The US Army and the Sioux/Cheyenne had their last big battle with the Indians trying to preserve their land and way of life. The solders were out numbered big time and Custered made his “Last Stand.” Most of the solders were buried right where they fell. Custer, and many of the officers were later transferred to the cemetery at West Point. There was also a memorial for the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians that was very well done. I had the pleasure of being here on the Friday of Memorial Day. There is the Custer National Cemeter where they have soldiers and Indian Scouts from the 1800’s to today. They even had a Medal of Honor recipient buried here. Being Memorial Day Weekend, they had flags on every gravestone. Very moving to be there and see this. ... read more

Davenport, IA at 4:20 AM on a Sunday is quite calm. We departed with a full moon in view and headed West-towards the rain and wind on I 80. While interstates are not the preferred route they are the fastest. About Iowa City the sprinkles began followed by 30 MPH wind gusts and then the rain. We stayed in rain till Omaha when the North wind changed to an East direction to I 29 to Souix Falls. Weather radar on the GPS can be quite useful. We then took I 90 to Sheridan, WY. Total mileage was 1019 with a elapsed time of 15 hrs and 10 min which computes to 66.8 MPH avg. Wonderful moments of ..YES..road construction. Two years ago they were working on the West bound lane and now the East bound ones, ... read more

Day 9 - Sunday August 26, 2012 After checking out of the hotel, we had breakfast at Bubba's Bar-b-que. They served a good breakfast with reasonable prices. We left Jackson, drove back to Yellowstone. We went out the east entrance of Yellowstone heading toward Cody. We stopped in Cody for lunch then headed on out of town. They have a Buffalo Bill museum there which I have heard is a great museum, however we didn't have time to stop. Mama had already been there several year ago with Daddy. We stopped at the Buffalo Bill Dam just outside of town. It was built in 1910. They had a film about the constructions of the dam in the visitor center. You can walk out over the top of it. It is free but they do accept donations. ... read more

We left Hot Springs just before 8 am and rode to Custer, South Dakota where we stopped for breakfast. Went through Wind Cave National Park again and this time the bison got up close and personnel, they were in the road – we drove about 4 feet away from them, it was amazing A note about tense; I am taking a page out of Jenine’s book and trying to update this journal whenever I get a chance, instead of waiting until the evening. Some entries will probably be in the present tense and others in the past tense, I will attempt to be consistent, but when I am not, I apologize. Speaking of keeping a journal – this netbook I borrowed from Cassidy has been a lifesaver, I use it constantly to book rooms, plan our ... read more

Today was another long day on the bus. I think that's going to be a recurring reality. When you're seeing as many places as we are, it's a lot of travel time. We left the hotel at 8 am and head out of Rapid City for Deadwood, South Dakota. Kevin Costner apparently became enamored of the region around Deadwood whle filiming Dances with Wolves and while he was able to build a casino in the town, apparently the powers that be put the kibosh on his desire to build a resort on a hilltop outside the town. But he was able to go ahead with a cultural center telling "the story of the Buffalo". I've always been a believer that there are three sides to every story, yours, mine and the truth. So after a couple ... read more

Last night we planned our escape from the KOA as we had actually booked and paid for 2 nights but there was no way I was putting myself through that again! Even Howard actually admitted it was NOT fun – I knew the distance to the loo at night would be the clincher!! The stupid thing was it cost the same as staying in a motel so whatever possessed him to decide we would camp I do not know! We had another KOA lined up for a further 2 nights but let’s just say we will not be following through with that! We woke at about 6.30am piled all the stuff back in the car, I went to the loo while Howard did the deed and took the key back, made the excuse, we both jumped ... read more

Drove from the West entrance of Yellowstone through Mammoth Hot Springs (huge elk just roaming around the center of town) and out the North Entrance. Another harrowing drive through the narrow roads with no shoulders. We got in to the cool town of Sheridan and went to Flying Pig Rafting (great people). Our guide, Colin from Indiana, took us on an 8 mile trip down the Yellowstone River. He said the water was real high but not too high - just right. The Hooligans had their own raft and were able to goof around, go swimming, try to balance on the front of the raft. The kids all took a turn "bull riding" - sitting on the bow of the raft as we went through some rapids! It was a blast!! Drove back in to the ... read more

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday dear Candy, Happy Birthday to ME !! I hit a huge milestone in my life today.............when I woke up this morning I was the big 40 !! I have been dreading it for a while now but knew that it was inevitable. It was coming whether I liked it or not. Many of my friends have already experienced turning 40 this year and they have tried their best to convince me to embrace it and enjoy it. Although I know it's just a number and you're only as old as you feel I just can't get past it. I'm gonna try and face today with a big smile on my face and just be thankful that I made it this far. I'm sure in time I ... read more

Much Needed Rest Today we declared a down day. This last week has been constant on-the-go. Also, for the first time, we have significant rain in the forecast - both here in Sheridan and the next two days at Mt. Rushmore where we plan to head from here. So, for today, we decided to stay in Sheridan, Wyoming, watch the Packer game, try to get through some pictures to share while getting some much needed rest. Oh those Packers! We were so hopeful that the Packers would hold out for the win but alas, they just couldn't do it, much to our disappointment and those we watched with. However, we met some wonderful people including Paul and Jane who are avid Packer fans. Donning packer clothes, these folks, along with some others whose daughters live near ... read more
