Send off and first day of the Summer 2018 cruise north up the Inside Passage. The best part of cruising up the inside Passage is enjoying the incredible scenery all around us. Ama’s “house” has 11 windows, literally providing a 360˙ view, and depending on our location, breathtaking landscapes in every direction. We usually hang out together here, one of us (usually Peter) at the helm, monitoring our route, watching for other boats, crab or shrimp pots buoys and making sure our trusty auto-pilot isn’t steering us of course. The other (usually me) is manning the galley, stowing lines, clearing decks and preparing for anchor or docking. It’s the best place to be on Ama though we each have our favorite spots depending on the time of the day. (+ 360 movie) While I usually don’t ... read more

Art drove me down to Omak to catch a 6am bus to Wenatchee. I spent the day with one of my high school buddies, Mary Joy, who drove me to the airport. I love this place. They took my suitcase and said it would go all the way to Naples. Amazing! History of Pangborn Memorial Airport has been in operation since 1941. It is named for Clyde Pangborn, who along with co-pilot Hugh Herndon, completed the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean in 1931. Their epic journey began in Misawa Japan, and ended 41 hours later in East Wenatchee, Washington. Northwest Airlines began the first commercial air service to and from Pangborn Airport in 1945. In order to cut down on weight they dropped their wheels just after takeoff, literally dropped them off the plane. ... read more

We’ve made it to Seattle after a slightly tortious journey from Banff. First we went to Calgary for a few days to stay with an old school friend of mine who I hadn’t seen in over 30 years. It was good to see him and to meet his wife and teenage son who I’d not met before. Whilst we were in a major city we also sorted out the shipping of our ski gear back to Australia and took the opportunity to buy some much needed clothes that should last us until we reach Europe. On a fine day we walked into central Calgary, which is an OK city but too be honest not desperately interesting for visitors, but I did like the connected walkway concept that links the business towers and shopping areas with each ... read more

I am leaving for Vancouver Island tomorrow (Friday) . I have been sleeping in the car at the boatyard for just over 30 days, met a lot of interesting and nice people and had alot of fun getting the LovleyJoann fixed up and in the water. Mike the owner is back in Alaska visiting with his wife and new son. When he returns in two weeks there is a little more to do then sail the boat up the coast about 750 miles. Would have been fun to go with him but I am running out of time. Slept on a big 66' William Garden design that a guy is completly restoring, what a beautiful boat. It will be going to Alaska next year to take people on charters (lucky people). I hope the next part ... read more

Getting to Seattle My spouse Jeff was selected to judge a springboard and platform diving competition in Federal Way, located south of Seattle, last weekend. I decided to join him for the weekend. I had been prewarned that Seattle was unseasonably cold and that there had been snow, so I was prepared accordingly. I arrived in Seattle on Thursday, February 22. The scenery on approach to Seatac Airport was amazing, with the ground blanketed in white and spectacular snow capped peaks on both sides of the approach path. After arrival, I took a shuttle to the hotel, collected my key from reception (Jeff had already checked in a day earlier) and walked to the nearby strip mall to enjoy a bowl of hot pho. After that, I napped until Jeff got back from judging. That evening, ... read more

I am in port Townsend Washington the wooden boat capitol of the west coast. I have never seen so many beautiful sailboats in my life. I am helping a guy work on his 54' purse seiner from Alaska. You have no idea how much bottom there is to scrape on one of these, days and days and I did all by myself. There is a lot left to do so I plan on being here for a while, I am living in the boat yard. A dream for me. I am also volunteering at the Northwest Maritme Center two days a week. Amazing how much work you can find if you work for free.... read more

There are several answers to this question. One might be that it is more fun. I can walk around, without that damn seatbelt light coming on. And I can see out of BOTH sides of the train. Mealtime is at an actual table with waiters, something even a premium seat in First or Business Class of an airplane cannot match. The quality of the food is somewhere between coach class and first, however. Two, it is much more relaxing. I can nap whenever I want, with nobody to bother me. I can stretch out on two seats, with several pillows and blankets if needed. I can open or close the shades, adjust the airflow and light, and it is much quieter than an airplane. Three, the people I meet on the train seem much more willing ... read more

Early rise puts us out the front of our apartment, into our van and on the road to Washington by 0700. First stop was Delaware, just a quick stop for a pretzel at Cinabon and a quick coffee, extra weak. Another pit stop at Maryland and then into the heart of freedom and the white glare of the Capital. May the odds be in your favour. Straight into the fray with a tour of Capitol Hill. God I love my politics, maybe even as much as Ollie (check the OMG I'm bored pic). Out of the frying pan into the fire in the top seats of the Senate and watching nobody listen to some dude wallow on about some Russian theory involving Trump. Can not get enough! Do I really have to leave. Got out of ... read more

We set off on last Thursday by firstly having a quick visit to the Manassas/Bull Run Battlefield. This was the site of two major Civil War battles, including the first of the war in 1861. For that battle soldiers on both sides, Union and Confederate were basically untrained, unready and had no idea what to expect. In fact the general populous had no idea either and many congressmen and citizens packed picnics and followed the Union army out to the battlefield for what they thought would be a very colourful show, over in double quick time. Wethinks they got a lot more colour than anticipated but it was probably much more crimson than they expected. 900 men died on those fields that day and all notion that the Civil War would be over in days were ... read more
