There is more to Annapolis I would like to share. First, the population is only about 41,000. Second, Annapolis is home to the United States Naval Academy, founded in 1845. It is also the home of St. John's College, founded in 1696 as King William's School (the third oldest institution of higher learning in the US). From the city's website: Walk along the old brick sidewalks much as George Washington or Thomas Jefferson did in the days when Annapolis was the Capital of the United States. And amazingly, if you squint your eyes, you will see a city which looks remarkably similar to what our Founding Fathers saw in their day. Architecturally, Annapolis boasts some of the finest 17th and 18th Century buildings in the country - including the residences of all four Maryland signers of ... read more

Instead of going to Europe this fall, I decided to stay closer to home. I am headed to Annapolis, and another visit with Dirty Pat (and Mrs. Pat). We are going to a Baltimore Ravens game since they play the hated Seahawks. We are going to sit in his 50-yard line seats and harass the Seahens coach, Petey Boy Carroll. And let me tell you, based on past experience, Dirty Pat can sling the bull! But I will also look forward to other parts of the trip, like the oysters, the great Chinese food down the street, and some good times in the historic Annapolis downtown scene. From 2022: Every time I visit Dirty Pat (and Mrs. Pat), I try to get my fair share of seafood, particularly east coast oysters. On my last trip, I ... read more

For me, I would say the biggest change is using Uber instead of cabs and buses. I still prefer public transportation whenever it is efficient, timely, and convenient. I love using the metros/subways in places like NYC, DC, Chicago, Paris, Athens, Munich, Seattle, SF Bay Area, London. I also value time over money, in most cases. Why spend half a day or more to get somewhere, when an easy one-hour flight will work, for a reasonable price. I still enjoy the train, especially in Japan and Europe. Tour guides are valuable resources when hitting a new city. They seem to know enough inside information to help me get to the "next level" of enjoyment, food, and culture. Apartments and Air BnB allow for more room, washers and dryers, even decent kitchens for some easy meals. But ... read more

When was the last time, you did something for the first time? It was going to be my first time sky jumping - which is when you jump off a building, but don’t free fall under gravity. You do come down, in a controlled fashion, reaching a top speed of 40mph. Having done similar stuff in the past, I was still looking forward to it. The day started early. My wife and I had breakfast at the hotel. Before sky jumping, there was another bit of adventure that we wanted to do - hand feeding some lions. We made our way to the Lion Habitat Ranch at a place called Henderson, which is a few miles south of Las Vegas. We were greeted by an ostrich and an emu upon entering the premises. There were birds ... read more

Day 4 – Rawlins to Green River. So Bill had to do it. Kate and I were willing to lighten up on all the offroading but even after desperately seeking and finding a rest room at Rock Springs (great old Western town), we were getting dangerously close to sunset as we got close to Green River. We made the grand entrance to Green River via the old road (with I-80 tantalizingly close to the south) at about 8-10 miles per hour. It was a beautiful but teeth jangling descent into Green River, a bustling mining burg. We came in to town via the cemetery, kinda spooky! Amazingly we were the last people to check in at the Hampton Inn which was full of mining contractors. This was our favorite Hampton Inn – the staff was friendly ... read more

Bill, friend Kate and I had to do a little bit of backtracking in order to pick up the Lincoln Highway from Big Springs, Nebraska to Salt Lake City. Here was the location of the notorious battle of the signs pointing early Highway travelers to proceed south to Denver or due west to Wyoming. This required us to fly in to Denver, drive 2.5 hours via interstate to pick up the Big Springs to Cheyenne leg. Our previous trip brought us via the earliest 1913 southern alignment to Denver and points north to Fort Collins, where knowledge of the early road peters out. This is much easier to visualize by taking a look at the Lincoln Highway map https://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/map/ Day 1 Big Springs to Cheyenne: Suffice it to say it was a long day. I'm always on the lookout for local historical sites. While driving in western Fairfax County, I spotted one I had not visited previously, the Frying Pan Meeting House. The former Baptist church dates to 1791. People have asked me about the term "meeting house." In colonial Virginia, the Church of England was the established church. Only it could have "churches". Eventually, Dissenters, as they were known in those days, were permitted to hold worship services, but not in churches. So, Baptists, Presbyterians, and Quakers met for their worship in "meeting houses." The term remained popular among many congregations after American Independence. Frying Pan Meeting House was built by a Baptist congregation between 1786 and 1791. Elder Richard Major organized a Baptist congregation at nearby Bull Run in 1775. They petitioned prominent Virginia landowner Robert Carter III, ... read more

We are obviously home now. The jet lag from Hawaii is real and it’s a bit tough. I am going to try to retrace a few steps but basically… we woke-up Friday, I felt drugged after staying out so late last night at the luau and then staying-up late afterwards with Kamie. I went swimming, finally came back to the room and we packed everything. We had to check-out officially but they have a luggage hold room so we checked our luggage and then walked the resort. We had lunch at this place in the village that offers sliders and fries and potato salad. Kamie left the table to go to the restroom. His sliders and potato salad were sitting there, unaccompanied, and A PIGEON LANDED IN HIS POTATO SALAD AND STARTED EATING ONE OF HIS ... read more

Aloha! We both woke around 4am this morning and sat on our balcony watching the sunrise and it was beautiful. There was a break in the water so it looked like a ship was flying across the ocean. Like an alien ship. Ha I took some pictures and tried to capture the situation. I swear I’m going to post tons of pictures someday soon. I walked to Starbucks to get an iced tea and Kamie decided he wanted breakfast. We had a fantastic breakfast at Bali Restaurant here in the village with a gorgeous ocean view from the back and lagoon view from the side. It was good food and good conversation. Something happened yesterday that cracked me up and I forgot to share it. As we were walking into the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center this ... read more

I just finished reading an interesting novel, and the story involves 3 or 4 different people over several years. The author’s approach, which works for the book, is to tell part of the story from one player’s perspective, then tell another player’s story from a different time, sometimes historical and sometimes current. It works in this story, largely because each segment begins with a heading telling the time. Nevertheless, it sometimes confuses me. Then it occurred that our blog is going similarly, but without the timeline clues of a heading, so I think it best to start each segment off with a paragraph telling where in our trip the segment is meant to describe. So far, we’ve described our journey from Lynden down to Yuma, where we spent last winter, then continued on to most of ... read more
