We have made it to Quartzsite, AZ, where we’ll be staying for a month before moving on to Yuma for the Winter. For now, though, we’ll write about our stop in Oklahoma City, where we spent a couple of years courtesy of Boeing, 43 years ago. This is when we met Rinda and Richard, the boys learned to ride their new bicycles, and Natalie was the Popcorn Lady every Friday morning at their school. It was truly a pleasant experience to drive by the old neighborhood, wonder where all the neighbors have scattered and see how the neighborhood has aged. Some was rebuilt after a tornado took out blocks of homes that were near us before, but you really couldn’t tell the old from the rebuilt. And Oklahoma is one of the prime candidates for us ... read more

We have recently returned from an amazing trip to Oahu and Big Island We booked our flights with British Airways from Manchester via Heathrow and Seattle. The aircraft was very comfortable in economy with ample leg room for the long journey and the staff were very attentive and pleasant, however on arrival at Seattle our cases hadn't travelled with us! Our connecting Airline, Alaskan Airways were brilliant. We completed the appropriate paperwork and completed our journey to Oahu. Our final destination was The Luana suites and Apartments. A very Comfortable room with a kitchenette as we knew Hawaii was expensive!... read more

Day one. Oahu sunrise Thanks to our Jet lag we were awake before birds and had booked a Sunrise cruise with Viator, and had booked a taxi with Charlie's Taxi app. The taxi was always on time and reasonable compared to other companies. Our cruise had been cancelled due to lack of customers but we were rebooked on the Sunset cruise the same day. We decided to take a gentle amble along the beach taking in all the sights Honolulu had to offer. The locals were already taking the surf, playing Beach volleyball and jogging! The sun appeared over the Diamond Point crater North of the city. Breakfast was taken at a little restaurant behind the Hilton called Gangnam Style and was showing the video as we took our seats. Don't think we wowed the locals ... read more

The Sunset cruise was amazing. We booked with Viator and the checkin was slick. Our wristband denoted our main course choice for our 3 course meal. The meal included a salad starter, we had a fish main and cheese cake dessert all very tasty. All soft drinks on board but you can take your own alcohol. The sunrise was special! ... read more

Named after a mythical bird in a famous poem, the new NFL team in Baltimore became the Ravens "evermore" team on Friday, March 29, 1996. "In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore; Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he; ...Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore." --Edgar Allan Poe, 1845 The naming process for the expansion Baltimore NFL team began in mid-February, as soon as owner and president Art Modell received permission from the league office to move his franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore. One of his first actions was to approach the Indianapolis organization about their mascot "Colts," but Indy team officials refused to part with the name. After extensive research, exhaustive panel discussions, focus groups, and fan polling, the name Ravens continued t... read more

Along with the rich history and landmarks of Annapolis, there is no shortage of historic pubs. It is, after all, a University town with the Naval Academy, and St. John's College nearby. I have enjoyed my previous visits here, mostly thanks to Dirty Pat and Mrs. Pat. This trip should be no different. First stop is Galway Bay Irish Restaurant, though I only know the bar. It helps that the spunky, blonde bartender helps (tries to) keep Dirty Pat in line (as best anyone can). But it is a friendly bunch of locals who frequent the place, making us feel quite welcome. It is my favorite, after the oyster bars in town. The building was built in 1897. img=https://assets.simpleviewinc.com/simpleview/image/upload/c_fill,h_443,q_75,w_665/v1/clients/annapolis/Galway_768x512_5534013b-02a9-476a-b50f-4df4a26c240b.jpg The next several stops are optional: The Drummer's Lot, tucked away... read more

This road-trip has changed me. I hope that I can remember and hold onto this desire to make this world a better place. I have seen amazing landscapes, houses, yachts, highways and bridges. There is so much wealth in this country, yet there are people living in abject poverty. Absolute squalor on a par with third world conditions. I know what an urban food desert is now. I have spoken to people that feed children in their community out of their own pockets during school breaks because the kids won’t eat otherwise. To combat the anger, desperation and fear too many turn to drugs and alcohol. Domestic violence, street fights with and without weapons. I am so grateful for what I have. So, I have a plan. I am going to volunteer with my local elks ... read more

There is more to Annapolis I would like to share. First, the population is only about 41,000. Second, Annapolis is home to the United States Naval Academy, founded in 1845. It is also the home of St. John's College, founded in 1696 as King William's School (the third oldest institution of higher learning in the US). From the city's website: Walk along the old brick sidewalks much as George Washington or Thomas Jefferson did in the days when Annapolis was the Capital of the United States. And amazingly, if you squint your eyes, you will see a city which looks remarkably similar to what our Founding Fathers saw in their day. Architecturally, Annapolis boasts some of the finest 17th and 18th Century buildings in the country - including the residences of all four Maryland signers of ... read more

Instead of going to Europe this fall, I decided to stay closer to home. I am headed to Annapolis, and another visit with Dirty Pat (and Mrs. Pat). We are going to a Baltimore Ravens game since they play the hated Seahawks. We are going to sit in his 50-yard line seats and harass the Seahens coach, Petey Boy Carroll. And let me tell you, based on past experience, Dirty Pat can sling the bull! But I will also look forward to other parts of the trip, like the oysters, the great Chinese food down the street, and some good times in the historic Annapolis downtown scene. From 2022: Every time I visit Dirty Pat (and Mrs. Pat), I try to get my fair share of seafood, particularly east coast oysters. On my last trip, I ... read more

For me, I would say the biggest change is using Uber instead of cabs and buses. I still prefer public transportation whenever it is efficient, timely, and convenient. I love using the metros/subways in places like NYC, DC, Chicago, Paris, Athens, Munich, Seattle, SF Bay Area, London. I also value time over money, in most cases. Why spend half a day or more to get somewhere, when an easy one-hour flight will work, for a reasonable price. I still enjoy the train, especially in Japan and Europe. Tour guides are valuable resources when hitting a new city. They seem to know enough inside information to help me get to the "next level" of enjoyment, food, and culture. Apartments and Air BnB allow for more room, washers and dryers, even decent kitchens for some easy meals. But ... read more
