After 15 years in the Grand Canyon State - Arizona, it was time to move. Now one would have a hard time understanding why I was bitter about leaving the dry arid desert of Arizona for a semi-tropical state of Washington. That is a long story, and I will leave it for another time. The big and small of it, is that my husband got tired of the heat, and trekking in the desert all day, and decided to put in for a job relocation. Seattle is what he got. Like me, prior to moving here, I did not know that Seattle like Phoenix has a large metropolitan area, that covers up to 3 counties. Renton, like many other smaller cities within an hours drive of downtown Seattle are part of metropolitan Seattle. When my husband came home excited telling me that he had got the job in Seattle, my immediate reaction was- why such an expensive state? His answer of course was not what I wanted to hear, seeing as we still had 6 months to go before our daughter would be done with high school. Nevertheless, the decision was final and we had to start working on moving. The
move for me and the kids ended up being 7 months later, to Renton.
Renton is a city of Washington with a population of over 100, 000 residents, and surrounded by forests and mountains and Lake Washington to compliment its green, right at the mouth of Cedar River. It is a little over 11 miles drive from Seattle. It is home to the final assembly point for the Boeing 737 family of commercial airplanes. It is the 8th largest city of Washington and growing bigger. After a long history of being a popular salmon fishing area for Native Americans, Renton was first settled in by people of European descent in the 1860s, and its early economy was based on coal mining, clay production, and timber export. That aside, it is interesting to note that the NFL's Seattle Seahawks team, has a training facility in Renton, and it is the second-largest facility in the NFL at 200,000 square feet (19,000 m). So naturally, I decided to support the State's leading team - Go Seahawks!!!
What is of more interest, is the fact that the city is located at the confluence of three major freeways; Interstate 5 (I-5), Interstate 405
(I-405) and the SR167 all of which do nothing for eliminating the traffic problems facing the residents , so the city's economic development team has lured a number of specialty retailers that draw consumers from around the region, including Frys Electronic, IKEA, and Amazon; however some retail establishments were unwanted, and the city successfully defended zoning restrictions on pornographic theaters.
The Renton Public Library was built directly over the Cedar River and opened in 1966. It stretches 80 feet (24 m) across the river, next to Liberty Park, and was the main branch of the city's independent library system until its 2010 annexation into the King County Library system. It is one of the points of interest for the city, an architectural achievement that won awards after its remodeling.
