Warren Bridge Campground, Wyoming to Craig, Colorado
Published: September 11th 2011North America » United States » Wyoming » Rock SpringsSept 09 Warren Bridge campground to Craig, Colorado Today drove down from my campground off Hwy 191 on the Green River to Rock Springs, Wyoming where I got on the internet at MacDonalds and then went to the Golden Corral to eat. The food there is mediocre at best but they do have a salad bar and I try to get a good variety of veggies when I can. I then continued on Hwy 191 south past Flaming Gorge National Park and to Vernal , Utah where I proceeded East on Hwy 40 into Colorado. The rocks you could see at Flaming Gorge were nice but they may as well call it Flameless Gorge as it is underwater having been dammed up for a reservoir. Such a shame but guess people need water. Going East on ... read more
Western Wyoming Community College
Published: July 1st 2011North America » United States » Wyoming » Rock SpringsOn the opposite end of the state from Cheyenne is Rock Springs – another mining community – and home of Western Wyoming Community College. I talked to Carol, Director of Workforce Training. She had to take off early and we could not make it to her campus location at Green River (20 miles from Rock Springs) before they closed for the weekend. Carol was aware of our partnerships with other community colleges in Wyoming and she heard lots of good things. I updated her on our new products and company changes on the phone. She had just hired someone to expand allied health programs and work with the local hospitals and was very interested. I left information packets at the main campus to be sent to her office and will follow up next week. It is ... read more
Good Morning U S and A!
Published: May 28th 2011North America » United States » Wyoming » Rock SpringsIt's been a few days now since last updating our status on the road here so we'll give you a quick insight into our last 96 hours. Yellowstone was a blast, albeit with massive cold nights which saw us totally unprepared for the weather in Dora. Driving into Yellowstone the first day the heavens opened up to us and presented us with blue sky- A relief considering the weather forecast of rain all week, luckily we decided to keep going as we were about to opt for a different route. The park didn't appear to our idea of what it would be like at first, but further driving saw an array of wildlife everywhere. There were baby Bears, Elk, and Bison all coming out from hibernating from winter and we were kind of glad we came ... read more
Flames and Dinosaurs
Published: September 27th 2009North America » United States » Wyoming » Rock SpringsIffy phone service and no internet. I''m technologically-challenged! Sitting in a Superwalmart now and YES!!!!! INTERNET! We are trying to get South before the snow. First stop was Flaming Gorge National Park located both in Wyoming and Utah. We camped on the lake and had a million dollar view. Sandy and Bruce put their kayaks in and saw another view....water so clear they saw the canyon walls beneath them. The antelope are migrating too. We kept some distance as the bucks started dividing up the herd of cows. We continued down switch-back roads with 9-12% grades through canyon walls flaming red. Arrived at Dinosaur National quarry in Colorado. We camped along the Green River. Here I again faced my fear of heights. We climbed on ancient ledges. I touched a dinosaur leg fossil nearly 3 million ... read more
Goodbye Tetons, hello southern Wyoming
Published: September 18th 2009North America » United States » Wyoming » Rock SpringsIn the morning as we were leaving Teton Village, the hang gliders were all out floating above the mountain. Several landed at their designated spot in a field near the parking lot. The weather was sunny with a pretty heavy haze on the horizon. Today we drove further south in Wyoming via a scenic route that lead us into Idaho, down through a small portion of Utah and back into Wyoming again. Route 89 traveled through the Targhee National forest with the snake river running along side the road. The forest rose up very steep slopes each side and the underbrush was deep orange and gold in many places. There were lots of Cottonwoods beginning to turn yellow and clusters of red, orange and gold deciduous trees amongst the green pines. It was gorgeous.!!! Once through ... read more
Day 12 - Drive through Wyoming
Published: May 22nd 2009North America » United States » Wyoming » Rock SpringsAfter yesterday, today was bound to be a little bit of a let down. We contemplated getting up super early to hit the road but instead decided that getting up by 7 and on the road by 9 would be perfect. Luckily, Levi got that memo and was the only one to follow through on the "get up by 7" portion of the plan. He was up and ready to party by 7. We were forced to join the party and start our departure. We got on the road around 9 and started the extremely long and sometimes painful (literally) drive into Southwestern Wyoming. Sarah sat in the back seat for the first 3 hours to help Paul with school work. Levi napped a little while and Todd did a most excellent job of driving. Most ... read more
Onaxthiel Writes: We awoke to another foggy day. We had been hoping that the weather system that we were under would pass over in the night. It really hadn't. A low lying fog enveloped craters of the moon and a combination of mist and snow fell on the road as we headed back into the monument. We drove the scenic loop in the low viability and got out at every “scenic” stop to see what we could, and it was always more fog. The most interesting spot was a foot trail that was three quarters of a mile out to a small volcanic cone. Problem: in the fresh snow and 100 ft. visibility fog, we couldn't figure out where the path was, which direction the cone was, or how we would get back to the car ... read more
Insomniatic Ramblings
Published: October 1st 2005North America » United States » Wyoming » Rock SpringsRock Springs, WY Middle of the Red Desert, Bunny's run rampant here like squirrels Only they don't climb trees and often end up as road kill. Drove past Independence Rock without realizing it "Hey Megan- what's that larger rock over there?" Almost got run off the road several times by truckers going West on 80. Bully Semis. Old mining city surrounded by rolling hills, They look like painted flats, scenic paintings, illusions, Megan described them as a "Navajo Blanket", Stretched out over a sleeping giant, At night the hills disappear, And leave just a dark void Between the city street lamps and the star lit sky. A difficult week as far as the kids go, They all seem to be enjoying rehearsals and the show, But attention and focus is lacking. Mostly due to rehearsals now ... read more
