Day to Wallowa mountains known as Little Switzerland 160 miles away. From John Day to Baker City 80 miles then La Grande 44 miles heading to Wallowa 36 miles. We set off at 10.00 arrived 4pm with a stop at Baker City for lunch. There is lots of history along this route connected with the great gold rush, the timber industry and the immigrants that helped shape this areas history. At John Day we visited Kam Wah Chung state museum and amazing historic time capsule capturing the lives of the Chinese community and their input into the gold rush. Two Chinese men unrelated became the main stays of the Chinese community. One was a Chinese doctor practising Chinese medicine the other an entrepreneur. Together they set up a community ... read more

For a completely unplanned drive, we are doing amazingly well! (Except for the Toby jug grrr!) Just finished watching the Bournemouth vs Arsenal match at The Coffee Shop in Price, UT. The barista there is amazing, she made us feel very welcome and let us just sit, charge and watch football. We have both drunk a lot of coffee so we are off to Nine Mile Canyon to look at some petroglyphs!... read more

We continued along US 26 or Journey through time scenic byway. The marks of time are stamped across this landscape through prehistoric fossil beds, mining boomtowns and surprising sights like the Painted Hills. 55 million years of life are preserved in the rocks in this region, which is why its been given National Monument status. Enroute we stopped at the stunningly beautiful Painted Hills. The geological features are the random deposits of fossilised forests from millions of years ago giving rise to ochre, bronze and black colours over the hills, making them look as if Painted. We continued from Mitchell a small but full of character town. We stopped for lunch at its one pub where it threatened to punch us in the face if we didn't buy its beer πŸ˜„. We didn't and they didn't ... read more

We're playing catch up here. We are busy travelling or just having fun during the day to blog, sorry, and our night stops are in the middle of nowhere with no signal. Where have we been? All the fun outdoor places of course. If there's a hill we'll climb it of there's a trail we'll walk it. Oregon is an adults playground. We left Bend after a saunter along the Deschutes river walk, and a visit to Pilot Butte, 380 feet volcanic cone down town 1 mile hike up and down with 360 views across the Cascade mountains. Bend is very progressive, kinda hipster place with lots of micro breweries and independent coffee shops. Apparently its full of Californians who live here and work remotely. It is beautiful. Bend was originally a timber milling town with ... read more

Bill, friend Kate and I resumed our journey across the USA on the original transcontinental highway in the heat of August. I was excited to return to Omaha where I spent most of my high school years. We planned a full day to finish up the last section of the Lincoln Highway in Iowa, then revisiting my old haunts and Omaha home. It was a nice icebreaker to remind us of the challenges of the road ahead as we traversed farm roads along the Loess Hills of Iowa. Omaha has emerged as a vibrant city – lots of development. I used to take quiet hikes in Fontenelle Forest with my parents – it’s now an admission-based attraction and even offers ziplining, ropes and bridges high above the forest floor. My personal highlight, after stopping by Mercy ... read more
