We left the hotel in Squamish around 9:00 AM and drove to the USA/Canadian border near Lynden, WA. Though different from where we crossed previously, the delay was just about the same. About 40 minutes after arriving at the border, we were able to actually re-enter the US. The planned 5 hour drive took more like six and a half. The drive to Winthrop goes through the North Cascade Mountains along the Cascade Highway and is pretty scenic in its own right. We arrived in Winthrop, a very touristy little town at the confluence of the Chewuch and the Methow Rivers around 3:30 PM and checked into our motel. After getting settled, we walked on a trail that took us over the Methow River on a pedestrian bridge, through the town and crossing a second pedestrian ... read more

Day 2 in Seattle found us in different places. Sue looking for a Museum and me in an Irish bar watching the England Columbia match in the World Cup. A tense affair which unbelievably we won on penalties - footballs coming home. Met up with an old friend and his wife (Dave and Jen) who kindly took us to their home in Ballard before showing us a different part of Seattle and fantastic hospitality. Visited Rays, a lovely restaurant and had a great meal there with wonderful views across the bay. http://www.rays.com/boathouse/ thoroughly recommend it. Later walked along Ballard beach watching all and sundry having fun and playing beach volleyball Next morning 4th July we visited the Ballard salmon locks and managed to see salmon leaping (well sue did) and seals with Dave. Followed up with ... read more

We left Seattle around 1:30 and drove to Glacier, WA, battling the stop and go afternoon traffic that seems inevitable near any large city these days. Arrived at the Blue T Lodge just west of Glacier around 4:30 PM and checked in at the bar in the adjacent Chair 9 pizza restaurant. The bartender had my reservation and, key in hand, we made our way to our room on the second floor. Lodge room was nicely furnished though without TV reception, refrigerator, microwave, or air conditioning, none of which was a necessity, but all were missed at one time or another. The saving grace was a reasonably fast WiFi connection. As it turned out, we were just in time for the 4th of July parade that started at the restaurant and consisted of a couple of ... read more

The day has come and we have left the UK on our 12mnth adventure. The last few weeks have been a blur as we have sorted the house out for rental and finalising our plans Day one went as smoothly as it could with Shalagh dropping us off at Gatwick at 0700 UK time. We flew Norwegian Air and I would thoroughly recommend their service. A mere 15 hours after starting out we had dumped our bags at the hotel and were heading off into downtown Seattle. Pike place market was interesting and we will head back another day. Nearby we found the 'famous' gum wall a strange but interesting place where the locals (or possibly tourists) leave this gum. Yum. An old friend recommended we look at Seattle from the water so we jumped on ... read more

Early this May I went to a Dive Expo in Seattle…like a Boat Show, but for divers. And I got a lot of follow up advertisement for Live Aboard trips and I fell in love with a boat, La Galigo. A beautiful wooden boat made of iron wood and teak. Interior like Norwegian wood inlay and bright red sails. Wood, and Red Sails. It was a must lust for me. Leaving port in Labuan Bajo in Bali on the ninth of July. I said I Want That! Only thirteen divers. To Komodo Islands. 13. Lucky Thirteen. Well then, where else? Brunei might be interesting. I only passed through the airport once, but I almost missed my connecting flight I was so enchanted by the lovely sales girls and their modest behavior and sweet smiles. On my ... read more

Old town Issaquah is beautiful, historical and artistic. The city is rather small with a population of only 37.5 thousand people and is interestingly divided into two by interstate 90 bisecting the old and new. The old is in a valley, while the new is raised up the valley floor giving one a beautiful view of the Sammamish Plateau. To the south is the mountainous Issaquah Alps, funny that it is called the alps, but you have to see it to know -Oh, and you really have to know what the Swiss Alps look like to make a comparison. Its one of the towns I, intend to tour more of. A few points of interest for those who might want to visit; 1. The Issaquah Depot museum; The city’s train depot was built in 1889, and ... read more

Does having the most coffee shops per square mile mean that you have the best coffee? Yes, there is a Starbucks, and usually one other competitor on every block. There are a few Peet's (our favorite), so there is hope for this city. But do they have really good coffee? Here is an "expert" at the Stranger: Coffee shops in Seattle function as social clubs, community forums, shared office space, and study centers. Even the most utilitarian place offers mind-boggling overheard conversation and fascinating people watching. In my opinion, Starbucks's coffee tastes burned and people look dumb walking around drinking coffee out of giant paper cups like they're constantly at a high-school kegger. Espresso is best sipped scalding hot from a ceramic cup without a weird plastic sippy-cup lid filtering it through a petroleum product. Try ... read more

After 15 years in the Grand Canyon State - Arizona, it was time to move. Now one would have a hard time understanding why I was bitter about leaving the dry arid desert of Arizona for a semi-tropical state of Washington. That is a long story, and I will leave it for another time. The big and small of it, is that my husband got tired of the heat, and trekking in the desert all day, and decided to put in for a job relocation. Seattle is what he got. Like me, prior to moving here, I did not know that Seattle like Phoenix has a large metropolitan area, that covers up to 3 counties. Renton, like many other smaller cities within an hours drive of downtown Seattle are part of metropolitan Seattle. When my husband ... read more

When my husband and I first got married, one of the first trips we took as newlyweds was a short trip to Seattle. My husband had a work trip and I hadn’t started my new position as a technical writer yet, so I was able to tag along. We got to see a sample of the city but the trip wasn’t long enough for us to truly explore all that it had to offer. Still, we fell in love with the city and its water views and we vowed that we’d be back one day. So, when he got the opportunity to travel back to Seattle last autumn, we arranged for our parents to help watch the kids and we took the chance to revisit one of our favorite places. We started where we began the ... read more

" I see my path, but I don't know where it leads. Not knowing where I am going is what inspires me to travel." Rosalio de Castro Routing: HW 97 from Crater Lake to Cove Pallisades State Park OR and then on to Yakima State Park WA. Distance travelled: 699 km. Total Distance to date: 3160 km. The routing now had a definite northerly point in mind. Seattle. But, as with any journey, it is never a straight line and we set off on HW 62 with HW 97 next up to ensure we missed the maelstrom of HW 5, a main, pulsing interstate artery. There are a few simple rules of the road when camper vanning. Try and not do more than 300 km per day and ensure you have a regular stop every hour ... read more
